7.30 Nicotine and Gravy - Beck

Had to go through Beck's catalogue today to remind myself which song I Iove the most. He has so many great ones. I think Midnite Vultures was his best album, and this song captures the essence of Beck's nutty, groovy virtuosity. 

I'll feed you fruit that don't exist... 

I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed... 

I'll do your laundry, massage your soul... 

I'll turn you over to the highway patrol...

Didn't know this until a couple of days ago, but he made a pledge that if Biden won Georgia, he’d put out a record of covers of songs by Georgia artists, which he just released.

Now someone asked if he’d do one for Texas if Beto wins governor there, and he said sure.  Then Steve Albini offered him free studio and engineering for it, and he said sure.  Then OH said he’d do all the cooking for it, and Steve vouched for him, so Isbell said sure.

No matter what your politics are, I ask you to root for Beto in a long-shot here so that we can go cook at Jason Isbell’s recording session.  Kthx.

I have a question as an interested observer/non-participant in this draft. So, now that Drive By Truckers are taken, does that mean Jason Isbell would be off the board too? I haven't spent a lot of time in music draft threads. I apologize if I should have PMed my question to a draft participant and not posted it in the thread.

Matt Barrick was the drummer for that song, right? I'm trying to remember who drummed on what at what time in the band's existence. Perhaps he was always the drummer, but I remember somebody switching instruments at some point. Perhaps my memory is faulty.

Eh, I'll look it up. Ah, it was the bassist and organist that switched roles in the band. Barrick was the drummer all the way through.

Maxwell announced he's got a new album coming out in 2022. It'll be the third in his Black Summers' Night series with some kind of unique capitalization to distinguish it from BLACKsummers'night and blackSUMMERS'night.  He'll be touring behind it as well.

I toiled over his work yesterday too.  He's got to be one of the most difficult artists to pick a "best" considering how different his albums are from each other.  Similar to you, I honed in on what I think is his best album, Odelay, and chose my favorite song, Novacaine.  That conclusion would likely be different today, however.  

Speaking of Midnite Vultures, you just gotta shake your head and laugh at Hollywood Freaks.

What a cool story.  Thanks for sharing. As someone who worked on Kinky Friedman's independent campaign (almost!) against Perry back in 2006 I'm all in against Abbott.

If I didn’t have a draft schtick going I would have taken them a while ago. Love Outfit but could also go with Gravity’s Gone or Carl Perkins Cadillac.

 
7.33 You Oughta Know, Alanis Morrissette

Morrissette's breakout hit was her best.  That's not to say she didn't have other good music; Jagged Little Pill was a monster album, but this was a cut above the rest.  It's still weird to think this song was likely written about Uncle Joey.

Ok, glad I asked. I was going to share a story, but I'll wait now. His name was mentioned and I'm not sure about all the forms of spotlighting.

I'm not a draft participant, but sometimes I feel compelled to share my thoughts about certain artists/picks.

One of the most underrated bands of their era, they somehow only had one commercial hit with No Rain.  All three of their albums have incredible music from top to bottom.  Unfortunately, lead singer Shannon Hoon died of a cocaine overdose in 1995.

Nice pick... also one of my favorites from the era. I would have went with Change as its one of my all time favorites. Galaxy is a great tune as well

I had never heard this song and had no idea it was this popular. It's ranked really high on Rolling Stone's most recent Top 500 list.

My (step) father-in-law is a minister so I've put in time in Black churches over the years. Getting out before kickoff of the late games was my goal.

Great process, great name, great logo.  I need more Kraken gear; it's all very sharp-looking.   The team sold out its season tickets in 12 minutes, and the enthusiasm has not waned yet even though the team is...not good.  They made this feeble Blackhawks team look like the '85 Oilers.  Lots of pent-up demand for hockey here; before this, people would travel to Vancouver for their fix.  I'd say the place was about 30% Blackhawks fans last night, though.  Of course, no one who lives in Seattle is from here.

My stepmother's dad was a minister, and both my dad and stepmom are/were very devout.  They always went to Black churches when they traveled because they enjoyed them the most, so when I was a kid I got a lot of experience in them, too.  At the time I found it fun, actually.

Wow! I didn't even know there were any other Tim Buckley fans on this thread or in this forum.

Unfortunately, if Tim Buckley's name is familiar to people at all, it is either for being Jeff Buckley's father or for This Mortal Coil's cover of his tune, Song To The Siren.

If the so-called Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducted people on talent alone, Tim Buckley should have been among the first inductees. Arguably the best RnR singer ever, with a 4 1/2 octave range and reportedly was electrifying to see live (I never got the opportunity, as I wasn't introduced to him until the late 80s, some years after his passing).

But it wasn't just that his voice was great from a technical standpoint, he put out some top flight music in variety of styles, ranging from 60s folk to 70s dance funk to a free form avant-garde style jazz rock in the LP Starsailor (which is just incredible to listen to). 

As I mentioned after Jeff Buckley's pick, Tim was planning to do a live LP before his death which I think would have done the same for him, popularity wise, as Frampton Comes Alive did for Peter Frampton. Sadly, we will never know if that would have been his commercial breakthrough or yet another LP that the critics liked, but was not well received by the public.

So this is the other band that formed from the ashes of Operation Ivy, albeit much later than Rancid.  And, like Operation Ivy,  it didn't last long. Pretty sure Jesse Michael's has a bad case of ADHD. I could have picked multiple songs off of their 2 albums...but I always come back to:

Bob Seger – You'll Accompany Me

Big fan, seen him live twice.  Most recently at The Forum about 4 years ago and he sounded great.  But I want it to be known I really despise “Old Time Rock n Roll”…it just sucks and he has a few others hits that are unlistenable for me.  That being said, way too many great songs to let him slide in the draft.  I'm told he was played to death in the 70s and there is a lot of Seger burnout, but I didn't discover most of his 70s stuff until the 90s when he wasn't really played...so the burnout thing doesn't really apply to me.
