THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (1 Viewer)

Bob Seger – You'll Accompany Me

Big fan, seen him live twice.  Most recently at The Forum about 4 years ago and he sounded great.  But I want it to be known I really despise “Old Time Rock n Roll”…it just sucks and he has a few others hits that are unlistenable for me.  That being said, way too many great songs to let him slide in the draft.  I'm told he was played to death in the 70s and there is a lot of Seger burnout, but I didn't discover most of his 70s stuff until the 90s when he wasn't really played...so the burnout thing doesn't really apply to me.

My Seger Top 5

1.       You’ll Accompany Me

2.       Night Moves

3.       Against the Wind

4.       Shame on the Moon (Hot Take Selection)

5.       Still the Same

*Bonus Track - Turn the Page
Turn the Page(live version only) , 2+2=? , and fire down below are my favs

I'll sing every word whenever Turn the Page comes on the shuffle when driving with the kids. They'll ask questions. I'll ignore them and keep singing along. They ruined the experience one time because they just started screaming, but we compromised and now they're allowed to try to get me to crack but only with normal dialogue. I'm currently undefeated.

 love it.

Round 8.22

Kanye West - Famous

I'm limiting it to only the previous decade with Kanye, and this is arguably his best song off of Donda, ye, The Life Of Pablo, or Yeezus.

The breakdown with Sister Nancy's "Bam Bam" is a perfect break. Production by Swizz Beatz.

Procol Harum - Conquistador (1967)

As I think back at the songs that really hit me, even as a little kid (my theme) - this is one of the big ones.

Certainly "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is better known and I love it too, "Conquistador" captures that time so well, but still holds up today.

I cringe every time I hear Gary Brooker's pronunciation of Conquistador 😒 Yeah, I get this was a UK band, but still...

My favorite was the Robin Trower rocker Whiskey Train.

Holy Cowbell Batman! If there is Cowbell Hall Of Fame, that song has got to be in it (RIP B.J. Wilson)

8.24 - Brittany Howard - Stay High

Howard's debut solo album Jaime slipped past me when it came out in 2019.  I had never really bonded with Alabama Shakes so I didn't seek it out and the algorithm didn't put it in front of me.

She put out a different version of her LP earlier this year and the reimagined version of the song with Childish Gambino caught my ear on the radio and sent me back to the original album. "Stay High" is definitely the pick to click from the record. It's a delicious summery groove with a short, sweet and soulful refrain.

8.27 Cocteau Twins - Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires

Hard to pick a standout on Heaven or Las Vegas. This one in a photo finish with a half dozen others. What a great album. It'd slipped between the cracks for me until this draft.

Yeah, there are a lot of good Cocteau Twins songs, but off that LP I would go with Fifty-Fifty Clown, which I thought that if they were ever to have a pop hit, it would be have been that song - danceable with a good pop hook and Liz's vocals are somewhat understandable. Alas, it wasn't released on single.

Another "I can't believe they are still on the board" pick.

Round 8:

Everyday People -- Sly and the Family Stone

Here's what I wrote about it in my 1969 countdown:

This song topped the R&B and Hot 100 charts in Feb/March '69 (the first Sly song to achieve the latter), was named by Billboard as the #5 song of 1969, was ranked #145 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest songs of all time, and is one of the most memorable '60s hits by anyone. It was released as a single in late '68 but appeared on the Stand! album released in May '69, so it meets my inclusion criteria (and probably didn't meet Tim's due to the '68 angle).

The song has remained in popular consciousness ever since its release because of its message of racial harmony and its infectious melody and rhythm. It coined the phrase "diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks," which became so commonly used that it inspired the name of a sitcom launched a few years later.

Larry Graham used the slap bass technique on this song and has claimed it was the first use of it anywhere. The rest of the arrangement is bright and sunny, reflecting the hope of the lyrics.

"We got to live together" is a sentiment that means more than ever today.
@Raging weasel is up

@Northern Voicecan pick whenever

Spotify pumps me with her work, thankfully. But I've never seen the video- and I love it. Love it. Was that Terry Crews?

ok man, sure love you here and we've never met ...

but I figured these guys were only at risk of @Uruk-Hai ...sooooooo this requires a tremendous amount of strategy rework as well as several "recovery" drinks

devastating pick my friend

reaction.

Round 8

Wiser Time - The Black Crowes

There's other songs that would better show their Stones' influence (Remedy, for one), but this is the "best of" draft and this is their best song. Black Moon Creeping comes in second.

@Chaos Commish
Those are my #1 and #2 Crowes as well. I was thinking today that I should probably consider Wiser Time a backup plan in case the artists I wanted first were gone for my round 8/9 picks.

8.X Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism

Their most beautiful song on their most beautiful album.
I fired this record up and made it thru like one and half songs.  I'm willing to give em another go, maybe when I'm in a different mood, but I was nodding off I swear.

Noticed your first 2 choices. Rusty Cage and Rear View Mirror. Reminded me of a younger me. And younger me would not have been into Death Cab.

Btw, hat tip on picking the best title in the Pearl Jam catalog

I like more mellow stuff too, but I'm picky.   Also, good music is good music.  I still listen to the stuff now, that listened to when I was much younger.  I mean I've weeded out a few things, but if it stands the test of time, whether heavy, or not, I'm still into it.

I dunno deathcab just didn't speak to me.  Not that what I heard was horrible music, it was just didn't move the needle for me......I'll give em another shot

Time for a favorite. Yo Mama selects:

8.32 - Beastie Boys - Shake Your Rump

Yeah there might be a few “better” songs by them, but this is my jam.

I’m like Sam the Butcher bringing’ Alice the meat . . . One of the greatest lines in music history.
