THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

19.15 Gladys Knight & The Pips - "I've Got To Use My Imagination"

Knight was one of the best singers of the 70s and she worked with some of the best songwriters, musicians, and producers around. I went with the (relatively) less chalky pick, just because I wanted to and it kicks ###.

Round 19:

Fencewalk — Mandrill

Like Santana, they were a dynamic multiracial group whose sound covered many genres. Unlike Santana, they were marketed as R&B and didn’t have an instrumental star like Carlos, so they were never as popular among rock/pop fans. Fencewalk was their biggest hit and is probably the song most representative of their strengths.

19.X Billy JoelPiano Man

Always been a fan of his.  Everybody knows the songs, many know the lyrics.  I bet we'd get 10 different answers to his "best" just among us.  I went chalk here, as this song is somewhat of a cultural phenomenon and certainly iconic.   Can't believe I haven't seen him live.

My top 5 Favorite Billy Joel (not best)

1.  Anthony's Song (movin out)

2.  Allentown

3.  A Matter of Trust (Hot Take Selection)

4.  Captain Jack

5.  The Entertainer

For Binky:

The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee

"Most of my pics have been rockers, but I could not leave a top 20 "60s favs" list without this song.  Beautiful, haunting, emotional.

It was the summer I was 8, and I first heard through the big speaker that was in the center of our local putt-putt.  Every Tuesday was $1 Day from 11am - 6pm ...play all day.  I had enough for a hot dog and a coke and played the entire 7 hours ...every week.  The local top top 40s AM station played the hell out of it.

...good times"

It still amazes that the guy in The Left Bank who wrote this was only 16 years old.

I prefer to listen to the Four Tops cover of this, which I think is the definitive version

This song has been covered over a dozen times and one that amused me was by a Scottish band (can't remember the name) that changed the lyrics from "the lot we passed by everyday" to "the loch we passed by" 😃

19.30  Silkworm - Couldn't You Wait

Sentimental pick here in my "Premature Tragic Deaths" mix.  As some of you know from a prior thread, OH is/was close friends with these guys, and the "was" part of "is/was" is due to the death of their drummer Michael Dahlquist in 2005.  He died when a suicidal woman decided to plow her car into another one in order to end her life, but tragically she lived while the three occupants of the other car - simply sitting at a stoplight on their way to lunch - all died.  She served three years.  No further comment on that.

When I decided to choose a Silkworm song, OH reached out to two of his closest friends - one of the other members of the band, Tim Midyett, and Steve Albini, who produced most of their records - and said, "If you were going to introduce someone to Michael Dahlquist's drumming, which song would you choose?"  Of course, that led to a lengthy discussion of a ton of songs, but I decided on the one above as probably the overall "best."

Steve described this one as follows:  "The drumming on this is such a lesson.  Never sounds unkempt but every measure is subtly different from its neighbors.  Totally rewards repeated listens the way 'timekeeping' rarely does.  Just fantastic."

Tim said:  "Best hard rock drummer of his generation I think, and he did not have the good fortune to be in a hard rock band."

In addition to the one above, they suggested (among others) I Hope You Don't Survive "for muscle Mikey," Dust My Broom "for young punk Mikey," Nerves "for max feel Mikey," and Don't Look Back for "the perfect realization of a hard rock version of motorik."

@Ilov80s, please let us know things are ok where you are.
Fine, thanks for asking. The HS was about an hour from where I work though so pretty close to home if you will. Terribly sad. I am curious to know why it happened but beyond that I just don’t have the mental/emotional energy to read much about it. I’ve got so many kids at my school with really awful mental health issues right now so I’m just focusing my energy there.

Understandable.  I haven't read anything about it but merely saw "school shooting" and "near Detroit" and immediately thought of you.

I know @Raging weasel doesn't work in a school, but I should have thought to check in with him too, since he's in the area.  Hope all is well, RW.

I don’t believe this is anywhere near where he would normally be.

Actually I do work in a school. I work at a law school in downtown Detroit so nowhere near me either but thanks for thinking of me :)

No brain power for much thought on my next pick today, so I’m going with a no-brainer. Yo Mama selects:

19.YM - Fugees - Ready or Not

Almost went with Fu-Gee-La, but Lauryn Hill is so smooth in this one.

19.x - Toto - Rosanna

Africa gets all the love today, but IMO Rosanna is a better song. they actually have so many great songs (I'm a big fan), but I think Rosanna highlights all the best parts of what they can do.

19.10 - Aldous Harding - The Barrel

I haven't drafted any artists from Down Under yet.  There are a ton of excellent young female singer/songwriters from Australia and New Zealand that I can't namecheck because they haven't been drafted yet.

Harding is from New Zealand but now lives in Wales. I thought I might have drafted this song before but I would have remembered the ridiculous video. "The Barrel" has always been my favorite song of hers but I've gone back and listened to her earlier stuff and still like it the best.

Sorry I've been AWOL, been super busy.

To make it up to y'all, I'magonna give you a little treat for your earballs.

Advance notice for this one...first, go ahead and bust out what ever chill enhancing methods you commonly partake in, and second, grab your most bestest headphones (notice I didn't say "air pods") and fire up this song

You can thank me later Brohans

19.14 - K/DA - "Pop/Stars"

There's a lot of K-Pop options on the board (literally any of them), but I'll go with this.  K/DA is a virtual K-Pop girl group consisting of 2 South Koreans and a rotating cast of 2 Americans.  It's a song that you would conceptually think would be awful (and many of you probably will think it's awful), given that it was formulated by Riot Games to promote their video game League of Legends.  It became an unexpected smash hit, charting in at least 17 countries; they've become so popular that it has become a huge event whenever they release a new single.

They've had multiple #1's (including this one) on the US Billboard World Digital chart, ranking the best-selling foreign language singles by digital sales, and scattered top 10's on other various countries' charts.  The running gag is that Riot is better at making music than they are at making video games.

Anyway, they're great and this song is catchy as hell, with the bonus of a solid Korean-language rap second verse and unique code-switching English/Korean lyrics interspersed throughout.

I'm running out of countries here, I'm sorry.

19 down, only like 190 more countries to go

Round 18.xx - The Pharcyde - Ya Mama

And now for some consciousness

Brothers and sisters!

Round 19.xx - Seafood - Folksong Crisis

In conjunction with the thread I started tonight, this song. Features a beautiful bassoon interlude, probably the only one in this thread, actually. It makes the song.

I hope your wretched town will fall

Followed your instructions to the letter

Soul Flower is my groove

I need some zig-zags, zig-zags
I remember my friend walking in the room (He's the same guy that walked in on the Stooges, come to think of it. I always tell that story when I talk about the Stooges. He walked in on Fun House and just said "What a groove!") Anyway, he walked in on this line and just was keeled over in laughter...

Shot him in the ### on the downstroke

Might be iconic, but I don't like this.  It's just cheesy.

My pick would have been C'etait Toi (You Were the One).  Somehow, he managed to get an exact French/English translation to rhyme and scan.  That's a major accomplishment.  And it's even a lovely song.

Anyway, they're great and this song is catchy as hell, with the bonus of a solid Korean-language rap second verse and unique code-switching English/Korean lyrics interspersed throughout.

I can't understand a word of it but the Korean language sounds cool when rapped.  I don't want to get political but that's not the case with every language.

Round 18

Kiss- Deuce
Can't argue with this one.....I woulda went with Cold Gin, Strutter, or She.....such a great rock song!.....early Kiss on vinyl had a huge influence on me.  All my buddies older siblings were into em.....the makeup, the aura......it was cool......I realized later how cheesy it all is, but I still dig the old stuff.....it's good rock and roll

Was between this and Strutter. After the Beatles,Kiss was the next band I fell in love with as a 10 year old in 1975.

The Smiths? Never heard of them.

Not surprising. They were supposedly a really big thing in some people's college dorms, but no one has been able to prove their popularity in this country by any statistical measure or report from the 80's, things like sales, radio station airplay or surveys of club DJs.

Oh my.

19:28

I can't leave Montrose off this list. They were recently brought up in another thread so I thought for sure someone would take them. I also have to go a bit chalky with this pick since their best song was also probably their most well known. But, the fact that it has been a staple of Sammy's for years regardless of who he's playing with says a lot. Montrose was probably also the last straight up rock band I got into before my tastes veered off in a bit of a different direction...

Montrose - Rock Candy
