THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

It ain't that deep, by the way
Great track. I'd missed it the first time around while I was off being old. I remember it got plenty of attention that year, but so did SZA and others, and I pretty much just missed it. It was SZA and Kelela getting major attention in 2017, IIRC.

Yeah, I looked that up. I remember both and wanting to check them out that year in my vow to get back into new music. I never really did. I missed out. Oh well. Nice to be reminded and check it out, finally.

You’re welcome
A worthy opponent for sure. But 30 seconds pales in comparison to a 15 hour... err I mean minute boat torture. Especially when you factor in the inevitable 5 minute delay of game hold up in the Himalayas.

I slipped down scorchy's 1988 wormhole today. went through it start to finish. been a latter half of da 80s day here, so I'll offer two "best ofs" I think won't make his list, but would probably be top 25ish for me.

21. Julian Cope - Charlotte Anne

22. The Screaming Tribesman - I got a Feeling

I think something that ruins a lot of 80s music for people is the videos. Great music all day with scorchy's picks.... turrrrble, distracting, awful, music wrecking videos.

Round 23.xx

De La Soul ft. Redman - Oooh

I have no business selecting a best De La song, partially because I don't know the catalog front to back, nor do I even have an infallible opinion about my own thoughts about their songs. One day it's "Magic Number," one day it's "Rock.Co Kane Flow," one day it's that roller skating jam from Saturday.

But this is the one I loved so much as a twenty-six year old that I went out and bought the CD back when weekly pay wouldn't really permit (I worked non-profit in a big city. It was not conducive to spendy living.)

This is the club track I loved.

Saturday night dedication, not part of the best:

This one goes to Tasker, who I know has selected this song and has even sniped me in drafts when it comes to this album. This is the re-mix so it's a little off-kilter, but it's still awesome.

Talib Kweli ft. Mos Def, Jay-Z, Kanye West - Get By (Re-mix)

Because of crap like this from him and I am tired of it. If he kept yap shut you wouldn't have heard a peep out of me.
Somehow, I doubt that.  Please go away.  I understand you really like music, but you have no social skills at all.  More like negative skills.  Just leave, please.

This has been a gigantic fishing trip to get people arguing and to get them banned.

Taking the bait is stupid. Watching this person unfold his ugliness is too much for me.
But not for me, apparantly.  I would have been the first to reply, but I went out for dinner.  I came back to a squillion posts.

I have to compliment you on your restraint.  I had rather more pithy thoughts.  But this sums it up for me.

I was simply noting that the draft was officially over (or so I thought per those pesky rules). The spread sheet now lists everyone's 20 selections in order of round and there is no place for post Round 20 selections. I didn't think it was right that people should start making 21st round selections, so I expressed my opinion about picks being made after Round 20.
Piss off.

No, I didn't want anything more than the draft to end when it was supposed to, which was the point of my first rather innocuous (or so I thought) comment to Steve Tasker who had asked, "Are we still draftin'?" and I said in response:

I don't see how that indicates me wanting to start a fight and for everybody to be miserable, but believe what you want to believe.
See my previous post.

Horrors!

I gave my opinion of what people should do!!! What outrageous behavior and completely beyond the pale on my part. How presumptuous of me to think that was allowed in this thread (must have thought I was in the Politics Sub Forum).
See previous two posts.  You are an ###.

What the heck happened to music drafts lol?

I remember the friendly discussion, good chat and constant learning.

Now we get first timers trying to dictate how things are run? Just sit back, observe, have fun, talk about the music you love and I dunno, be deferential to people who have done dozens of these things.

Good luck with that.  There's nothing quite like human itching powder to make things bad for everyone.

I do miss your antipodean picks, though.  I think of you when I'm checking out music from that part of the world.

Thanks. Thats nice of you. In truth I probably picked less Australian songs than others, except for the weird ones. My musical heart lies in the UK, Western and Northern Europe.

Hope all is well, this draft notwithstanding lol. Pretty certain any future music drafts will be missing a certain someone.

Round 22: Rufus -  "Tell Me Something Good"

Stevie Wonder was so hot during the early/mid-70s, he gave this song away and made a career for these folks. The main reason Stevie doesn't get covered all that much is because his vocal melodies are so off-kilter and tricky (people like Sinatra would sing them "straight" and suck all of the life out of them).

Well, guess who COULD sing those quirky melodies? Force Of Nature and All-Around Queen Of The World Chaka Kahn, that's who.

Rufus and Chaka would go on to have fine careers. Thanks yet again, Stevie.

@squistion, please add to the spreadsheet. Thanks.

This has been a draft like no other.

I blame the unusual glue that seemed to hold the previous ones together. I think we might have sniffed too much of it and the bad effects just all came out during this one. If that's the case, then we've got a goldmine of a potentially life-altering ether on our hands, so long as we can control the outbursts that the glue apparently gives way to at some point.

Round 24: Righteous Brothers - "You've Lost That Loving Feeling"

This may be the best true duet in rock history - a heavy admission from someone who thinks Marvin & Tammi or the Everlys are the peak of how you sing with another person. It's certainly, to me, Spector's finest production and the band is incredible. But it's really about those two voices: Bill's the star here, but Bobby's parts give me goosebumps. This is soul music at its best.

@squistion, please add to the spreadsheet. Thanks.

Round 25: The Chiffons - "One Fine Day"

The apogee of the 60s girl group scene. Written by Goffin & King, produced by The Tokens, it was a Carole demo. Her lead was erased and the sound remixed with the Chiffons vocals on top. That's King on the iconic piano part and I swear it sounds like her on harmony vocals.

Bruce Springsteen pretty much ripped this song off for the first 10 years of his career. So did the Ramones.

Anyone who says rock was dead between Februarys 1959 & 1964 needs to reckon with this record, because it rarely gets better than this.

@squistion, please add to the spreadsheet. Thanks

Seriously just ducking stop. Who cares if some one makes a 21st round pick?

I agree with everyone that said you purposely tried to sucked the fun out of this and now you continue. If it wasn’t on purpose than you should look into your personality disorder.

Hopefully this is your first and last music draft - I’ll go on record and say it’s the last one I’ll participate in with you because I can control that. I love these things normally but I’d rather sit out than deal with your nonsense.
I mentioned this earlier in the draft, but having a stepson on the spectrum has made me more aware of the personality cues.  I don't know if it pertains to squiz, but the symptoms are there (doesn't do sarcasm well, the rules have to be clearly defined and followed, etc.).  I've come to the conclusion, whether it's autism or not, that he's not purposely trying to ruin things, but that he just can't help it.  If I'm hitting the nail on the head, then I think he could redeem himself by admitting he needs some help trying to fit in here socially and is willing to accept some help/constructive criticism.  Otherwise, it's best that he sits future drafts out.

this is where I ended up by the end of last night.

what has always been a fun thing with fun folk was getting the fun sucked out of it. so I decided to just put the fun-sucker on ignore. not something I normally do- but something I can control here...no need to let somebody else ruin my fun.

I've had the exact same thoughts. If he were to say- you know what, I'm on the spectrum and this kind of thing is my usual trigger... it would be easier to be supportive and part of the discussion and not get sucked into the fun-ruination. ownership, like djackson does, would help a ton. but without that, its easier for me to just ignore him.

Totally and if the attitude/behavior persists, we'd all be well served to follow suit.

it's sad, tbh. I haven't ever done this- spent the last couple decades here just not reading posts by people who seem to be trolling or purposely antagonist without intention of genuine discussion. it felt easy enough, and tbh the threads I usually occupy- soccer, music/film, 10k... are all full of solid folk who can disagree and discuss respectfully.

but over the years, the soccer thread in particular has had a couple of folk who seem to intentionally disregard discussion and just crap on things- mindlessly, or with the intent of crapping on things. LHucks was one... and fortunately he just moved on or got suspended. We've had another recently, and it was turning into similar bs as squiz and this thread- so I finally made the move to just put them on ignore. don't love it- because I like discussion... but there was no viable discussion to be had unfortunately, so finally just pulled the plug.

I made a point of PMing squis when the Smiths thing became ultra-unbearable- just to take it out of the thread... something else I normally don't do- why not discuss things out in the open? but he never replied.... so in all honesty- that, and this other stuff yesterday was enough for me to be done there too.

Honestly it's the right thing to do personally and for the board.  Oddly enough, there are people who I had on ignore before this thread that I began following again.  As you mentioned, "there was no viable discussion to be had" so rather than get stressed out or baited into a worthless discussion I just put them on ignore.  It's been nice getting to know them better and see beyond the divisiveness of the PSF which was where our paths were crossing.

I see the problem in there somewhere....
