Thoughts on Kolb (1 Viewer)

I'm totally lost on Kolb. There is such a limited amount of data to judge this guy on that I am having trouble projecting him for this week. I like how he faired last year, but that vs some mediocre defenses. I don't like how he has looked in preseason and in limited time this year, but he has a lot of weapons and SF has looked bad on defense. The Iggles are also traveling from east to west coast, which has shown to cause problems for player performance.

I'm looking for some opinions on how you think Kolb will fair this week. Dodds and company have him rated at qb16...I'm just not feeling real good about his prospects this week.

The mediocre Dodds ranking reflects the same confusion. I expect Kolb will play fine...likely even well. A bigger dtermining factor will be: Which niners team shows up? The one that laid down at Seattla and KC, or the other one that took the defending champs to OT?

SF is an enigma this year, but their backs are against the wall and I expect them to come out firing. No result would come as a big surprise...by extension...no Kolb numbers would come as a huge surprise.

i have SF picked to win this one

if kolb gets sacked once i expect to see him enter panic mode and start throwing picks

In Andy Reid I trust. I am starting Kolb with confidence.

The bigger concern is McCoy, for the screen/swing passes are the throws that will add up over the game and give Kolb 20-25 points.

I think something very important is being left out here, he wont have Vick coming in to break his rhythm. Grant it we have very little to go off of for him but his 2 starts last year Vick was not an issue, last week when he wasnt terrible no Vick. The amount of time Vick saw in week 1 was insane and I think Reid killed any chance Kolb had to succeed by not letting him get in a rhythm before trotting Vick out there early and often.

Considered starting him over McNabb... don't think I can make myself go there though. I doubt Kolb will score more than last week.
Same decision for me. Kolb's tempting against that awful pass defense but I still went with McNabb despite him being against the good Pack pass defense. I'll believe Kolb when I see it - I still think he can be good, but he now needs to show it and he's not done so so far.

Is SF's pass D that awful? They looked pretty servicable against NO's offense.

Oops, nevermind. I got him confused with Eli who's against Houston. Had that decision in another league (vs. Shawn Hill).

Stilll don't see how Kolb was "terrible" last week. NOt only were his numbers OK, but he nearly brought the Eagles back. The check down's, while boring, were somewhat effective.

This is a potential trap game for Philly, but I expect Kolb to play well.

Very possibly this... :goodposting: People should have McCoy going if they can. I know practice went "very good" this week and the team is feeling better about the weeks preparation this past week than they did in the week leading up to the DMac homecoming. Practices were rough then.... All in all, I think Kolb and the O are excited about this evening. :football:

never seen a young promising player treated so unfairly/unkindly. especially one that got off to a start like he did in those first two games. its really bizarre.

I think Kolb throws for 300 with 2TDs a 2 INTs. Combine Niners suspect passing game and the fact that Kolb is motivated I think he will do ok.

sup alex smith
He said unfairly/unkindly.
id say alx smith was treated pretty unfairly/unkindly
He still is the starting QB for the 49ers. He is being treated very kindly. What's unfair is that he is the starting QB for the 49ers.
i just meant all the stuff he went through. the multiple OCs, being thrown into the fire too early, terrible teams, forced to play while injuredhes still ####### it up though

Seems on that drive he showed no fear in looking more than 2 yards beyond the LOS.

Biased owner who started him in 2 of 3 leagues I own him in.

Decent, not great stat line...but I liked what I saw. SF defenders got fingertips on no less then 6 well thrown balls that would have either kept drives going or been TD's. Solid defense and somewhat conservative play calling in second half was what kept Kolb from putting up fantastic numbers.

Probably not enough to completely silence the critics, but more then enough to give supporters reason to hope.

Kolb needs a formal introduction to DeSean Jackson.

He only throws swing passes to the RBs and intermediate stuff to Maclin and Celek.

he is really, really comfortable with Celek ... seems to force the ball to him instead of forcing the ball to Maclin or Jackson

I thought he looked like an above average backup QB. Lots of tipped balls, not sure if that was SF's defense more than Kolb, but it looked sloppy. He showed a nice deep ball on a couple incomplete passes, but overall, I wasn't blown away. Aside from the 1-2 bonehead plays, I think Alex Smith out-played him.

Above average backup?? For a guy starting maybe his fourth or fifth professional game, on the road, I thought he did very well. As a Kolb dynasty owner, I'm hoping he gets one more start against Atlanta this week before the reigns are turned back over to Vick.

Stretched the field more.

Still dink & dunk.

Looks like he's pissing off DJax.

Did the Eagles w/Kolb at QB make the 49ers look that bad or are they really that bad (i.e. 0-5)

SF wins by 10+, Kolb is Kolb so don't expect much.
tons of insight here - no blind Eagles hate or anything - how'd the girls do this weekend? Kolb I think was very hesitant to throw into double coverage (desean) but did find maclin/celek often I think, which isn't necessarily a bad thing - if desean can keep his cool (and take off the yankees hat) for a little while - defenses will have to respect celek and maclin more which will open things up for desean - right now he is really just stretching the field and taking 2 defenders with him opening it up for the rest of the skill positions - i thought McCoy looked really good and that is a blessing for Kolb

You might have a good case if the Eagles were thinking about rebuilding this year. However, with the trade of McNabb and the talent of the rest of the team, the expectation for Kolb was a lot higher than being some rookie QB who needs to develop. They expected a polished QB who was ready to lead this team to the playoffs.

He was two Brent Celek drops away from a 350/3 day. Instead, he had a pretty darn good day against a mediocre defense, which is something we still haven't seen Michael "hey I just beat up on two of the worst defenses in football and now everyone thinks I'm awesome" Vick.

In other news, Ryan Fitzpatrick went for 320/3 against the Jags today. If he played Detroit next week would everyone think he was Buffalo's savior as well?

I came into the game down on Kolb, but left thinking the guy has potential. Reminded me a bit...(just a bit now) of when A-Rod first took over the Packers. Still a ways to go but someone you can build on. The problem is he needs to play..sitting at this point will only hurt him. So Andy has another problem on his hands.

:lmao: Dude, you crack me up. Its funny when a hater just can't admit his pre conceived opinion was wrong. So except for 1 play, Alex Smith was better? Put down the "I love Vick" poster and explain how? Dont worry, Vick's job is still safe..... For now.

I watched the game and though Kolb threw the ball very well. I'm not an expert on throwing mechanics and such but what stuck out to me is that when he threw the screen pass or a dump off. He always led the receiver. I've seen other QBs who throw to the receiver in that situation but they then have to catch and start moving forward. I know this is not great analysis but I thought it showed he was in control of the ball and to me (again, not super knowledgeable about mechanics, etc...) looks like he has the goods to be a great quarterback in the league.

I also think that right now he is making the safest throws he can. He knows that he needs to perform well if he wants to one day regain the starting job so I just don't think he will be taking shots down the field to DeSean Jackson in double coverage. I'd be willing to bet that if/when Kolb gets the starting job (and I do think he will, even if it's next season) we will see him take more shots down the field because he will have a longer leash.

Just go ahead and say you don't like Mike Vick. It will save you a few keystrokes.

Another Vick hater.....awesome.

Kolb looked better than I thought he would, but I wouldn't say he played well. He was lucky a few passes weren't picked and he was immobile in the pocket leading to several sacks that could have been avoided.

I can see this. I haven't gone back and watched the whole game but I liked what I saw of him. Seemed to be doing lots of the little things right. Big thing is I agree he needs to play to get better. Which is going to be problematic in PHI. Although as Reid says, that's a great problem having 2 guys that can play.J

:goodposting: He was plenty mobile....did you miss the Celek TD? ON a few of those sacks, the pocket completely collapsed with NOWHERE to escape...not even Vick could have avoided a couple of those. Nobody will mistake Kolb for Vick, but Kolb is above average in mobility.
