At the beginning of the year there was "so much" depth and "not much" difference from say 1-5 in the TE's. Gates, Clark, Jergodly Finley and the like.
Well, here we are, it's Gates and the world...
A lot of discussion has taken place over the past couple weeks with a couple big names going down, but lets get a discussion going not on singular replacements are, or who should be targeted on the WW. What are the "tiers" of tight ends at this point that give a real advantage over the competition?
This is not a who do I trade for, but it may help some of us determine whether its worth seeking a trade for an upgrade. Tight end is always an interesting position in that they rarely go off the draft board early, yet are difficult to trade for because IF you have a Gates, there is NO replacement out there should you trade him away. But what about a Witten, or a Marcedes Lewis, are they difference makers enough to warrant trading a good, even startable #2 RB? That is what Id like to discuss.
As I see it:
Gates - If you can deal for him, good luck.
Witten - Resurgence this year, perhaps Kitna helps him?
Marcedes Lewis - It has been a decent enough sample size to conjecture that he is for real finally as an offensive threat.
V Davis - Have to see how bad his injury is, but definately has the upside to be a difference maker
Ben Watson - Just a 1/2 season mirage, or worth exploring
Keller - Has that upside, but, especially with Holmes back, will he get the looks?
Tamme - Gold or fools gold? If he is 70% of Clark, he is a difference maker. He could be that.
Miller (OAK) - Hurting, but has been consistent
Gonzo - Old but still ok - but enough upside to warrant trading value for him if you have a WW type tight end?
A Hernandez - young, but enough upside to warrant trading for?
Detroit TEs - Really good offense, but again, is there enough upside
Cooley - Solid, not spectacular
So other than gates, I would think Witten and M Lewis have some value, although that value may be questionable. It's only inflated because who amongst those next tiers (or elsewhere) can give a team a real advantage week to week?
Curious as to others thoughts on the TE situation, who might be worth targeted in a deal, and whether it is even worth the effort unless the guy you target is gates (in which case you best come to the table with frank gore type value, and even then you may not be able to pry Gates away since there is no viable replacement for him)
