Tight Ends - A Tricky Position (1 Viewer)

At the beginning of the year there was "so much" depth and "not much" difference from say 1-5 in the TE's. Gates, Clark, Jergodly Finley and the like.

Well, here we are, it's Gates and the world...

A lot of discussion has taken place over the past couple weeks with a couple big names going down, but lets get a discussion going not on singular replacements are, or who should be targeted on the WW. What are the "tiers" of tight ends at this point that give a real advantage over the competition?

This is not a who do I trade for, but it may help some of us determine whether its worth seeking a trade for an upgrade. Tight end is always an interesting position in that they rarely go off the draft board early, yet are difficult to trade for because IF you have a Gates, there is NO replacement out there should you trade him away. But what about a Witten, or a Marcedes Lewis, are they difference makers enough to warrant trading a good, even startable #2 RB? That is what Id like to discuss.

As I see it:

Gates - If you can deal for him, good luck.

Witten - Resurgence this year, perhaps Kitna helps him?

Marcedes Lewis - It has been a decent enough sample size to conjecture that he is for real finally as an offensive threat.

V Davis - Have to see how bad his injury is, but definately has the upside to be a difference maker

Ben Watson - Just a 1/2 season mirage, or worth exploring

Keller - Has that upside, but, especially with Holmes back, will he get the looks?

Tamme - Gold or fools gold? If he is 70% of Clark, he is a difference maker. He could be that.

Miller (OAK) - Hurting, but has been consistent

Gonzo - Old but still ok - but enough upside to warrant trading value for him if you have a WW type tight end?

A Hernandez - young, but enough upside to warrant trading for?

Detroit TEs - Really good offense, but again, is there enough upside

Cooley - Solid, not spectacular

So other than gates, I would think Witten and M Lewis have some value, although that value may be questionable. It's only inflated because who amongst those next tiers (or elsewhere) can give a team a real advantage week to week?

Curious as to others thoughts on the TE situation, who might be worth targeted in a deal, and whether it is even worth the effort unless the guy you target is gates (in which case you best come to the table with frank gore type value, and even then you may not be able to pry Gates away since there is no viable replacement for him)

I would go after Tamme right now if making a run at a championship. You will get 8 Clark-like weeks from him and he can be had pretty cheap still. That is the guy I am targeting.

Everyone else in that price range is still too inconsistent for my liking.

Good call on Tamme, shouldnt have overlooked him - he might very well have that upside we are seeking, but the question is whether the owner has Clark like value in his mind cause not many will give up that much value in a trade.

Curious what comparables in value would be for Tamme though, which comes back to the question of TE as a tricky position. Is it worth say, L. Blount for Tamme - but Blount could be the real deal and especially in traditional leagues (1QB 2RBs 2 or 3 WRS 1TE) even if Tamme becomes Clark, is it worth it.

No Vernon Davis? Is his injury worse than I had read?
No, I was just going off the top of my head while working so bound to miss some guys. I think Davis might be a nice buy low with his injury but we do need to clarify how hurt he really is. For teams looking at the Playoffs, he might be a nice target right now that could give an advantage over say 65% of the other teams come playoff time.

Gates is so far and away better than everyone else, it is amazing. In TE mandatory leagues, the Gates owners are going to have a BIG advantage over everyone else.

I'd agree... he is out of this discussion for all intents and purpose. I have him in two leagues, and cant imagine a trade I'd do to give him up (if I needed say a QB AND a RB and I could really improve at two positions to lose value at TE I'd consider but that is not my place right now). I want him in another, and nothing, including a package with Frank Gore in a RB heavy league can pry Gates away from the owner.

I think Watson is one of those guys that will continue to be under the radar, but will produce.

Wallace and/or Delhomme will likely be back this week, either of which is an upgrade from McCoy. And they are probably good enough to move the chains, with Watson the best (and seemingly only reliable) receiving option they have.
