Time for making draft picks (1 Viewer)

RushHour

Just wondering what people think is a reasonable time limit for making picks in an online draft setup. 1 minute? 2 minutes? Longer? Shorter? I'm in a large roster 16 team league and just conscious of the fact that some people have competing commitments (e.g family) and won't want a draft lasting 12 hours or something. I'm thinking a minute - would that be unnecessarily stingy?

I've been in more than a few drafts with 20+ rounds where they give different times for different parts of the draft. First half of the draft there are usually bigger decisions being made and weighter trades. Second half not so much. I'm in one now that has 3 minutes for the first 10 rounds and then drops to 2 minutes till the end. Seems to work pretty well for us.

Last year we did 2 minutes and it was too long. Too many guys took the full 2 mins and it started to drag, especially towards the end. We have the options for 60s and 90s, and I've gone with 60s. I'm curious if anyone has experience with this being too short of a time limit. I guess I'll load up DD and try it out in there to get a feel for it.

Reading your post makes me realize that the time you allow really depends on the owners in your draft. I think if eveyrone used the full 3 minutes in our league it would be too long too. Fortunately all of our owners pretty much know who they are targeting in each round and have second and third options on hand. Normally picks are made instantly or within 30 seconds or so. The 3 minute time limit comes into play only if there is a last minute trade trying to go through or if someone needs to double check something because the player he thought he was going to pick was just taken a pick or two before.I would also think you'd have to guage not only how prepared your owners are but also how "into it" they are. For example, a guy who's playing just because his buddies at work are might start to give you the "Are we almost done?!?" line after 30 minutes. On the flip side, a group of experienced owners may really enjoy the draft experience (especially if it's live) and a few hours or more may not bother them at all.

We do 5 minutes for the first two rounds and then 2 1/2 for the rest. Its a 12 team league so our drafts last about 4 hours in total.

For the most part eveyone takes about 1-2 minutes but we are a heavy trading league so its nice to give some time to work out a trade. There are some guys that want one minute picks so it can end quickly. My stance is that draft day is the best day of the year, i can sit there for 5-6 hours if needs be. its just a great time
