Time for Skins to look to Colt? (1 Viewer)

...BUT, Campbell seems to be, at best, an average NFL QB. I know it's early, and he's very young, but Campbell just doesn't seem to consistently hit the simple passes and mostly never hits the BIG PLAY. He's got size and athletic ability, but I'm not sold on his NFL QB skills. Ball seems to be thrown to covered WR's or thrown on the wrong side (inside or outside).

Question for Mr. Zorn: consider #5 Colt Brennan?

He looked amazing in pre-season (I know it's PRE-season), BUT he REALLY LOOKED GOOD and he might just deserve a shot, say by week 6 home against the Rams (when the Skin fans are frustrated with an ugly offense and a record of 1-4 or 2-3).

Have never been impressed with Campbell. I think he's been in too many systems. Does that ever work out for a QB?

Really? The Skins will take the 2008 season to work out the kinks on offense and get their young wideouts up to game speed. As soon as that occurs Jason Campbell will be fine. He's got more skills than Colt and he's also go the frame that can stay on the field for 16 games. Brennan is a poor man's Jeff Garcia.

Moss and Randle El are serviceable starters. The truth is, Campbell has never shown any sustained signs of being better than mediocre.

That doesn't mean Brennan is the answer though.

You can change all the parts of the car you want but if the driver doesn't know what he is doing or what direction to steer the car, it doesn't matter what tires you have or how much HP under the hood.

Zorn better get a quick handle on being a play caller and offensive coordinator let alone head coach or it doesn't matter who is the QB.

Don't forget Todd Collins was the reason they got in the playoffs last year (4-0 when he played last 4 weeks and had a QB rating over 100). If they're giving up on Campbell that early, they'll go to Collins and hope to muster 8 or 9 wins.If that happens though, Colt is probably first choice to start in 09.

Ball seems to be thrown to covered WR's
That seemed to be his biggest problem, both tonight and in the preseason. His receivers get absolutely no separation.
Actually he had two passes knocked away in the end zone where the WR's had space and could have been TD's. The first one would have required a higher throw to clear the shallow leaping defender (the cover man was beat) that batted it away. That would have been a tough throw, but not impossible. The second one his WR had coverage beat and had an open endzone corner. Instead of throwing the ball over the defenseless outside shoulder he threw it inside which lead the WR into the recovering D who tipped it away.More importantly the correct throw on both would have resulted in TD's or at worst simple incompletions. Both the throws he made wound up with defender's hands on the ball in the red zone, never a good sign. I'm not writing him off at QB yet, but he is definitely behind the learning curve and looked lost out there. This is his 3rd season, he should not be making those simple mistakes.

I think Campbell has a fine skill set for the offense, but you really do have to give him some time to learn. My biggest concern tonight was seeing him lock on to his primary receiver and literally not look away. Take the snap - stare at Thrash/Moss, and chuck the ball. Never scanned for his #2 or #3, NEVER looked for his check down. If he can remedy that- ala the WCO, I think they'll be ok. That alone would be a big step forward for this offense.

Campbell is a decent NFL quarterback with potential for more. His fantasy stats just don't match his true contribution (see advanced football metrics a la Football Outsiders).

Campbell seemed to take some big strides forward last season - at times he actually looked pretty good.

I'm sure learning an entirely new system, especially when he was just getting comfortably in the previous one, has not been easy on him. So, I'd say there's still hope for him but if he still looks this lost come mid-season, he'll be in trouble.

Agree it's best to switch, but Todd Collins is the answer for a team that's looking to win now. (I happen to believe Todd can be a solid starter for a year or two -- which at that time, look to Colt -- who I was very impressed with).

I think Campbell's an AWFUL fit for this offense. (I don't care if he did a West coast type system at Auburn, he can't at this level). West coast is about timing, 3 steps and throw. Campbell isn't that type QB nor ever will be.

I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. I thought I was in The Shark Pool...
Not this time of year. This is when everybody in America just drafted some team out of a magazine, hadn't paid any attention to football between the Super Bowl and the night before their draft, and now found their way onto a message board. I'm not referring to the original poster necessarily, just message boards in general. Lots of nonsense gets spit out onto the board this time of year by casual fans who really don't understand very much about how things in the NFL or FF really work.

Rumor has it that Collins is having a harder time w/ the playbook than Campbell. Yes, Campbell's best season @ Auburn was in the WCO, but he has no trust in the plays or his WRs. He is holding the ball WAYYY too long. The 1st sack tonite was also entirely his fault, as he had a great pocket, then rolled outside to the right, right into defenders! Looked like a rookie Madden player tonite! His deep ball also sucks. he's got all the arm he needs, but no loft at all on the long ball. Honestly, he looked better @ Auburn. That said, I still think he can be a good NFL QB, and if things haven't started to turn around for him by week 5 or 6, I'll jump on the Brennan bandwagon. The entire team seemed to have more life w/ Colt in the game, and all the problems he had in Mobile seem to have been corrected by his surgeon.

Brennan has eons to go before he's ready (& I'm a fan). You can be sure Zorn is fully aware of Colt's limitations right now. Like I said, I like Brennan, but I'm not sure he'll ever become the starter in Washington. They'll likely draft their QB of the future next year if decent value presents itself on day 1.

Colt Brennan is every bit as ready as Angela Lansbury to play NFL quarterback at this time.
:thumbup:Brennan showed some moxie in the preseason, but his footwork and throwing motion need a makeover. I don't want to see him on the field this year.

IIRC the west coast offense is prolly more similar to the hawaii/june jones system, and he probably is better suited for that system.

Overlooked in tonights game is that Campbell looked decent in the hurry up, which was much more "conventional" than the WCO they painfully stuck with far too long.

if he ran this in college he has problems deeper than i thought...

This is the funniest spoof of a forum thread I have ever read!

Did all you guys work out the details of the discussion flow via phone?

It's week 1 and a young QB playing in a new system looked subpar on the road against the Super Bowl champs and it's time to panic? That's making a bad situation worse. It's far to early to give up on Campbell right now. He may or may not be the answer but benching him after one game would not only kill his development it would be the beginning of the end of the Zorn era because it would be very apparent he did not have a plan but was making knee-jerk decisions.

Did you miss the part where this team is implementing a WCO on the fly? Jebus Christmas.

I would love to see COlt Brennan get a shot and the way the offense played last night I beleive you might see him by years end. But maybe not this quick.
