Terrell Owens confirmed today that he was fined for being late to a team meeting Friday.

"I just overslept," he said. "I was late and [the fine] was the consequence of that. It's not anything I tried to do intentional. It's not the first time and it probably won't be the last time, but like I said, I'm trying to do everything I can to get back on the field, so it's one of those things that happens."

Owens continues to list himself as "day to day" with a sore hamstring, although he didn't say whether he was going to practice today. Practice is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Owens smiled as he talked to reporters about his ongoing soap opera.

"This is just unfortunate," he said. "I think everybody has overslept, you know, once or twice in their life before. Nothing intentional, it's just something that happened. And there's nothing I can do about it."

Owens said Friday was the first time he'd been late for a meeting since joining the Cowboys. Asked about reports saying he'd been late to several meetings, he said, "I dont know where that came from."

He also apologized to his teammates.

"Across the league, not just football, these types of things happen even going through high school, you're tardy sometimes, you're late . These are the type things that happen. Obviously, there are consequences, you know, of those actions and I was fined. Other than that, for me, it's not a big deal. It wasn't something I purposely tried to do. It's something that I will try to make more of an effort to get here on time. Other than, it's really not a big issue."\

It seems like either he's being sincere, or he has been well coached on what to say/do. I think he did a lot to diffuse the situation. Coupled with Parcells' presser where he did much the same thing, it seems all parties involved are doing much to calm everyone down.

Wouldn't that be nice...will probably be as successful as getting a pork chop out of a pitbull's mouth though...

This is such a non issue. People miss meetings all the time. Particularly self absorbed millionaire prima donnas. That's just the way it is. If it wasn't TO this would be nothing more than a tiny blurb at the end of some columnist's story talking about how the guy could've bought 1500 new alarm clocks with the money he spent on the fine....

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill...

The season can't start soon enough so that TO can get on the field and reporters can shut up all this nonsense.

Kind of a "The boy who cried wolf" type of thing, but I'd be happy with that if I were a Cowboys fan... Seemed pretty sincere, he took the blame, didn't complain about the punnishment, apologized, said he'd make an effort to improve, etc.

If this weren't TO we'd probably be saying "No biggy, lets move on."

As a TO owner and a Cowboy fan, I'm glad he apologized and doesn't seem pissed at the Cowboys for fining him. That would make this situation worse.

Ever hear of an alarm clock?? We adults use them every day...

I overslept this morning, and I'm an adult.

The media are making mountains out of molehills in Dallas. He'll strap it up on September 10th if he's healthy and torch the Jaguars.

I can honestly say I have never ever overslept for work since college. Put the alarm clock away from your bed so you have to get up to turn it off...

You know, he didn't deny that he's been late. Merely gave a Clintonesque answer that makes you hear what you want to hear. Oh, yes, he was coached in what to say. Very carefully coached.

I smell Rosenhaus. Thats probably a good thing. He's smart enough to try to calm TO down.

Yes, having re-read the transcript a couple of times, it was well constructed.

Oversleeping once = Not a big deal

However, I wonder when he called and let the team know. I remember Michael Westbrook was sick once and didn't even call to say he wasn't showing up.

I just heard Mike Irvin on the Dan Patrick Show, he said that he's talked to Elderado and he was very apologitic.

Good point :) This might be an exception to the rule, however.

The truth of the matter: Owens isn't the brightest player out there, but he's not evil.

What the media prints: Owens isn't the brightest player out there, but he's not evil.

as a TO owner I am happy to see he apologized - maybe this is finally headed in the right direction - now just throw him the damn ball!

uh, sorry, wrong egotistical WR.

I think he'll have to practice most of the week. My gut feeling is that he'll sit this week and be on the practice field 9/5 to begin prep for Jacksonville. The guy is a headcase, but I think he wants to play, play well, and play as soon as the games mean something.

I set 2 in case the power goes out or I turn one off without being fully awake. ##### happens.

Ever hear of an alarm clock?? We adults use them every day...
Interesting UM. When do you think he has to get on the practice field in order to be available for the game?J

The truth of the matter: Owens isn't the brightest player out there, but he's not evila media whore.

What the media prints thinks: Owens helps us keep each news cycle going. It's still 10 days from the Steelers - Dolphins, and we need all the eyeballs we can get between now and then.
FIXED.

Were the Cowboys still in camp at this point? If so, aren't players usually paired up in the dorms during training camp? How does one oversleep? Either both guys oversleep or one guy basically wakes up and makes no attempt to wake up his roomate before bolting out the door. In the latter case that would mean TO is as popular with his teammates as Cedric Benson!

I tend to agree. I suspect he'll sit out this week. Game is on Thursday. After that, he'll be back on the field.

I will say, however, there's a real probability that he sits out the first 2 weeks and comes back after the bye. Hamstrings linger. Its a long season. I think everyone involved wants the hamstring healed.

If he sits out any regular season games, you can bet your butt he'll be on the field for the Sunday Nighter on NBC against the dreaded Redskins.

this is not making a mountain out of a molehill. Is this particular incident small? of course. But if i were TO, i would be doing everything possible to keep up appearences, given what is going on. When you are a known team cancer who is being given his last shot to contribute AND you have missed all of TC because of what is being reported to be a questionable injury.(i think it is a legit injury) you dont oversleep and miss meetings. Normal human beings just dont do that. You set 2 alarm clocks, hire a wakeup service and train your dog to smack you in hte face at 7am. If TO gave a crap about the dallas cowboysm this wouldnt happen. He may go out on the field in week 1 and score 3 TD's, but it doesnt change the fact that he is a irresponsible me-first player. He may have a great season, but at some point, he will do something major to let his team down....again.

This just adds to my distain of the media --- Since the advent of Cable Tv and the 24 hour news chaneels reports do not report the news the attempt to create it . Whether they are sports reporter or political reporter it seems all you job is to do is attempt to create the scoop or the nonstory that it is

to date my only issues are these ( and i live in dallas so i hear it everyday)

1) wearing non football clothes in an attempt to shine the spotlight on himself (bill should have sent him to the locker room )

2) the comment that "he has ten years of tape to see what i got" you would want him to say " i have been very productive for ten years but every player must prove himself on the field"

On the other side maybe it is a deliberate plan to focus all the media attention on TO thus taking it off the O-line / Rb situation / young defense /bills status

If it wasnt To it would be something

Again this is Nonnews and reporters are just tring to make a living

Done Ranting

I don't see an apology in that blurb just TO preening about how this is no big deal.
