I really like Tommy Kelly, but I was shocked at the size of the contract, especially given that he is coming off a torn ACL. Then again I also really liked Terdell Sands and once he got paid very well last offseason and was invisible last year.

Not sure how many of you are watching the NFL Networks' free agency preview right now but Adam Schefter and the other guys were just talking about the Kelly signing. Schefter said a few of the personnel execs he spoke with DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHO KELLY WAS; and one GM sent him an email remarking how much the Raiders paid Kelly and signed it with FOURTEEN exclamation points! Holy mother of God. That is the most shocking amount I've seen in a long, long while. I like Kelly a lot, but he's the highest paid DT in football and he's coming off of serious knee surgery. That concern alone should have prevented him from getting a contract that would set the precedent in the DT market. Wow.

Totally agree. Al Davis is a lunatic. Thank God Ted Thompson avoids these murky free agent waters. More often than not they bust. See Cledius Hunt and Joe Johnson.

I wonder if this is worse than the 6-year, $78 million deal that Jon Koncak got from the Atlanta Hawks as a backup center. At the time that was more than Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson got paid.

I remember Sports Illustrated having Koncak on the cover with money falling from the sky on him. I seem to recall that even Koncak himself thought the contract was ridiculous but was quoted as saying "What was I supposed to do? Say no?!?" -QG

I think that's Schefter just being a ####-wad b/c he has some personal vendetta against the Raiders and/or Al Davis. Tommy Kelly is a good DE/DT and if he can make the step into pro-bowler and not a step back like Sands it will be well worth it.
