Tony Gonzalez (1 Viewer)

Looking for some insight here on drafting Tony Gonzalez. IMO, there is no doubt he is not the Gonzalez of a short time ago BUT he's still in top 5. Obviously Gates, with Heap and maybe Shockey in the 2 and 3 spots of TE rankings. However, what's everyone's take on Tony G? Is it the blocking issue that is keeping him down? New coach? WR corps hasn't changed, Gonzalez is still a force. Any thoughts or something I am missing?

This year things could be a little different in KC.

Aside from the obvious personel changes in coaching and O-Line (both of which will directly impact Gonzo), the emergence of Sammi Parker could steal even more targets from him. I have to believe right now the ceiling is lower.

Anyone tell me the best a TE coached by Herm Edwards has ever performed?

I understand the talent, mismatches and everthing else that Gonzo provides. But some people have a knack for calling certain plays on offense and some dont. I'm not a huge believer in Herm as an offensive technician (although I am a huge believer in him as a defensive tech and a motivator). I need to see people perform under him first.

Then I'll drink the Kool-Aid.

Tony was AWFUL the weeks he had to stay in and block when Roaf was out.

Now, multiply that by 16 for this year.

I don't like Tony this season.

Gonzalez was the #2 TE in receptions and yardage in 2005. Heap and Shockey are not going to surpass him this year.

True, his main issue last year was TD's. Trent Green has specifically stated that they forgot about Tony in the red zone last year and weren't planning on letting it happen again this year (sorry, no link except my brain). He is still the #1 option in the passing game and could easily outperform Heap & Shockey. That being said, I like Gates, Heap, Gonzalez, Shockey in that order. I think McNair will give Heap a boost this year on what was already a great career.

I think Gonzo will be back to leading the TE this year again. He will not be asked to block as much as when Roaf was out, Turley is competant enough to allow for that (assuming he stays healthy). The emergence of Parker will take a lot of the double teams he was facing away, possibly returning to single LB cover. LJ will easily keep the D's honest.

I don't buy into the Herm Edwards not liking TE. A/ He's never had a TE like Gonzo, and B/ I think he wants to get the TE involved. Any coach who offers a 1st rounder for Jeb Putzier and then Doug Jolley, obviously has passing plans for a TE. I think a 1000yd, 8TD season is in the offing again.
