Tony Romo: Broadcaster (2 Viewers)

I don't hate the guy but there were definitely a few times where I was saying could you just #### for a second. He doesn't have to constantly predict things and could let the game breathe a bit.

He’s not just predicting a run. Stop trying to simplify it to make your incorrect point. He’s calling out where the ball will go and why which educates the viewer. His call before the Gronk sideline catch was an awesome description.
None of us will be happy next season when every football crew has a guy shouting out pre-snap guesses as to what the next play will be.  I get that it amazes and entertains some armchair QB's when Romo correctly guesses a play, but I'd prefer to just watch the game and see what happens. It doesn't do anything for me as a viewer to hear his predictions as the ball is snapped.

I think it's fantastic.  I can't predict plays like that but I can understand what Romo sees when he explains it.  Then explain that to my kids, who are interested in learning why a team is running or passing or targeting a specific player.

But agreed if we get to the point where everyone is trying to hard and butchering it then it will be awful.  But Romo is awesome and the best thing to happen to broadcasting in a long time.

Yeah, it’s not so much the specific play predictions (which are uncanny) but the explain afterwards: why that was the read, and here’s what they did to exploit the defenses alignment. It gives average viewers who never saw a playbook after h.s. a deeper understanding of what works in the NFL & why.

Up to this point a color guy pointing out the sainted "double move!!!!" Was about as high level analysis you could get.

The majority of what Troy gives are anecdote from interviews.

I have liked Romo this season but yesterday he seemed too amped up and was talking too much..sometimes I just want to see the play happen.

How many times did we need to hear Mahomes is a young guy?

Maybe others don’t do it because it’s annoying and doesnt add anything for the viewer? I agree he’s no worse than the average in his profession, which has an amazingly low bar, but is it really his job to predict “its gonna be a run” milliseconds before the snap?  Judging from my twitter feed, most viewers are more excited by Romos predictions than by watching the game.
In that case, like it or not, he’s doing his job.  Keeping fans entertained and wanting to watch his broadcasts.

Now if only Witten and McFarland would react to some twitter feedback...

I think this is a good post  -

@SpaceCoyoteBDS - What’s impressive about Romo as a color comm isn’t that he can ID things. A lot of people even on Twitter can given film. It’s how fast he processes so many things (formations, rotations, numbers, etc) and communicates them that fans love. Processing speed of so much is awesome

Huh.  I got the feeling the "hate" was more people saying he isn't bad but just reacting to all the fawning love for the guy.
He’s good. At times his nonstop talking is annoying as is the spazzing out he’s prone to.

No idea the level of love there is for him, between this thread and looking online he’s got quite the following.

Him and Nantz are a good team.

Hater.

That was genius level broadcasting last night, including Edelman in the slot in OT.

I want to know these things.

Romo is awesome as a broadcaster, and was an awesome QB plagued by bad luck and some poor decisions. I like Romo and wish him well in his new endeavor.

eta* Look into the meaning of the word. He's there to provide "color." He's done that.

Not bad...just the most obnoxious ##### to ever be on the air.
oh come on.  This is the internet and all, but the hyperbole here is weak.

This is an industry that has given us Dennis Miller, Skip Bayless, Jemele Hill, and Tony Siragusa from all corners of the obnoxious spectrum.

I'm grateful for two things :

1.) He's not Phil Simms, he doesn't act like Phil Simms, he doesn't sound like Phil Simms, he doesn't look like Phil Simms and he doesn't give out irons as awards. . . plus on top of all that he's not Phil Simms so he goes up a notch in my book just for not being Phil Simms.

2.) I know it's the "in" thing or whatever to rag on ESPN but, politics and persona's aside, I just cannot stand the way ESPN televises/produces a football game.  It's exactly like what I would imagine a squirrel on crack with ADD sees the world. Seriously.  ESPN will show you EVERY SINGLE DAMN THING but the game.  It goes like this :

Game (these all happen in like one second increments) - pan to crowd, guy in a funny costume because he's at every game, someone with a witty quip on a sign, huddle, coach picking his nose (because he's in a contract year, need a dramatic shot of the coach), QB in huddle (QB has a hurt elbow or something, focus on the injured elbow), dramatic shot of punter (because it's 3rd down and he shanked his last kick), overhead shot, referees (because they just made a controversial call), field goal post flags (no breeze but still why not?), chain gang guys (because they tripped last play) . . . we don't get to see the teams line up, we don't get to see the formations (D or O) and a split second before the ball snaps, they get back to the game, the play happens, play is over.  Now if you WANT to see a replay (controversial, spectacular, etc.)  I don't understand why but it's not gonna happen many times, they have time, they have split screen technology, nope, nope, nope no replay for you.  If the play was a 3 yard run in a hurry up offense, yes sir, they're gonna replay that during the game, during the current play and that portion of the play that just happened that you missed is lost for all time. . . .just sayin'.

And I'm not butthurt or angry or upset, I'm a casual fan and it's just my observation that the world wide leader in sports just seems like (to me anyway) that they focus on making everything OUTSIDE the game dramatic.  My argument is that, usually, the game is dramatic enough on it's own you know?  I just wish they would focus more on the game.  In a blowout, sure, I get it, you need that maybe to keep people's interest.  But in a good game, that stuff just gets real old real quick.

Why is he wasting his talent on football, he needs something more challenging.

And if it must be football.....Coach the Cowboys

I mean he was one of the 10-12 best in the world at what he did in his prime.
I think he was better than that and his  career numbers are impressive. Unfortunately that botched field goal hold in Seattle drove the narrative for his entire career.

He's the best thing going in the broadcast booth today. I love how fired up he gets, especially in crucial situations. When I hear him say "Here we go!", Im usually on the edge of my seat. You can tell he's having a blast, and the bigger the game, the more fun he is to listen to IMO.

He’s outstanding - I’ve watched football for 44 years and he’s one of the very few announcers where I feel like I’m learning as I watch.

I think this is spot on.  What is great about Romo's commentary is that it is in real time.  With Al Michaels and Collinsworth, you get some of the same analysis, but only during the instant replay.  I don't want to see a replay of every single play to have the color guy explain what just happened.  I enjoy the difference of hearing the analysis in real time as I am seeing the game played out live.  Particularly in a 2 minute drill where there isn't always time to replay every down.  I'd rather watch the team scramle back to the line and the QB barking out orders than cut to a telestrator.

Coaching is a grind...do what you love and be happy.

There's a reason why most star athletes don't become coaches.

He's horrible.  So is Witten.  Was hoping it was just a learning curve but I'm not seeing (hearing) it.  At all.
Well you are a glass half empty kinda poster so this isn’t surprising.

Who do you like?

Not everyone loves Romo but I don't think many think he's horrible. Witten is a different story
