Tony Romo: Broadcaster (1 Viewer)

Some time ago my son got me hooked on Andrew Siciliano and the Red Zone channel. When the Red Zone channel came back this year, it was pure joy again. No commercials, no stupid announcers for 8 hours. . . but then you have the Sunday night game. Having to suffer listening to Collinsworth drone on for the evening game feels like punishment for those 8 glorious hours. Ah well.

I didn't think ciceliana was doing it anymore

i've always found this to be like randomly skipping from book to book, missing pages, and saying "yeah, i read the book".

not for me. then, i'll watch 3 hours of a horrible football game because i'm invested as soon as i see the first kick.

Four games at once. You miss everything but see everything, too. In real time.

Brady was not great today.
Ding Ding Ding

Was that Romo doing that yesterday? I was half asleep. I’m sure it was him, wasn’t it? He would say “Ding Ding Ding” to Nantz about something. All I could think of was an apoplectic mr. furley and the Romo thread. Too funny.

Ding Ding Ding.
Yes. He did it like twice in a 30 second span. I went for a walk instead of listening to that garbage.

Yep. I heard it because the first time he did it, I was thinking, “Did he just say ‘Ding ding ding’ in affirmation of Nantz restating a Romo point Romo had just made?” The second time he did it, I was assured he’d done it just before.

That was kind of cringeworthy, and I defended Romo for a long time. Now he’s just sort of like other obnoxious announcers.

D'oh, you're right, it's Scott Hanson. . . I still call him Andrew but I think Scott Hanson does a very good job.

I like them both and ****ing love the Red Zone channel. Makes watching a game in the traditional way a challenge for me that now I'll usually record the game, ignore the internet for the first half, then start watching it from the start and fast forward through all non-action (and this usually times it up well for me to near the end in live time).

He's okay, but not nearly as great as Siciliano.

Siciliano would dip into the games, and you could listen in during a drive. He would set it up, and then STOP TALKING.

Guy Smiley on the other hand, is shouting at you for 7 hours. He doesn't shut the EFF up, and will talk over plays as they are happening, telling you what you just saw, and then do that 'pause after every word' routine waaay too much if there is a big play (THAT. WAS A. SEVENTY. FIVE. YARD. TD). He jumped in to games twice yesterday, as an official was about to give a call, and we couldn't hear the call, because he was telling us the official's name, then he had to continue to talk as he relayed the call to us, which we would have heard if he wasn't telling us the Clete Blakeman was working this game.

The whole Witching Hour thing is cringy, and stop telling me that we are commercial free, when I am bombarded by Draft Kings ads by YOU, Scott Hanson.

People love Scott Hanson, because he is presenting the best TV product that has ever existed, but he DOES. NOT. SHUT. THE HECK. UP.

Meanwhile at the Greg Olsen household: link
Love Olsen, mainly as a Panthers fan, but he’s got that normal guy charisma that you’d like to watch a game with and have a beer. Brady just seems so forced to try and be that normal guy. He seems like a guy you wouldn’t want to watch a game with unless you did it knowing he was the goat.

Side note, Greg and family frequented our local pizza place which was awesome during the 15-1 season because he was there for every home game Friday night. I held the door open one time and he did that awkward hurry up while saying thanks and almost slipped going in and the at the time undefeated season flashed through my mind watching thinking I’d be the guy who’s house people would come to with pitchforks. Sucked not seeing him a lot when he moved uptown for good reasons (his son had heart issues and Levine hospital is downtown).

My favorite parts of redzone are the times Hanson is taking a break and all you hear are the game announcers. I don't need a giant hyperactive chipmunk to tell me what I can already see and hear.

Good ole Third Leg Greg

Is it me or did Red Zone used to do a better job of muting the games when Hanson was talking, and then switching to the game announcers for live plays? Sunday his commentary and the game coverage was on simultaneously--sometimes two games at a time and him talking. It was really annoying.

Not just you. My 11-year old son even noticed and he rarely watches Sunday football with me.

It's been 7 months since we had NFL football, I think I'm just so happy to have football back that it was very easy to overlook. Maybe I'll be annoyed in a few weeks?

My new favorite show is The Weekly Slate on NFLN. Chris Rose hosts but stays out of the way of the highlight reels, good for those who missed watching football on Sunday. Usually on at 5pm Eastern.

The whole Witching Hour thing is cringy,
how dare you
I've got 7 hours of commercial free disagreement with MassRaider there.
Everyone knows Scott Hanson isn't responsible for the existence of Red Zone, yes? People know this don't they?
I always thought the DirecTV version was much worse but cannot remember why I had that impression as I haven't had it for 8 years or so.

Nah, Siciliano's version was oodles better than the one tied to NFLN with Hanson. Still better than flipping around channels if you have ST, and far better than watching whatever the networks have.

I feel like my beef was that it was a bit further behind the action to encourage you to watch the ST streams. Stuck more on drives instead of whipping around to the action. NFLN does a much better job of being present and, on the YT package, is often ahead of the individual feeds.

None of Hanson's shtick annoys me although I can understand how some think it is more wooden or corporate than Siciliano. The latter seemed better on the "Goldzone" coverage.

Not sure. I'm just glad I can watch the Hanson Redzone that feeds my dopamine addled brain while still having several games on other screens to observe. Can always dial the main screen into Kevin Harlan calling a great moment as needed.

i still can’t believe brady makes $37.5mm per year. i say this every year, i watch the game, not because tom brady is coloring the game. how networks justify this payout shukes me repeatedly.
Part of that is paying him to go to up fronts and mingle/schmooz advertisers. The going rate for a guy like Brady is 30+ a year.

Unfortunately, Greg Olsen isn't considered like that. He's far and away my favorite color guy.

He's grown on me. I like Aikman on the color too. The Harlan/Green and Eagle/Davis booths are probably my favorite ones though

To be fair, I tuned in, in part, to see how Brady did. Of course, that was just a week 1 novelty thing.

But your point is obviously correct. With the exception of very specific people -- think John Madden, Keith Jackson, etc. -- I only care who is calling the game if they are actively bad. Otherwise, it is extremely uncommon for me to even be aware of who the commentators even are from game to game.

Scott Hanson is extra annoying today.. Don't even know half the guys names.. When he breaks in, he just says stuff like the QB with a huge pass to the WR for the home/away team.

Dude got to be the worst person for this job.
