Top 5 Popular Musical Artists/Bands You Don't LIke - Spinoff of top 5 (1 Viewer)

Several mentions of Phish which is fine I suppose if that’s your taste. But I don’t consider them a popular band and also, how do you even hear them unless you seek them out? Rarely on the radio or elsewhere, how much of their catalog could someone even hear unintentionally?

So i really dislike those popular bands that you just can’t get away from in pop culture or on the radio. Not saying they are bad, I’m just done with them:

Bob Marley, Bob Seger, Boston, Foreigner,  and I’ll throw in the Foo Fighters to stir the pot.

They sold out 13 straight shows at MSG and are one of only a very small handful of artists that could pull off a full stadium tour if they so choosed, they are one of the most popular bands out there with largest loyal following of anyone out there today. The OP states to list bands you don't like that most music types seem to like more than you. I listed 5 bands but I certainly haven't dug into any of their catalogs because the stuff that I have heard hasn't giving me any desire to do so but I think it is more than fine to list them. Listen, I'm a big Phish fan and the more I've listened to them the more my appreciation of them has grown but I can say that about almost all the artists I really love. 

And let's be honest here, while Phish is rarely on terrestrial radio they get a ton of airplay on Sirius and if anyone has a friend or acquaintance that is a fan there is almost zero chance that friend/acquaintance hasn't at least at one point (most likely several) tried to jam Phish down that person's throat.

If those are my two options, then the latter.   I never understood the appeal.  Certainly revolutionary at their time, but with the quantity of music available today, I've never had the desire to listen to them.

I only listen to Sigur Ros when I’m going to sleep. It’s very relaxing. Same with Beach House.

I don't really get this sentiment, why do you want to love any band that has bored the heck out of you so far? Like what you like, don't like what you don't like.

Yeah, I get that it's weird. But I have this thing where I respect certain bands and when those bands keep citing and saying a certain band influences them, I want to hear the band that influences them and want to hear them do well. Especially when other fans of a limited genre think the same. So, Sigur Ros, I don't get, but I'm willing to allow that it's me, not them. 

That's where that comes from. It comes from how I discover music and new artists, which is recommendations. liner notes, and word-of-mouth.  

 
1.  Bob Seger.  Just never liked him or any of his songs, save Turn the Page. 

2.  Springsteen.  

3.  INXS

4.  Creed

5.  Grateful Dead.  Tried to listen and be objective.  Don't like the music.  

 
1. Pink Floyd - Never got them or understood the love.  Maybe if I was a pothead in college I would have learned how to appreciate them, but I just don't get the love.

2. U2 - I don't hate them across the board, but I couldn't fill a full CD of the songs I enjoy listening to.

3. Prince - My favorite song of his is the one with the sexual metaphor. :rolleyes:  

4. Garth Brooks - Placeholder for all main stream country acts, but he's the worst.  If I went through the top 100 acts of all time, I can find at least ONE song I would want to listen to if the mood struck me right.  But Garth has zero songs for me.  Nothing redeeming.

5. Kendrick Lamar - Placeholder for all pop music that has come out in the last 10 years (aka, get off my lawn, I'm old).

 
What's the general consensus on the hate for U2? I thought I'd be near alone with them, but they're actually getting a bunch of mentions.

 
Led Zeppelin (Plant sings every song like his balls are in a vice)

Guns N Roses (replace Axl with someone that can sing and I'd probably like them)

AC/DC 

Mariah Carey (has to hit 4 octaves on every song just to show off)

Nirvana

Well said. 

Both a former roommate and my brother are big Phish fans. Both have tried numerous times to get me into the band, but it just ain’t my thing. I will admit to having a soft spot for “Weigh” just because the lyrics crack me up, and I’ve never seen them live.

Interesting.  Sigur Ros is probably my favorite band and they're certainly not for everybody, but I've never heard someone who thought they were boring.  You're not basing this on their first album Von, are you?  That's like their Pablo Honey.  Pretty much everyone ignores it.  Ágætis Byrjun (yeah I copy/pasted that) is where you start with Sigur Ros.

Yeah but that was all the same stoners that didn't realize it was time to leave the stadium and stayed for all 13.

 
I wouldn't say I "hate" any of these bands/artist but the five bands/artists I wouldn't care if I never heard another song again that people seem to like/love (not including current pop music):

Dave Matthews Band

Bob Seger

Creed

Arcade Fire

Coldplay

Maybe they're just played out.  Too much exposure? 

I feel kinda the same way about them, Foo Fighters, and RHCP. 

I liked them all at one point but just got generally tired of hearing them.

Not only that , but to pile on with what RA is saying here -- I have a pretty wide swath of friends and acquaintances that for a long time helped me shape my "musical identity" (for lack of a better, less do0oshy phrase) -- pre internet this was how us old people used to find out about bands.  word of mouth and college radio stations.   When most of those folks like something I don't, I feel like I am missing something.   And sometimes I have originally written bands or songs off after a few casual listens only to find that with the right frame of mind on listening, or with the right setting, the right substances, or the right mood  -- that something I used to dislike has the ability to knocks my socks off.   And isn't that one of the reason why we all listen to music? For those fleeting, rare moments when you hear something new and it makes all the hair on your arms stand straight up?     That's why I "want to like" bands that I don't.   and in several cases, after enough tries -- I give up for good and make it ***official*** that I don't like them despite what my friends tell me (see also:  Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel).  

So anyway, yeah.  It's because I like not wearing socks.  
 

 
i get some of the lukewarmness for the Beatles, even though theyre in my Top 5 - there are an awful, lot of verynotrock songs in their studio masterpieces

This is one of the main reasons why.   File under :  "I'm sure Amway actually has a few good products for sale in there, but JFC I don't want to ever hear about it again"

These are very popular, but not generally considered "great."  I can't stand any of them.  Lame, trite, overexposed, overwrought, pompous. Awful, awful stuff.  I am still disappointed in Tony Soprano for choosing Journey on the jukebox in that final scene.

I've softened on The Smiths and The Cure over the years.  I have friends that share much of my taste--they've always been really into them.  We always argued about them.  I just couldn't stand that depressive narcissism, but now I can acknowledge that they have some good tunes.

Having grown up listening to all of this on the radio non-stop, I have to now agree on all of these. They are all lesser versions of better bands that got much less airplay.

 
People listing artists like the Beatles or Bob Dylan or the Stones are simply mistaken.  There is a subjective element to music, but it's not that subjective.

Born in 83, so I probably just missed them being over played - but I just think they're kinda forgettable.  I don't hear them much.  When I do I usually turn it off.  But if they don't get turned off my ears aren't bleeding.

I appreciate the Beatles and understand their importance to music but am not really a fan.

Dylan may be a great songwriter, but he's a lousy singer.  The Hurricane is great enough to get past it, but the rest?  Blegh.

 
I like U2, but I can see why many don't.  Bono is blowhard-y when most people would prefer to hear the music and not be preached at.  Plus, radio and media tends to play their shetteist songs from the last few albums they've released.  I didn't have a problem with them releasing their album for free a few years ago, but I get where people see this move as arrogant.

That's actually about it to me. Those 2 bands I just change the channel when they come on.

I don't like any of their stuff after Achtung Baby.  Their early stuff like Rattle and Hum and Sunday Bloody Sunday is legitimately good music which is why I can't put them in this thread.

If you don't like the early stuff, I understand the hate.

Dylan is necessary but disgusting. Easily the most important artist i've listened to the least of. Since he almost singlehandedly made it possible for songs to be personal, I rarely speak negatively of him, but i actually don't like very many of those mold-breaking songs, nm his diffident genius crap

adding...I never loved any of those bands, but, over time, I have come to appreciate Journey more - especially their late 70s stuff and am have been listening more to Styx, whom I never respected much before ....foreigner has always been straight forward basic rock...nothing great...nothing terrible ....seen them live...good solid party band....Kansas is a good band...have seen them live and they can really play and Walsh was/is an amazing singer, but some of their music being pretentious is a valid criticism....Bon Jovi just sucks ###...their music is simply indefensible

Problem with these bands is I've probably only ever heard the same few songs played incessantly on classic rock stations.  They may have other good songs but I've never bothered to seek them out. 

For instance, I didn't realize until a few years ago that there was a version of Journey pre-Steve Perry.  I heard this song on a public radio station and thought, this is pretty good.
