Top 50 Sandwiches - Ranked by Scoresman (1 Viewer)

#20 - Tomato Sandwich

Country of origin: USA 🇺🇸

Fresh tomatoes, salt, and mayonnaise on white bread.

Possibly the simplest sandwich on the list. Got into these recently and I make Kenji Lopez-Alt's version. White bread toasted on just one side, fresh beefsteak tomatoes sliced thick, and kewpie or homemade mayo.

I just barfed in my shirt. WTF man?
This one is one of my go-to sandwiches in the summer, but it’s probably too high up the list. This sandwich is 100% dependent on quality, fresh garden tomatoes.

The #20 ranking assumes that quality of tomato. Supermarket tomatoes wouldn't make this list.

#21 - Club

Country of origin: USA 🇺🇸

Triple-decker sandwich made with sliced turkey or chicken, bacon, tomato, and lettuce; usually contains mayonnaise.

I love a good club and order it more often than I should. Always satisfying.

big club fan, back in the day that was my go to hangover food if I got up too late for breakfast

usually a safe sandwich choice too if you’re traveling and unsure of the quality of the place you’re at

My only complaint is sometimes they’re stacked too high and hard to eat

My #9 sandwich FWIW although now I think I may have it a bit too high
Bolded is very true. A common airport food choice for me.

Same here when traveling. I think someone mentioned shareability earlier (maybe jokingly so), but I think a good factor when traveling with the spouse and just want a little something to take the hunger off, as easy to share.

I love these. I usually liven mine up with some green leafy lettuce and bacon. mmmm

That's a completely different sandwich!

Lobster roll update

It was the hot buttered style served in a hot dog bun. It was good but it was also $25

Think I prefer the cold, again, not something I get in Michigan too often. I know there is a local deli that does a Lobster Roll week maybe I will hit that up next year

They also had a fried lobster po boy, I was intrigued but already had lobster roll on the brain
Last summer I was on the east end of Long Island with my family and my sisters family (3 adults, 4 kids). Was craving lobster rolls, and told everyone I was buying lunch that day. They had the cold kind with mayo (not too much) but damn if this thing was small. And $35! Everyone ordered, not everyone got lobster rolls, thank God, but total comes out to like $270.00. For lunch! Whatever, I was on vacation, take out my card, and they are like, sorry sir, cash only. wtf carries cash. Had to borrow $160.0 from my sister :bag: PRobably will not be returning (definitely will not be returning). Was still hungry when we left

Reminds me of this.

Sub fresh ground pepper for the salt and I'm with you.
One of my favorite sandwiches in the world

Both salt and bp for me 😃

#19 - Po-Boy

Country of origin: USA 🇺🇸

Crusty long roll split and filled with cold cuts, roasted beef or fried seafood. The New Orleans analogue to the sub or hoagie.

So many different types. I've had some variations of shrimp, catfish, and sausages.

Big fan, especially the fried seafood variants, but again not too popular in the north. I think the first time I had one was in Shreveport LA

Definitely something im on the lookout for in a coastal setting

I open up sandwiches and discard the tomatoes faster than a gal can say "Hawk Tuah".

Yeah it goes without saying that if you don't like tomatoes, you wont like a tomato sandwich.

But wow, I would be hating life if I didn't like tomatoes on a sandwich.

Im not opposed to tomato or lettuce on a sandwich, but in most cases im passing. It’s not that I don’t like them, but more of the threat of some giant poorly cut lettuce or tomato that just causes everything to slide around and then half your meat is sticking out, then you go to remove it and it takes half of your sauce with it. Im much more willing to go lettuce if it’s shredded

Obviously needed on a [redacted]
usually get on a [redacted]
For a burger I will do it at home if I can cut myself or if I know the place uses shredded lettuce and smaller tomatoes

Because of this thread, I made some amazing egg salad on Tuesday, and had a great Pork Belly Banh Mi today for lunch along with some amazing Pho.

Also, whoever recommended the sandwich documentary on the first page, thanks! Enjoyed it much!

big fan of shrimp po boys.

introduced to them around 90. oldest friend went to loyal new orleans. i went out to visit when in college (and went to a wonderful super bowl: 55-10).
great food discoveries for me on that trip

It's definitely a thing. With amazing tomatoes, it's one of the best. I wouldnt make with supermarket tomatoes.

My grandfather liked these.

#18 - Cubano

Country of origin: Cuba 🇨🇺

Ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and sometimes Genoa salami on Cuban bread, sometimes pressed and warmed in a plancha.

One of only two sandwiches I will eat mustard on. Love a good cubano. Recently got to try the Cubano from the "Chef" truck in Vegas.

#24 - Patty Melt

Country of origin: USA 🇺🇸

Consists of a hamburger patty, pieces of sautéed or grilled onion, and Cheddar or Swiss cheese between two slices of bread.

Two slices of bread instead of a bun and pretty specific toppings distinguish this from the hamburger.
It seems like I would like a patty melt but some reason the ratios are just thrown off when bread is used instead of a bun. I can't explain it but I am always disappointed every time I have ordered a patty melt.

My dad says he loves patty melts and he whenever he gets them when we go out he always is disappointed as well. Says they are good but I have never seen him happy with his selection after ordering one.

I think the concept is solid but the application just never hits.

#34 - Chopped Cheese

Country of origin: USA 🇺🇸

Made on a grill with ground beef, onions, and topped by melted cheese and served with lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments on a hero roll.

Spent a couple days on a sandwich mission one trip to New York and this was a target since I've never seen one outside of NYC. This one is as amazing as it sounds.

My personal favorite atm

Can I add bacon and lettuce?

#50 - Peanut Butter & Jelly

Country of origin: USA 🇺🇸

Peanut butter and jelly or jam on bread

An American classic and probably a favorite if you are 8 years old. Personally, I never liked so much sweet on a sandwich, so my variation as a kid was peanut butter only and it knocks this one to the bottom of my rankings. May not be a popular decision.
Quality peanut butter and a jalapeño or habanero jelly makes for a good sandwich.

I am surprised with all the discussion on the PB&J that nobody has ventured into the creamy vs chunky PB aspect of the sandwich.

I prefer chunky but it’s only a slight preference. Wife hates chunky. So for twenty years I ate creamy. Now we have multiple jars of peanut butter going, including Trader Joe’s cookie butter.

Could be regional factor though. If I wanted a fried oyster po boy right now I’d have no idea where to go

True. I won’t eat one unless I’m near a beach.

Anyone have a favorite version of egg salad for their sandwiches? I'm inspired and now Saturday is BLT night and Monday will be egg salad sandwiches.

Fresh ripe tomatoes with some salt are probably a top 5 food for me. I've never had the desire to put them on plain white bread. Just eat them.
idk man as someone who generally has been anti mayo all life...it goes great with tomatoes either alone or on a BLT, and in egg dishes. So I'm on board with this plain tomato sandwich thing.

I need to see a tomato sandwich eat off. I don’t have the right stuff right now except for mayo

Fixed
i'm good with rye or sourdough.. swiss and/or jack

have you been to Bill's on Clement. that place was a staple growing up

I have dreams of the Herb Caen burger from Bill's. Such a simple burger, but so so good.
I was typically:
patty melt
paul Kantner
jax beaux

... and would get swiss or jack with them

and a big chocalte shake or malt

I’d do both
Of your Moms.
