Yeah I left the Hot Brown off my list for the same reason.Merriam-Webster:
1 sand wich
a: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between
b: one slice of bread covered with food
Don't come at me with Definition #2, either.

Unless a cookie counts as bread.

it needs to be considered on it's own merits as a sandwich.#36 - Fried Chicken
Country of origin: USA
Boneless fried chicken in between two slices of bread/roll
Bread can be anything from a biscuit to a waffle. This sandwich comes in many forms and I like just about all I've tried.
Oh come on, this is a top 5 sandwich and in consideration for #1. Assuming we’re considering all variants (Buffalo, Nashville hot, spicy, etc)
Spoiler : Popeyes spicy chicken will make an appearance in the future Top 50 Fast Food Items
The reason I dont rank it higher is that I almost always choose to eat fried chicken on it's own as opposed to in a sandwich. That's going to hurt the ranking a bit.

Every time I visit Philly, Mrs. Yambag and I head to John's Roast Pork and split one of these and a cheesesteak as both are too good to pass up.#37 - Roast Pork Sandwich
Country of origin: USA
Roast pork sandwiches are a staple of numerous sandwich shops throughout Philadelphia. The bread roll is typically topped with sesame seeds and loaded with a generous spoonful of pork juices. It is then stuffed with either sliced pork roast, roast pork chunks, or pulled pork, along with broccoli rabe (or spinach), and melted cheese such as provolone.
Had this alternative to the cheesesteak at a local philly cheesesteak place. Loved it as an occasional alternative to it's steak sister sandwich.
Patton Oswalt bit on the Double DownOh hayellll no.Double DownName me a sandwich that does not involve bread.
Better than just a PB sandwich is a PB and banana sandwich. One of my favorites as a kid and probably haven't had one in 10 years. Might have to do it soon just because. It is much better than expected......especially when chased with an ice cold glass of milk.so my variation as a kid was peanut butter only and it knocks this one to the bottom of my rankings. May not be a popular decision.
These are at most restaurants in my area of CA. It's pretty much a staple of the lunch menu around here. They vary wildly in quality though and of course most will like their home version better than many of the restaurant versions. Much, much better if sliced fairly thin (but not too thin). If to thick a slice then it verges on the steak sandwich issue with pulling out the whole hunk of meat on the first bite.A good tri-tip sandwich is a better alternative IMO. Generally gets chopped up in thinner, smaller portions. Big fan. Not too many places will offer them, even on the west coast, but when I stumble up one on a menu, it's going in my belly.

X - the 'wafer' as you call it is not bread. It is considered a cookie. There isn't a professional baker on the planet that would say the following ingredients constitute 'bread':X - the wafer is bread.Ice Cream SandwichName me a sandwich that does not involve bread.
#34 - Chopped Cheese
Country of origin: USA
Made on a grill with ground beef, onions, and topped by melted cheese and served with lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments on a hero roll.
Spent a couple days on a sandwich mission one trip to New York and this was a target since I've never seen one outside of NYC. This one is as amazing as it sounds.
Delicious. What's the ruling on the open faced beef sandwich?
I only understand about half the words in this description.Today's lunch: Tartufata Truffle burrata cheese, parmacotto ham, spicy eggplant caponata, truffle porcini cream
It nearly made my list and it is distinguishable from a hamburger and regionally unique.#34 - Chopped Cheese

I saw something about this the other day. Pretty sure we just call them Cheeseburger Subs in Michigan. Need to investigate further if there is some subtle difference
Since I know it as a cheeseburger sub I withheld it from my rankings. If allowed it probably be Top 25 at least
Way too low!#33 - Shawarma
Country of origin: Turkey
Flatbread with meat (traditionally lamb) cooked on a vertical spit. Additional fillings include vegetables such as tomato, cucumbers, onions, and pickles, and a sauce, often yogurt- or tahini-based.
My go to order at most Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurants.
Faced beef is my least favorite beef. What's the ruling on the open faced beef sandwich?
54 or 56 degree? Now I want to buy an open faced sand wedge.
Erroneous!#32 - Lobster Roll
Country of origin: USA
Lobster meat tossed with either mayonnaise ("cold") or drawn butter ("hot") stuffed into a slit opening at the top of a grilled bread roll or hot dog bun.
As much of a mayo fan as I am, the best I've had have been the buttered variety, but both are excellent. Have never tried one outside of Boston area so not sure how well it has "traveled" to other parts of the country.

Doing so well until the Shwarma and Lobsta' Roll rankings.

I wouldn't read too much into the rankings order at the moment. 35 to about 15 are so close together for me.
