Rookie runs

Running back Ryan Torain enjoyed a few more repetitions with the first offense Thursday, and the rookie from Arizona State is well aware of how well young, previously unheralded running backs have fared during Shanahan's tenure with the Broncos.

A fifth-round pick in the April draft, Torain was slowed by nagging injuries during his senior season last year, but he boasts the sort of north-south style Shanahan has always favored.

"Coming out to Denver to play running back is a huge opportunity," Torain said. "They have a good thing going out there with this offense. I just have to stay positive and focused. Have fun with it, and good things will come."

Torrain is so July. The guy to hype for August is Anthony Aldridge:

Have the Broncos Found Their Own Brian Westbrook?

Brian Westbrook. Philadelphia Eagles running back. 5′8″, 200 lbs. 9,512 all-purpose yards in college, an all-time NCAA record. In six years in the NFL, Westbrook has acquired 9,002 all-purpose yards (rushing, receiving, and punt/kickoff returns).

Warrick Dunn. Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back. 5′9″, 180 lbs. 3,959 rushing yards stands as an FSU record, one of many Dunn still holds. In eleven years in the NFL, Dunn has acquired 14,548 all-purpose yards.

Anthony Alrdige. Denver Broncos undrafted rookie running back. 5′9″, 185 lbs. 4,438 all-purpose yards in college, holding the University of Houston record for average yards per play with 9.4. Rushed for 10.1 yards per carry as a junior, leading the nation in that category.

The overall production in college doesn’t quite compare to Westbrook or Dunn, but Anthony “Quick 6″ Alridge’s impressive production in limited work at Houston has earned him quite a buzz. His performance at Denver Broncos training camp has only increased that buzz - Alridge has looked very good in camp, breaking off long runs to the outside and burning defenders on several occasions.

Alridge once was considered an almost-certain practice squadder for the Broncos - with a lot of depth and competition at running back, Alridge’s uphill battle to make the roster seemed too tall a task for a 5′8″ undrafted rookie. Now that camp has gotten underway, it appears the Broncos have a tough decision to make: lock him up with a roster spot, or risk placing him on that practice squad, where any other NFL team can pluck him off.

Alridge’s main detractor has always been his small size, but if he follows the bath of Philly’s Westbrook (special teams work as a punt and kickoff returner for the first few years, before showing his value on offense), Alridge has a real shot to become a star in this league. By all accounts, his work ethic and dedication are second to none, attributes only validated by the work he put during the offseason to gain between 10 and 20 lbs.

And if similar-in-size Westbrook and Dunn can have such productive NFL careers, why couldn’t Alrdige?

I’ll admit Alrdige’s small size has caused me to overlook his potential. But I’ve talked to some people who know him from the University of Houston, and all I keep hearing is how special he is - and how special he could be at the pro level. A dynamic back with good hands and breakaway speed doesn’t come around so often; the Broncos have a tough choice to make when it comes time to fill the last of their 53 roster spots.

Some of the garbage that comes out of Denver is priceless.

The next Brian Westbrook? More like the next frog that'll turn into a prince ... for a week or three.

The article said that Alridge wasn't even a lock to make the 53-man roster. It never said he was the next Westbrook, it simply said that Westbrook has proven that backs his size can succeed in the NFL.

Only Alridge is an inch taller and fifteen pounds lighter. Saying he's the same size as Westbrook is like saying Keyshawn Johnson is the same size as Terrell Owens.

Several years ago Denver was a good place to look for running backs because Shanahan always had a bell cow running back. But the last few years have

convinced me to stay far away from the Denver running backs because he changes them as often as most men change their socks. If one of the Denver

running backs is available in the 12th round, I might take the plunge. Otherwise, I'll pass.

Anyone that thinks Young, Torain, or any other Denver running back will be the main ball carrier is welcome to that player. It is possible to find a bye week

replacement during the season from among the Denver running backs though.

The title of the article is "Have the Broncos Found Their Own Brian Westbrook?" I'd say that's a pretty clear comparison, warranted or not. Poor title IMO, though I guess it forces you to read on...

August 1, 2008, 01:39 Broncos :: RBBroncos RB Torain Getting First-Team RepsPat Rooney, Rocky Mountain News Denver Broncos running back Ryan Torain has been seeing reps with the first-team offense recently in Training Camp. "Coming out to Denver to play running back is a huge opportunity," Torain said. "They have a good thing going out there with this offense. I just have to stay positive and focused. Have fun with it, and good things will come."

None of this should be a shock to anyone following Denver the past few years. Here's the thing: Torain will in all likelihood start at least a few games this year. Just like Mike Bell. Or Rueben Droughns. Or Mike Anderson. Etc.

But will he still be on the roster in 2 years? Probably not.

So if you can get Torain for a reasonable price, you should grab him. Then wait til he starts a few games and the hype builds. Then sell.

Frankly, this is my strategy with every Denver rookie RB from now until Shanahan leaves.

I saw Torain in person today and I'm a believer now.
he had a very good day of camp today. I liked seeing him cut back against the grain and get yardage. He likes to put his head down and plunge through the pile as well.E15 had a FANTASTIC day, including the catch he caught while falling on his back and bobbling it on the way down. :)

Dre Bly is still overrated to me. Guys in the crowd were calling him a shutdown corner and I was stunned. I'm pretty sure I saw him drop 2 passes in a simple drill where a ball is tossed directly to him. When they did the drill where he was supposed to jam a receiver off of the line he flat out got embarassed a few times, particularly by Brandon Marshall. Foxworth showed great technique by comparison.I was 5 feet away from Torain on his swing pass for TD and was stunned at how good he looked. I really thought he looked like the best back out there today. Andre Hall got stopped behind the line a few times but looked pretty fast in spots. I wanted to punch a guy in the throat who sitting next to us when he was trying to explain to everyone that Michael Pittman was a "real monster" compared to Selvin Young and how he was "going to take all of the goalline carries" away because he's 10 pounds heavier. Pittman did nothing to impress me today other than pass blocking. Is E15 a name for Marshall? If so, that guy looked flat out amazing. If he's out for a few games, I can see his absence having a huge effect on Cutler. He seemingly got open on every route and I don't remember seeing him drop a catchable route all game long. If I was forced to guess, my money would be on Darrell Jackson starting against Marshall. I think Stokley looked better today though. Scheffler had a glaring drop today but the guy looks great. Cutler looked like he put a lot of velocity on the ball and had really good location. He had a couple of bad balls over the 2 or so hours but threw a lot of nice passes. Patrick Ramsey looked like a scrub to me and actually reminded me of Bradlee Van Pelt at times. I didn't see much of Hackney but it would appear as though he's just a camp arm anyway.Prater looked great today. I had a bad angle on the placement on the ball when he was kicking FGs on the main field but it looked like his long was 67 and it still had room. He looked really good and had a very strong leg.

Thanks for the write up.I would have to agree with your assessment of Bly being overrated.

one thing about torrain, & it is probably unusual for a rookie RB, lack of hands & ability to help in the passing game will NOT be an obstacle to his seeing increasing work...

in his workout video, he looked like a very natural hands catcher, which bodes well for his future development in the passing game... if he gets a shot (& everbody does at some point in DEN :bag: ), he could run with the opportunity...

The question mark on Torain isnt if he's talented enough, it is if he's healthy enough. IMO, he's easily the most talented back on the roster. He's more talented than Forte who has a big fantasy bandwagon right now. Mike Anderson slid in the draft because he was old. Torain slid because he was hurt but you are really talking about a 2nd round talent. If in Houston you say Green is the guy if he's healthy, that's the way you should approach Torain. If he's healthy he should be the guy and probably will be the guy.

You have to register for this but its free:

On several occasions Selvin Young looked like a more confident running back. He seems to be seeing the field better and he is quick and decisive on his cuts. He is the clear starter at HB in my opinion, and not because of anything the other guys are doing wrong, he has just been that good.

Speaking of Young, he also looks alot more comfortable catching the ball out of the backfield. The team seems to be spending alot of time on this as well and I expect to see that continue into the pre-season.

Broncos Torain Out 6-8 Weeks, Broken Elbow

Reggie Rivers

DENVER (CBS4) ― Broncos rookie running back Ryan Torain is expected to be out 6-8 weeks with a broken bone in his elbow, head coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday morning.

Torain was carted off the field during the team's 9-on-7 run-blocking period at practice earlier in the morning. Shanahan said the broken bone is where the radius meets the elbow.

Torain was knocked off balance while carrying the ball and put his left hand on the ground to regain his balance. He was hit by linebackers Nate Webster and Jamie Winborn.

Torain immediately collapsed on the turf grasping his left arm. Broncos head trainer Steve Antonopolus helped Torain walk to the sideline and tended to him for about 10 minutes before calling a cart to ferry the tailback off the field.

Torain, a 5th-round draft pick out of Arizona State, has been one of the stars of training camp.

Shanahan said Torain had a chance to compete for the starting tailback job and his injury is a big loss despite the fact he's a rookie

Shanahan said he hopes there isn't too much ligament damage to Torain's elbow because that would slow down his recovery.

Looking forward to things returning to normal around here and all the Denver RB threads knocking all the Favre threads off page one

Shame about the rook though
