Tre Mason rushed for 85 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries in the Rams' 28-26, Week 7 win over the Seahawks.

After shining last Monday night on nine snaps, Mason was handed the reins against Seattle, out-touching Benny Cunningham 18-7, while Zac Stacy rode the bench, playing one snap and not registering a touch. It sure looks like a changing of the guard. After picking up 24 yards on his first NFL carry last week, Mason ripped off a 28-yarder Sunday. He found the end zone from six yards out in the first quarter. The Rams are going to ride the "hot hand," and Mason has it. Coach Jeff Fisher likes to ride one back. Mason needs to be owned in all formats.

It's impossible to bench him or make him inactive or anything like that. That ship has sailed as we all know... but that's not the bar, is it?

I guess the bar for many of us for Mason is set at what Stacy did last year. Stacy gave many of us here Top 10 numbers for a long stretch. Can Mason get to 15+ carries consistently or will he fall short due to fumbling, pass catching and pass blocking problems?

He has more burst, but Mason has bigger holes in his game than Stacy did last year and that may hold him back; and they showed up brightly in his first game with 15+ touches.

I'm betting on Mason as much as I possibly can, but there are some major things to sort out here.

I dont get it, did you not see the fumble?

Did you not see Benny get 5 catches and Mason none?

Did you not see him pulled in passing downs?

*If* the bar is set at Stacy production in 2013 (and maybe it is not for you; if not...then God bless you...), then those things need to be sorted out. Im very hopeful he can, but if they remain issues he will fall far, far short of the bar that Stacy set for hi,

He still has not started his first game. Nobody was expecting every catch and carry to go to him.

Good point. That will be one of a few milestones ahead. Let's see that promotion to the first string.

They all look like they are going to be important fantasy players for years to come!

Don't know if that's dynasty but I'd hold mason for now. I've been holding hill and the next time I have to clear a space he's gone. This is redraft though. Mason looks like dynamite and against supposedly good defenses.

Just for perspectives sake (you can find the evidence from June somewhere in this forum)... In this year's rookie draft in our longstanding dynasty league, I was unfortunately void of a 2nd round pick. With the no2 overall, I grabbed Mike Evans, and FULLY expected Mason to be gone by mid/ate 1st... by mid 2nd, he was still there and I did everything in my power to move to the 2.05 spot to nail him.

It cost me a 2015 first round pick.

Thing is, I already consider him a high 1st round pick in my rankings, so I had NO issue giving a first next year to acquire him.

Long story short, Hill is good. I like him. But Gio is better... Mason, imo, has a lock on this run game and should be full steam ahead here-on out. So no, I personally would decline that immediately.

Ive remained bullish on my opinion of Mason.. and wont waiver on it. Haven't hid this since June

I reached on him this year in the draft but his Auburn tape and Marshall Faulk gushing over him before the season started justified it for me. He's looking great the past two weeks aside from the fumble and getting blown up in pass pro the one play vs the 9ers, hopefully he keeps it up. Love that they kept him in at the goal line too.

 
I don't know much about how Mason profiles in the passing game, but I'd be concerned about him getting Ridley'd right out of the gameplan if (when) the Rams fall behind early.

IIRC Stacy remained productive in that scenario a few times last year. Not sure if Mason would too.

Was thinking the same.

The scouting report on him says he has good hands, but was never used much as a receiver at Auburn. Also says he's was good in pass pro in college, but obviously that was college. Until he proves himself at pass pro at this level, I doubt he will be get much on obvious passing downs and his usage could suffer until that happens.

While Mason may not be an established receiver, he did in his Junior (and only full season as starter) year catch 12 balls, at 13.5y/catch and a TD.

I see him as a guy in the mold of Alfred Morris, with better explosion. Can still be highly productive without receiving stats. The luxury Mason has over Morris, is what I consider to be a great o-line, that will only get better at Robinson matures.

 
How comfortable do we feel about Mason as a RB3 against the Chiefs Week 8? My main concerns are the Chiefs defense is better than many think and this will be Mason's first away game and on grass as the lead back.

If we use yesterday as an indicator of the future, he is an RB2, not an RB3... With RB1 upside.

But are we there yet? We dont know for certain, but can assume that yes, he will get the lions share of carries. In the most important part of yesterday's game, he was still used as the lead dog against the league's most feared defense.

Using him as your RB1, is a definite risk... It's been one week as the lead dog, and he passed w flying colours. But to be 100% certain, we would want a bigger sample. I have NO issue using him as an RB2 this week.. In fact, I will be.

Put it this way.... After beating up SF and SEA... if he does the same this week v KC, you can safely say you own an RB1 for the rest of the season, and likely longer if you roll w dynasty

 
I'm very jealous. It was obvious Tre was the best RB last Monday night, and I put in a waiver to get him (he's been on my watch list since day 1, but bid low thinking most in my league would not be too enamored with his stat line and thought I could pick him up cheap. A guy in my league bid like 40% on the guy, which I only had 21% left at the time anyway so I would not have had any hope of landing him, but his life force springs off the TV with superhero qualities. I'm trying to buy but have serious doubts I will get him off a guy who just hit the jackpot. He's the real deal folks.

 
Is there any hope that he plays more of a role in the passing game going forward? Seems like the coaches really like Cunningham as the 3rd down back and Mason loses a lot of the luster in PPR leagues as long as Benny has that on lock.

Thanks. I don't know too much about him. I didn't get him in dynasty, unfortunately, but I was able to snag him in a re-draft. I was just wondering if there was some speed component to his game that might be mitigated by grass as opposed to turf like Reggie Bush, etc.

His involvement in the passing game is a concern should the Rams get down big as they are wont to do.

 
Put it this way....the team should do what they can to make him a part of the passing game. Having the ball in his hands looks like the best thing for this offense.

Tre Mason led Rams running backs by playing on 27-of-51 snaps in Sunday's win over the Seahawks.
Benny Cunningham played 19 snaps and Zac Stacy got one

None are prolific, so noone stands out in that part of the game

Cunningham looked really good in the 3rd down role. I say this as a Mason owner.

If Cunningham keeps playing well in that reduced role, I think he's got 3rd downs on lockdown. Mason's upside (this year) is limited to RB2, I think.

I thought Mason not seeing 3rd down work had less to do with pass catching ability and more to do with pass pro. I don't know, over the past three weeks it seems to me that STL has been happy to lean on Cunningham in certain situations. He performed well when Stacy went down, he's been used on 3rd downs, at the GL, they also leaned on him for that trick play on 4th down yesterday. It's also been translating into double digit fantasy points in PPR over the past three weeks but that's for another thread.

I don't know, in one league I own both Mason and Cunningham and will need to start one due to byes soon. Who to start could be game flow dependent. KC for instance, is favored by a score next week at home. I think the choice is more difficult than I'd like it to be.

 
I picked him up as a potential keep for next year ... looks like he may break into my starting lineup before the year is done. Can't complain and look forward in seeing his development.

 
Cunningham definitely has a role in this offense... I am not saying anything to the contrary.

Stacy, for the moment definitely looks like his days are numbered, and boy... did it happen fast. against SF and SEA he barely sniffed the field for a sure "300 touch guy"

The nest week or 2 will definitely clear any misconceptions, by all parties

It's clear that Mason has surged to the front of the pile here as the most talented natural runner and is a must-add, but there are major concerns -- most notably in the form of game flow. Mason is a zero in the pass game, which we know is a red flag when a team gets behind. See Andre Williams, Alfred Morris and even Marshawn Lynch for evidence of that. The Rams next five games are at KC, at SF, at ARZ, vs. DEN, at SD.

I'll definitely make a move to get him, but I still need to see him hold up in pass pro. Should he get blown up a time or two, he could easily get sent back to the bench for Stacy. Until I see Mason hold up in pass pro and gain the trust of the coaching staff in those circumstances, it would be hard for me to move him any higher than a flex option.

 
I don't get too concerned about a guy not being the 3rd down back. Few players are true 3-down backs. Maybe Forte, Foster, Charles (sometimes).

But I don't play ppr so I guess that's part of it.

 
I was going to make him my first priority, but that schedule is awful. No more than a #3rb for the next several weeks.

People probably would have said the same thing before the game with Seattle. That's why they play the games.

 
hard to fall behind when they run Mason 25-30x/gm, not unlike his use at Auburn..You can run on Sea, Sf, Chargers..suddenly, these supposedly tough run defenses are swiss cheese.

 
Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the team's running back situation will continue to be a "week-to-week thing," adding Zac Stacy's lack of playing time Sunday wasn't an indicator of things to come. Stacy played one snap and got zero carries in the win over the Seahawks.

"We've got three outstanding runners," Fisher said, referring to Stacy, Benny Cunninghamand rookie Tre Mason. "And as I mentioned, we think Trey Watts can also help us, so we're going to use them all. It'll be a week-to-week thing. Zac could get 25 carries this week. We had some things in early this week. It was working so we decided to stay with 'Mase.' It's nothing that Zac has done or hasn't done. He's been a little banged up the last couple of weeks, but obviously he's an outstanding runner as well. We clearly have significant depth there at the position."

Fisher noted Stacy missed practice time the past couple weeks due to calf and ankle injuries.

"The good thing about this is he'll come back and should be 100 percent this week and just see where it goes," Fisher said.
