Trip's Preseason Week 1 Takeaways (1 Viewer)

Here are my condensed thoughts on all 32 teams after watching all of the preseason action thus far.

AZ Cardinals – There is no indication that Ellington’s workload is going to decrease, and he obviously has his speed back. Palmer looked great and continues to be one of the most undervalued players in fantasy. Not a lot of intel on the WR corps other than more hurry up offense can’t be a bad thing.

Atlanta Falcons – Julio is beast. I have him ranked ahead of CJ Anderson and other unproven players that are mysteriously going ahead of him. RB still a mystery on this team.

Baltimore Ravens – I’d be handcuffing Forsett with Taliaferro, who looked pretty good. Not much more to add here.

Buffalo Bills – It’s Tyrod’s world and we’re just living in it? He and Cassel looked surprisingly sufficient and McCoy looked spry. It’s just one preseason game, but there may be more hope here than originally thought. I’m bumping up Watkins (whom has been uncoverable in camp) on the strength of the early QB play. Also, Manuel should be cut…he is terrible.

Carolina Panthers – Not many huge surprises here. Kelvin appears ready to pick up from where he left off.

Chicago Bears – Offense looked flat. This game did nothing to promote enthusiasm for Bears players. We’ll see how week 2 goes.

Cincinnati Bengals – Offense looked very sharp. Eifert looked as good as camp reports have indicated. I see a lot of value in this offense at every fantasy position.

Cleveland Browns – QBs looked pretty sharp. There could be some fantasy value here in the passing game if that continues, I’m just not sure where at. I continue to be unimpressed by Crowell as a fantasy prospect.

Dallas Cowboys – Dallas O Line looked dominant although the reserve runningbacks did not. Door is definitely open for McFadden if he can stay on the field. With most skill position players not playing there wasn’t a lot to see. The backup TE, Escobar, was probably the only real standout.

Denver Broncos – Two players stood out here. First, Montee Ball may be ready to take a step forward after looking pretty good with his limited opportunity. It’s no secret I think CJ Anderson is overvalued in fantasy circles and his lackluster performance in this game did little to alleviate that notion. Second, Cody Latimer looked terrific. He is on a shortlist of WRs that you can snag late, that could have a huge impact if injuries to the starters arise. Virgil Green looked proficient and could be a darkhorse TE if Daniels can’t stay healthy. Also, Osweiler may be a worthwhile handcuff to Manning in deeper leagues.

Detroit Lions – First team looked sharp. Abdullah was the standout player, not sure much more needs to be said about him. My takeaway is that Stafford appears to be a solid QB choice at his current ADP…too many weapons and solid coaching.

Green Bay Packers – Nothing groundbreaking here as the starters looked good as usual. Like Latimer, Janis is a WR to watch for….looks like he could fill in competently if any of the starting WRs go down.

Houston Texans – Blue looked proficient running with the first team. QBs still uninspiring for me, but they weren’t terrible. Shorts big play could put him on the fantasy map in deeper leagues.

Indianapolis Colts – Dorsett will be a star. I will be targeting him late in most deep leagues. He is electric. Great to see Gore not getting any run…they are protecting their asset which is smart.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Bortles looked like he’s ready to make the Sophomore jump that many highly drafted QBs have taken. Denard Robinson also looked like he wasn’t ready to concede anything to the rookie Yeldon. This entire offense may be a bit undervalued, particularly in deeper leagues. Julius Thomas injury is the obvious big news here. Allen Robinson looks to be one of the most underrated WRs this year, particularly if Bortles makes that leap.

Kansas City – No huge takeaways here. I continue to be unconvinced that Smith will throw the ball downfield.

Miami Dolphins – Jarvis Landry and Lamar Miller standout as potential value plays to me after watching this one. Tannenhill and the first teamers looked sharp.

Minnesota Vikings – Like Bortles, Bridgewater looks like he may be ready to take a huge step forward. I still don’t see any high ceiling players at WR/TE but there may be some serviceable options if Bridgewater continues this level of play. I think the game was a positive indicator for AP as well.

New England Patriots – Garoppolo may not be as ready as many had hoped, Gronk and other Pats skill position players will likely see a dip if Brady’s suspension is upheld.

New Orleans Saints – Biggest takeaway for me is that the Saints appear to be getting Josh Hill ready for an impactful role. How big is anybody’s guess, but he will definitely be a part of gameplans.

New York Giants – No big surprises for me here. Cruz not suiting up is a bit of a red flag.

New York Jets – With Fitzpatrick only playing one drive, no huge takeaways here. Ivory looked like himself and is firmly entrenched at RB1.

Oakland Raiders – Another Sophomore QB that looked strong. Amari Cooper got a lot of run and looked as advertised. Latavius Murray looked good, but still seems to lack the instincts that other top RBs possess. Murray is definitely one to watch if Carr and this offense take a step forward.

Philadelphia Eagles – Agholor reminds me of a young T.O., suspect hands but absolutely explosive after the catch. Matthews looked solid too. Barkley outplayed Sanchez who started. Tebow showed spurts of proficiency. With Bradford held out, it’s hard to take too much away from this game aside from the WRs looking great.

Pittsburgh Steelers – No huge fantasy takeaways here other than the rookie Coates had 5 receptions on 11 targets. A sign that a formidable role could be carved out.

St Louis Rams – Kind of more of the same from the Rams. Foles looked okay, not spectacular. Tavon had a nice play, so perhaps they will try to use him more effectively.

San Diego Chargers – Gordon was underwhelming and is fastly rising to overvalued status. It’s just one preseason games, but this performance in addition to negative quotes from the staff have reason to raise the warning flags. To add insult to injury , woodhead vultured a TD and Oliver looked better than Gordon in backup duties.

San Francisco 49ers – Starting offense looked terrible, however backup Jarred Hayne looked great playing with and against second teamers. He’s going to make the team.

Seattle Seahawks – Lockett, the rookie WR looked very good both as a WR and in special teams play. The other item of note is that Michael looked subpar in RB duties.

Tampa Bay Bucs - Winston was inconsistent, but did show flashes as a passer and rusher. Martin looked good but not great. The major theme here could be that expecting consistency out of this offense may be a bit too high of an expectation as Winston learns the pro game…it’s still early though.

Tennessee Titans – Mariota looked strong for a rookie. Sankey, looked terrible and could be challenged by the RB depth, sooner than later. Not too excited about any of the Titans at this point.

Washington Redskins – RGIII looked okay. The injury to Niles is a boost to Jordan Reed if he can ever stay on the field. Overall, I expect the passing offense to be inconsistent at best.

appreciate the comments. would just the obvious warning out there that you're basing your commens in some cases off of just a handful of plays.

Appreciate the work, lots of good stuff.

I'm wondering why you're so down on CJ Anderson though. The guy had the carries in a preseason game without Payton, and had the flu to boot. I just don't see how any meaningful conclusion can be drawn from that. Hillman looked good, Ball looked like he always does, a smaller Brandon Jacobs.

I totally understand the circumstances, this performance just didn't help. I already had CJ ranked lower than most prior to this game.

Ball's performance, brief as it may have been, was a red flag for CJ in my opinion.

They are paying Ball a lot more than CJ.

This is why I tend not to watch preseason football. People draw conclusions that may have no bearing at all on the regular season. The list of hall of famers that did nothing in the preseason but played like hall of famera in the regular season is long. And there have been plenty of guys that looked like studs in the preseason but went back to being backups in the regular season.

They really aren't paying Ball or CJ very much in comparison to most starters.

If you completely disregard preseason datapoints, this is definitely not the thread for you.

Appreciate the thread and overall seems like a decent job of making some observations that could be informative without overreacting to week 1 of pre-season. But the Ball/Anderson stuff is loco.

I havent actually watched that game yet but seriously doubt there is anything on the tape from Ball's 8 carry 26 yard performance that warrants a "red flag" of any sort for Anderson. Curious why you made no mention of Hillman who by all accounts, including Kubiak's, was very impressive.

And the salary difference is so minimal and inconsequential that even mentioning it just further makes it look like grasping at straws to justify your previously held negative opinion on Anderson. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about CJ that others and even you have mentioned in other threads. But none of those reasons have anything to do with Ball's 9 touches in mid August or a miniscule difference in the two salaries.

Who are the 5-10 guys you are most interested in seeing next week?
I look more at offenses than specific players...

Bills

Titans

Bucs

Eagles

Niners

Falcons

Basically offenses with new coordinators/coaches/QBs
Gotcha, I was just wondering if there were any guys that didn't play you were anxious to see or guys you were surprised by (for better or worse) and really wanted to see again.

I just thought Ball looked significantly improved and CJ obviously didn't show well. A very limited sample set, but if I was risking my entire season(first round pick) on a player, I probably didn't like what I saw last night.

It certainly doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies when staring at Anderson's 1.11 ADP in FFPC and other money leagues.(higher in CBS and ESPN rankings)

I think it's a mistake to extrapolate Anderson's second half last year, there are too many risks at his current ADP.

Okay, here's a list in addition to the the offenses I mentioned

Bradford - really looking forward to seeing what he can do in Philly

Jameis - looking to see if he can take a step forward, moreso for Evans/VJax than anything else

Freeman - want to see if there is a viable starting RB in Atlanta

Aghalor/Matthews - it feels like there should be WR value in Philly and it looked like it today

Abudllah - can the hype continue

Eiffert/Cameron/Reed/Hill/Rudolph - looking for sleeper TEs

Andre Johnson/Dorsett - there's value here somewhere

Randle - Huge sleeper, would just like to see him show well to validate

Yeldon - I am down on him, so would like to see if he can produce at this level

Garoppolo - is he going to kill the Pats passing game during Brady's potential suspension

Aghalor/Matthews - are they good enough to make a fantasy impact

Gordon - can he play better

Denver RBs - Can Ball compete for early down snaps?

These are the biggest question marks/curiosities off the top of my head.

Believe me, we all get that you think Anderson is overvalued. He is unproven and there are offensive line issues in Denver. But I have no concerns from 3 carries in week 1 of a pre-season game where Peyton didn't play, Anderson had the flu coming in, and dinged his ankle during the game.

I look forward to seeing this significant improvement that you saw from Ball but am going to go ahead and guess it won't come close to a red flag of any sort. And again, curious why no mention of Hillman.

What I'm interested in seeing is how Denver's O-line looks when the 1s are in the game. If that line plays at a decent level I like Kubiak and Peyton's track record of producing high level FF RBs in PPR with relatively average talent. Anderson was great the 2nd half of last season and is gonna get first crack at being a 3 down RB in a Kubiak/Peyton system. I'll take it and nothing that happened in week 1 of pre-season changes that.

IMO, Hillman will supplant Ball as the #2 fairly quickly this season.

Hillman is a third down back IMHO. If anybody is going to eat into Anderson's touches early it would be Ball.

Don't get me wrong, I understand Anderson is the starter, but I'm wondering how long that leash will be if Anderson struggles/gets dinged up at all or if Ball looks good.

Awesome. Good stuff. I look forward to seeing what you think about these guys in another week.

Ball can't stay off the sidelines long enough to make a difference. Hillman gets to and through holes quicker, and has more explosive playmaking capability.

That makes sense and I agree Hillman is a 3rd down/COP back. I guess I see his skill set as more of a threat to Anderson whose value IMO, heavily relies on him staying on the field for 3 downs. I probably have some bias against Ball b/c I thought he was so dissapointing last year so I do need to watch him objectively. I just took issue with what seems to me like looking really hard to see red flags on Anderson.

I look hard for red flags for any player with an ADP in the first round. It may seem like I'm picking on Anderson because I've identified him as the guy with the most risk in the first round. I really don't have anything against him other than he has an FFPC ADP of 1.11.

You're basically risking your entire season on a guy that's never done it for a full season. I'd much rather draft the proven studs going after him.

You keep saying this. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Yeah, I think I do know what it means...it's not very complex.
No, an end-of-the-first round bust will not destroy your season unless you are a terrible drafter. Look at the guys who busted last year and you'll find that very competitive teams were there at the end of the season even with those defects.

I've never been a Ball "rah rah" guy but I have been pretty lucky at tagging the correct Broncos RB the past several years and, FWIW, I think Ball is the #2 this year. I believe he has improved from previously when I wasn't impressed. Not great and not what people were saying a few seasons ago but I think he is capable of being the main RB if Anderson can't go.

I generally agree. I find myself paying attention mostly for injuries (unfortunately) that CAN cause changes quickly, and just, in general, to see if a team is operating differently (new OC/DC, etc).

But I dont' get caught up in watching a guy come in a look like a god against hodge-podge 3rd stringers playing vanilla defenses. I know it does happen but I know people are much more wrong much often than they ever are finding that Victor Cruz-shaped acorn.

Here are my condensed thoughts on all 32 teams after watching all of the preseason action thus far.

Pittsburgh Steelers – No huge fantasy takeaways here other than the rookie Coates had 5 receptions on 11 targets. A sign that a formidable role could be carved out.
I don't really think it's that at all. I think it's more a sign that the Steelers pulled everyone on offense that will see the field this year after one drive. Coates has flashed from time to time in camp but has also struggled at other times. He's currently running behind Darrius Heyward-Bey as the 5th WR.

I'd be surprised if he saw the field very much this season barring injuries. I believe he was drafted as insurance in case Wheaton doesn't make the Leap that Roethlisberger has been predicting from him for the last two seasons, they can let him walk and replace him with Coates rather than pony up for a second contract for Wheaton.

Understood and agree with that approach. But looking hard for red flags is one thing. Seeing red flags that don't exist is another.

Nice writeup Trip, and I agree with a majority of your observations. Some additional notes:

Bears and Saints should be involved in a lot of high scoring games. Both offenses looked fairly competent and the defenses didn't.

Bronco's oline play is very concerning. Lots of pressure allowed from the pass rush.

The Buccs oline looks like hot garbage.

I wasn't implying he would start just found it interesting they used him so heavily...felt purposeful. Thanks EG.

I expect the Saints offense will be business as usual but I didn't think the Bears looked so hot.

Agree on the Bucs and Broncos O-line

You found it interesting they used their 3rd round, 5th string WR so much in the 1st pre-season game where the starters play little more than a series? That seems purposeful?

correct, 11 targets isn't an accident.

Don't want to make a mountain out of a mole hill and sidetrack the thread...nobody is drafting Coates in redrafts, and I'm certainly not suggesting anybody should. And I would obviously defer to the Steelers homers regarding where Coates stands in the depth chart.

Chicago Bears – Offense looked flat. This game did nothing to promote enthusiasm for Bears players. We’ll see how week 2 goes.
It's a new system. The Giants offense looked horrible in pre-season last year and we know how that turned out.

Dallas Cowboys – Dallas O Line looked dominant although the reserve runningbacks did not. Door is definitely open for McFadden if he can stay on the field. With most skill position players not playing there wasn’t a lot to see. The backup TE, Escobar, was probably the only real standout.
Yep. The door is wide open for MacFadden to step right ahead of Seastrunk and Gus Johnson.

Pittsburgh Steelers – No huge fantasy takeaways here other than the rookie Coates had 5 receptions on 11 targets. A sign that a formidable role could be carved out.
I think some people were interested to see Bryant catch a 44 yard strike for a TD on the 6th play of the game. That probably did a little to rekindle the hype train after his brief absence.

Seattle Seahawks – Lockett, the rookie WR looked very good both as a WR and in special teams play. The other item of note is that Michael looked subpar in RB duties.
I saw the special teams plays but what about Lockett's 0 target performance as a WR looked good?

Bears - totally agree it usually takes time, but I do think a slow start could be reason for caution from a fantasy perspective

Steelers - Agree it's a positive sign for Bryant owners

Seattle - I should've worded that differently...his athleticism bodes well for him as a WR, but he obviously didn't show much while lining up as a WR.

I wasn't implying he would start just found it interesting they used him so heavily...felt purposeful. Thanks EG.
No problem man, great post, really enjoyed reading it. I think you'll see Coates less and less as the pre-season rolls on. He, Goodwin, Phillips, Murphy, etc.. are getting a lot of snaps right now because they're basically deciding who stays on the 53 and who goes to the practice squad. Fairly certain Coates will make the 53 just based on talent and draft position and he may even eclipse Heyward-Bey as the #4, but he has one problem. Bryant was in a similar situation last year as Coates is now, but Bryant didn't have Martavis Bryant to pass in order to make an impact on the offense. Coates does. :)

appreciate the comments. would just the obvious warning out there that you're basing your commens in some cases off of just a handful of plays.

You obviously did not see the Texans game. Blue was not proficient as a starting RB. He had a couple of good runs but most of the time gets next to nothing. Texans had 7 runs to get the ball in from the 1 yd line. None of the three RBs were able to score. All 3 of the quarterback played great, So far ahead of where they were last year, Best group of wide receivers the Texans have had since inception. Found some defensive depth in the 2nd and 3rd stringers. Defensively should be a top 5 team at worst. Also may have finally found a return man in Chandler Worthy.

Your welcome.

Watched the Texans game twice actually. Thanks for your opinion.

I appreciate the effort you put into the thread, but this admission just voided the usefulness of it all for me. No one with at least one functional eyeball has watched Blue and used the word proficient. Even the ever hopeful local radio hosts couldn't find anything good to say about Blue.

Do you think Polk has a chance to pass Blue up on the depth chart? They played in two different offenses last season so it's not necessarily a fair comparison, but Polk looked like the better back to me.

Actually, Matthew Berry said pretty much the exact same thing in his podcast today....so are you just making stuff up now?

From the looks of the game, Polk is 4th on the depth chart but I chalk that up to missing a lot of time with the hammy and being behind in learning what is a pretty complex offense. He wasn't exactly running against the 1's but I thought he looked like the better back especially in the passing game. Blue will never be close to what Polk already is as a receiver.

Blue's big runs were thru gaping holes. I saw Polk breaking tackles and pushing the pile.

Chris Polk was not one of the three that couldn't score which is something he actually excels at. This had me smiling.
