Vikings: Williamson Corrects Vision

Full Article

After undergoing a battery of vision testing at Nike headquarters last week, Vikings receiver Troy Williamson learned about some non-surgical procedures that could improve his ability to see and catch the ball.

Williamson, coach Brad Childress, Vikings trainers and an eye specialist at the Nike world headquarters developed a program, and the receiver headed to Beaverton, Ore., to take the tests over several days last week, agent David Canter said.

What they found was, well, eye-opening.

Williamson dropped the ball after a promising start to a 2006 season that he and the club hoped would justify his selection as the seventh pick in the NFL draft the previous year. Although he rallied toward the end of the season, Williamson finished last season tied for third in the NFL with 11 drops, according to STATS, Inc.

"It's been frustrating for Troy, and his family," Canter said Tuesday night. "Now that we know there was something from a visual standpoint, this is like a light bulb coming on for all of us concerned about why he was having difficulty making some catches."

Among the things Nike tested: Williamson's hand-eye coordination, whether one eye was stronger than the other, how well he saw things in different lighting, and how he tracked balls coming at him from a variety of angles.

"Troy said it was very helpful, and he was really excited," Canter said. "But he was surprised, at the same time."

Canter said he initially expressed a concern to the club early in the season. Then, early in the offseason, the Vikings approached Canter about delving into the issue more.

"The Vikings went above and beyond the call of duty," Canter said. "This shows how supportive the team is of Troy. This is not the normal eye doctor you would deal with. This is all encompassing. … It's tremendous they were willing to do all this."

That Nike endorses Williamson also helped, Canter said.

Williamson could not be reached for comment.

 they are going after the problem - whether it will be fixed or not is yet to be seen, but at least they are being smart about it.

as he tries to win back a starting gig in 2007.
So who's ahead of him right now other than the immortal Travis Taylor? McMullen? IIRC, Marcus Robinson was cut towards the end of the season.
Travis Taylor is an UFA and hasn't signed anywhere - surprising to me since I think he is a solid WR option (much better than Kelley Washington or others that have signed recently) - and I don't think the Vikings are making a big attempt to sign him. As of right now Williamson, McMullen, and Wade are the only veterans on the roster.Williamson can get open - on all kinds of routes, so I really like his potential if he gets his drops figured out!On a side note, I was watching NFL follies on NFL Network last night with my 8 year old son, and some guy (it was old time stuff) dropped the ball and my son said "Was that Troy Williamson?" I double over in laughter - even the young notice this stuff!!

Good point - I forgot that Taylor is an UFA. I'm also surprised he hasn't gotten any nibbles from teams. While he has clearly fallen short of his 1st round draft status, he's a decent secondary option for any number of teams.

Can you picture if Russell falls to the Vikes and they take him? I think Williams stock will go up. Russell can just throw it very very far and Williamson can use those legs of his to get under it. Hopefully he figures out how to catch the ball. But I think a strong armed QB really helps his stock.

They already have a strong armed QB, so I dont see his stock changing based on that alone. Tarvaris is no Russell (Then again, who is?), but his arm strength can hang with just about anyone else in the league.

Wish we had gotten more information on what the actual problem is with his eyes. As a dynasty owner I sure would hate to see him turn into another Peerless Price (degenerative eye condition.)

Troy Williamson is so bad, that when he drops the ball the opposing team fans boo him. I know, I was there. Remember that game where the Viking's WRs were finally going to breakout against the Niner's. Anyone start Williamson at WR#3 that week? Yeah, he dropped about 100 yards worth of passes. Closed his hands on air on a couple of those.

Honestly, the guy is disgrace for a 1st round pick. He gives WRs a bad name. I would be embarassed to line up across from him if I was on his team. I feel sorry for the players behind him on the depth chart. That right there will shatter your confidence for the rest of your life, seeing someone so pathetic getting on the field before you do. The guy is so bad he could play the WR who catches the ball with his helmet in a movie.

He's only been in the league 2 years, which is too few to make him a bust. Their have been plenty of wr's who had successful and even hall of fame careers, that Williamson has equaled or topped in stats his first 2 seasons. He could turn it around as others have done.
