Turns out the Patriots also "form a wall"... (1 Viewer)

Devil's Advocate

Last month, the NFL fined the Jets $100,000 for forming a wall on a punt return, which resulted in the tripping of Dolphins gunner Nolan Carroll by Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi. Jets special-teams coordinator Mike Westhoff declared in the wake of the controversy that the Patriots do the same thing.

Now, Jay Glazer of FOX has gotten his hands on evidence to support that assertion.

Moments ago, Glazer showed video of a loose alignment of Patriots players along the white stripe during a Jets punt in the teams’ Week Two game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Though they weren’t standing shoulder to shoulder and toe to toe like Sal Alosi and his North Jersey mob, six or seven Pats were up on the edge of the sideline, and one of them appears to try to trip the gunner.

Glazer said that the Jets became aware of the maneuver after signing a Patriots practice-squad player, who blew the whistle on his former team.

As Glazer points out, the Jets may have been able to reduce their own fine — and possibly to get the Pats in line for a fine — if they had known about this sooner. Whether the league takes action remains to be seen.

The Jets...what a bunch of crybabies.KY
:jawdrop: you'd think they could at least man up and raise their hand on this, but I guess not.
Until the Jets beat the Patriots, there is no rivalry. The Pats win and the Jets whine.
Sooo, it has been a rivalry since early this season when the Jets beat the Pats? Or maybe last season when they split 1-1 as well? The series is 2-2 over the past 2 seasons...not exactly one-sided...

Aside from the attempted trip, which is obviously wrong, I don't understand why lining up within the sideline players' area is wrong, illegal or poor sportsmanship. As long as none of the "wall" is outside the boundaries set by the league for sideline personnel then it seems like a legitimate tactic. If the NFL doesn't like it, move the boundary, but otherwise it seems silly to get upset about teams doing this.

Okay except for that interception of Brady, we all know that the Pats win in the Play-offs. Let go Jets(I love me some feet).

I still don't understand why this wasn't the Jets' position on the issue from the very start. :banned:

Thanks for taking time away from your career as a rocket scientist to grace this conversation with your masterful insight. I watched the video, listened to Glazer and have read the posts in this thread and am still unclear as to when the Jets claimed that they weren't guilty. Interesting bit of logic to be applied to your rock solid argument. IF the Jets raise their hand and accept that they are guilty (which I think they have), then this suggests that the formation of the wall and tripping or attempted tripping of an opposing player is an infraction deserving of punishment (the NFL agrees and did indeed punish the Jets). This being the case, then evidence that any other team is involved in the same type of behavior suggests that it is still an infraction and therefore punishable. I would expect the NFL to punish all those teams who have been involved in this type of activity and that would include the Patriots. Heck, you said the Jets were guilty and needed to take responsibility and I would expect a franchise like the Patriots to do the same...right?

Don't confuse him with logic.

do I need an internet restraining order?I don't want to end up hobbled out in the woods.

Nah, we'll use a sack of oranges so there won't be any marks...

I couldn't see anything on that video... but explain to me how the Jets fine could have been reduced. Does the league have a quota for collected fines?

How do u attempt to trip someone? You either do or don't, not like its difficult to accomplish.
It's similar to trying to tackle someone, or trying to catch a pass, or an infinite number of other examples.

similar to the last wall/tripping conspiracy, i dont care. nor should anyone else. another story thats going to get way too much ink

Part (or all, I can't remember) of the fine against the Jets was for publicly stating that the Patriots do the same thing rather than just sending the evidence to the league.

Funny how when some other team does it it's a HUGE deal. But when the Patriots do it everyone should quit crying. Here are a couple quotes from Pats fans from the thread about the Jets coach tripping:

They cheated. This ranks up there with video taping others teams. Unacceptable
:blackdot: can always count on the jets for something like this, just like you can always count on their fans to cry about other teams.always classy, jets.looks like this habitual year end trainwreck is well deserved.
Disgusting. Classless and pathetic. This joke of a coach should be fired immediately and fined severely. The Jets as a team should be fined and I hope they miss the playoffs. I actually like Rex Ryan but I am not a fan of his team and this only solidifies that dislike.
Amazing how many people here believe that he should be fired for a split second mistake, that is is admitting to and atoning for. I could see a fine, maybe even a small suspension, but a lot if people living in glass houses around here. I mean the guy prolly has a family and it's 2 weeks before christmas. You people are so hyperbolic about everything.
maybe he shouldn't be tripping people 2 weeks before xmas.can't the jets just fire him then apologize for doing it?if you think this was some spur of the moment thing you are bs'ing yourself ---- what you saw is who that guy really is, and what the culture of that organization is.there are people who would do that and people who wouldn't.
There are many other posts just like these but I got tired of reading them. Now I'm sure it will be my fault for the double standard.

If the Jets had proof they would have sent it. I wish that Glazer had stopped the video and blown it up to clearly show (if) the player in question had stuck his leg out. The quality of that video was really poor. It is very difficult to tell from those picture in that the players right leg obscured his left leg. Clearly he moves forward then back but it is difficult to tell if he raised his leg. In the time frame the player moved by it would have been difficult for said player to lift his leg (to any degree) given the motion his body was in. Clearly he stepped toward the player in an effort to impede him but I don't see where he lifted his leg.

Further, I think it is a stretch to call that a wall in the sense that the Jets COACHES were lined up along the side line practically shoulder to shoulder.

No story here Jay; if there had been the Jets would have produced it to the League. They did it in the past; clearly they would have done it again.

Sean Crable is the LB Glazer is referring to.

havent most teams formed the wall ?
:lmao:

I heard an interview with Steve Tasker who called this stuff the biggest bunch of BS and that he used to run out of bounds all the time and get hit and tripped.....

This isn't stealing signs or illegal taping or somebody sabotaging something. It was just a guy, reacting."

Tasker said he made a living out of running out of bounds as a gunner, using the sideline to escape blockers. One time, in a game against the Jets, he was so far out of bounds that he ran through the bench area to break free. Another time, he said he was tripped by former Giants punter Sean Landeta while running on the boundary.

"You think this is the first time [a trip] ever happened? Come on," Tasker said. "Guys were always giving me extra shoves. You don't want to see someone get hurt, but it's not a big deal. Why wouldn't you give a guy a forearm shiver? Everyone on the sideline is part of a team and they all want to win. Shoot, even the doctors are competitive.

"If [the Jets] are coached to do that, so what? Call a penalty on them. If a gunner is going to use the sideline as a weapon, like I did, why wouldn't you want to form a roadblock? There's nothing wrong with that as long as it's within the rules."
