Everyone needs to calm down. Seriously. It's been what a week? My god. Relax
That's kind of the point though. Instead of a careful roll out, Twitter laid off a significant portion of their workforce and then instituted changes with seemingly little thought to the consequences. Charging a fee for a verified account is not inherently wrong, the execution was rushed.Everyone needs to calm down. Seriously. It's been what a week? My god. Relax
But have you examined the evidence so far?He said bankruptcy is a possibility. It doesn't help when one of the people acting like the app will go dark is the owner of the company.R-E-L-A-X
Musk is doing exactly what he did with Tesla and exactly what he said he was going to do, experiment with changes to find what works and what doesn't.
It's been like 2 weeks since he took over and some people are acting like the app will go dark in a matter of days and their HQ will be boarded up and sold at auction.
I know we are getting really good at overreactions in 'Merica, but this is reaching comical levels.
Most likely to motivate and justify some of the extreme moves he is making.
Real bankruptcy is a long process.
But I'm mostly talking about the chicken littles and Musk haters acting like it's already the end. I trust the richest man in the world to figure it before I trust a bunch of armchair QBs who never accomplished 1/1000th what Musk has already in his life.
I heard 400k floated. Don't know if that's accurate, though.Does anyone know how many verified users Twitter had prior to the sale?
This story has a little of everything. Will definitely make a good series on Showtime.Everyone needs to calm down. Seriously. It's been what a week? My god. Relax
423k according to this: https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-technology-business-d9d168951c98192ef90851085f343332Does anyone know how many verified users Twitter had prior to the sale?
Oh, you're 100% right. I didn't know that FTX even existed until a couple of days ago, and now I'm fascinated by it.The bad news is that my TL now seems to be 100% devoted to some crypto scam that imploded upon itself. I didn't realize I had this many "crypto people" in my TL.
Its a pretty spectacular story. Hoping for a Michael Lewis book/movie in 4 years.
I've always thought it was cool that our very own @Raider Nation is a verified user.Does anyone know how many verified users Twitter had prior to the sale?

I recommend people read this before dismissing the criticism of Musk. Direct comments from employees here.
Well, to be fair, I consider cleaning up Twitter - if not outright shutting it down - advancing humankind. The worst Musk can do is make it better for everyone instead of being the one-sided moderation flophouse it was prior to him getting it. When you're on the ground floor there is only one way to go - up.Musk would be better off, but he is doing this out of principle. This was not a business decision. I support Musk's vision and agree with the problems he saw.How did Musk become the richest man in the world? He was just an average dude who had nothing but $40,000 of college loan debt. He started a business, flipped that and rolled everything he had I to a second business. He flipped that and put everything he had into a third and fourth business. He was on the verge of bankruptcy 4 years ago. He locked himself in the factory and did not leave until he fixed his problems. The man is intelligent, has incredible vision, is highly driven, and knows how to gets things done and be insanely successful. It is not like he struck oil. The man is a totally self-made $180 billionaire. I don't think after a few weeks anything is clear about Twitter and its future. It's weird to see people assume that the richest man in the world is also a massive genius, without also acknowledging that someone with that much money might not actually care about the havoc he creates, because the worst-case scenario for him is that he might drop to the second-richest person in the world, whereas the worst-case scenarios for others is much, much more serious.
I think it's pretty clear that the Twitter takeover has been handled about as bad as possible, and that Elon Musk is primarily to blame for that. Why are people so invested in defending him?
So many people fail to reach their potential because they get mired into social media. I wish Musk would abandon Twitter and focus his energies back on being hugely innovate in ways that advance mankind. I can't think of anyone today who has been more impactful in that regard and feel it's a damn shame that he is wasting a second of his time on a freaking social media company.
For me, it's not about what is or is not a good business decision. The projects that Musk is involved in are literally advancing humankind. Twitter is a complete waste of his energy and intellect. It's like if mid-career, Thomas Edison decided he wanted to focus all his energies on perfecting the Offdee scale.
NoI'm not on Twitter. Was there a monetization component in place for users prior to the takeover? Put another way, did Twitter previously have possession of credit card information for its users? Or has all that data been collected for the first time as people enroll in Twitter blue?

Twitter blue has existed before but I think only few users used it.NoI'm not on Twitter. Was there a monetization component in place for users prior to the takeover? No
Yes
Someone way funnier than me has gotta run with this.Twitter is a complete waste of his energy and intellect. It's like if mid-career, Thomas Edison decided he wanted to focus all his energies on perfecting the Offdee scale.
Isn't this basically what Ben Franklin did in France?Someone way funnier than me has gotta run with this.Twitter is a complete waste of his energy and intellect. It's like if mid-career, Thomas Edison decided he wanted to focus all his energies on perfecting the Offdee scale.
At least some of health care did. That Pharma company's stock just lost billions in value today. I don't follow the market so I am not sure if health care got crushed today but I am sure many companies will draw a connection here.
This sounds odd.https://www.theverge.com/2022/11/10/23451198/twitter-ftc-elon-musk-lawyer-changes-fine-warning
I recommend people read this before dismissing the criticism of Musk. Direct comments from employees here.
Musk’s new legal department is now asking engineers to “self-certify” compliance with FTC rules and other privacy laws, according to the lawyer’s note and another employee familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity to speak without the company’s permission.
Twitter has suspended sign-ups for its Blue subscription service after the initial rollout was marred by users who received a paid verification badge and then impersonated celebrities, politicians and brands.
Twitter users first began noticing the change late Thursday night when the Blue subscription option was no longer in the sidebar menu of the app. The sign-up page for Twitter Blue appears to still direct to a page with information about the service but without an option to sign up.
It was not immediately clear if or when the service would be restored.
The pullback of Twitter Blue verified also comes as the company’s new leadership is considering how to comply with oversight from the Federal Trade Commission, according to company-wide emails sent to employees on Thursday night, obtained by CNBC. Twitter is currently under a consent decree from the FTC, which forces it to notify the agency about new products with a written plan, among other things.
So Elon is like Thanos in a way? Hurt the world now for a better world later. It would be interesting if his end game is to destroy Twitter as a way to destroy social media in its current form.
If we hold out a few more days he might make it free.
Twitter being a waste of time is belittling just how important and influential social media has become. In 2016 it was credited by one side of turning the presidential election by Russian bots. In 2020 it was credit by also by turning the election through the suppression of a real news story with perhaps collusion from US government agencies. Whether social media platforms are healthy is a debate. But to suggest controlling how information is disseminated is an unimportant waste of time is wrong. There is a reason it is being discussed here and why so many people are passionate about it. It is how most people stay informed.Well, to be fair, I consider cleaning up Twitter - if not outright shutting it down - advancing humankind. I don’t get your “schtick” in this thread.Everyone needs to calm down. Seriously. It's been what a week? My god. Relax
Who is “freaking out”? People are discussing something in the news.
I guess disingenuous trolls like this is why the Political Forum had to go away and some people just miss it so much they can’t let go?
Seriously, enough with the "people who don't act like me are trolls". His point was that everyone IS making this a big deal and he's only had the company for 1 week. The amount of glee and self-serving shots at Musk are unwarranted and are only done because now one side had the moderation gerrymandered in their favor for so long that they thought THAT is what actual moderation was.
I actually agree with you for the most part but maybe Musk can advance human civilization by fixing Twitter too. Maybe set the example to show how it's done, pass it off to his executives and head back to Space-X and Tesla.I don’t get your “schtick” in this thread.Everyone needs to calm down. Seriously. I can’t speak for others but I’m a huge Elon Musk fan. Not necessarily of his personality or character, but as an innovator I think his genius and drive is unparalleled. The advancements he has achieved already with SpaceX are mind boggling. Driving energy solutions with electric and solar, worldwide connectivity with Starlink, getting us to Mars, even ideas like the hyperloop and his involvement with Neuralink. And the many ideas and projects he has yet to come up with. Frankly, I can’t think of anyone alive today who will have achieved more for the human race in terms of innovation and advancement. So whatever he has in mind for Twitter I hope he either achieves or abandons it in short order so he can get back to making an impact on human history. Because fixing Twitter is a distraction.
That's not possible now - social media is now a drug. The drug of acceptance. When people can now find people just like them with the exact sensibilities that can agree with all the things they are thinking it makes it impossible to put down.I would rather we just shut down all SM, TBH. It's ultimately a cancer but if anyone can fix it, it's Musk, IMO.
If this is a fixed twitter we should just blow it all upI actually agree with you for the most part but maybe Musk can advance human civilization by fixing Twitter too.
People are “laughing” at some of the things that are funny. I really find it sad that every topic has certain people that need to make it “political” and whining about how one side gets favorable treatment - ironically both sides think the same thing, which means the bias they perceive is more on them then the reality. I hate both parties fairly equally so I feel I can be unbiased (but obviously I have some bias, everyone does). To me, it's the amount of glee

That guy Super Mike tried to claim that Zuckerberg is treated differently than musk because people like him and hate Musk. From my non-politically slanted observations I think they’re both equally “hated”. When smart people (attorneys who know the law) pointed out why he was incorrect he acted liked he couldn’t understand what they were saying. That’s why I call it disingenuous trolling. It’s hard to believe he couldn’t follow what they were saying - it seemed more that he had his agenda and “facts be damned.”
I haven’t seen one person in here “freaking out” but he does. I guess I’ll call that “trolling” because the alternative would be a much harsher evaluation of that person’s comprehension skills.
Yes, you misunderstood. The Zuckerberg/Musk was just another example of what I perceive as a disingenuous stance by him.Thank you for the robust reply. However, I was specifically talking about Twitter and the "freaking out response" which appeared to be about Twitter, not Facebook or Zuckerberg. People certainly are freaking out about Musk's takeover. Like I said, maybe not necessarily in here but it's happening.
Maybe that's just another reason to shut down all SM anyways.![]()
This is pretty close to where I am too. I wouldn't use the word "fan" because I doubt I would want to spend a lot of time around Elon Musk or work with him -- we're wired way too differently and I don't think I could ever get used to that type of person. But the existence of somebody like Musk makes me appreciate human diversity. Civilizations need a certain number of people like him, builders who are indifferent toward risk. (Henry Ford is a good analogy here IMO, and I would include Bezos in this company as well even if Amazon isn't quite the same as what Tesla/SpaceX are trying to do).I don’t get your “schtick” in this thread.Everyone needs to calm down. Many people only have one lensI'm not even sure how this became about politics.....my political views have zero to do with how a online company operates
The ratio of nonpolitical to political posts is still fine. If that changes then maybe the mods will do something. Many people only have one lensI'm not even sure how this became about politics.....my political views have zero to do with how a online company operates
Kinda surprised this thread hasn't been shut down yet.
A couple glaring differences I see are Elon‘s take over of Twitter was very dramatic and played out for all of us to see. Now in his first couple weeks he’s having some “New Coke” level of fiascos so it’s getting all this coverage.Thank you for the robust reply. Agreed. Wishful thinking for sure, but I hold out hopeSM isn’t going away in a non-authoritarian society.
