Two questions: Adrian Wilson & Brandon McGowan (1 Viewer)

On The Rocks

Footballguy
First Adrian Wilson. I had him last year and before he was injured he wasn't putting up the stats he had been putting up the previous two or three seasons. It was believed to be that the defensive system was the reason...at least that is what I was led to believe. Then he got hurt and checked out for the rest of the year.

Is everyone on board that he is as close to a sure thing at DB as we can get? If there are any naysayers out there I would be curious what you think. I am trying to be convinced not to take him if he is available.

Second: Brandon McGown. A couple of weeks ago, he was atop the preseason rankings on FBG....now he has dropped out of site and is bumped down on the depth chart. Can someone give me some insight on this guy? I saw him a couple of times in preseaon in between the games he was injured and he looked pretty good to me. Did he lose the starting job long term?

TIA

Lots of discussion in this thread about the Chicago safety situation. Additional discussion in both Audible episodes from last night posted a couple of threads down. General feeling is that Payne is more of a classic SS, though that may not be what's needed in the Bear defensive scheme, and that Payne has been a favorite of the coaching staff, though maybe not the better player. If you can sit on McGowan for a couple of weeks, it may prove worthwhile. Payne has yet to show he had the upside McGowan did.

Wilson looks fully healthy and a fully healthy Wilson is a big IDP threat. I don't think the scheme is a huge issue, though there are two solid linebackers in front of him on base defensive downs rather than just one.

Last year, Adrian Wilson played against the Lions right before missing the rest of the year and that week, Arizona had adjusted the defense and Wilson was playing much closer to the line. He blitzed at least twice if I recall correctly and almost sacked Kitna. It did not show anything in the box score, but I was very encouraged by that.

well, we should see in week 1 --- funny how that lions game is cited and here the are playing martz again.

Well, two weeks in the books and Adrian Wilson has been a huge disappointment (especially in tackle heavy leagues) Haven't caught either one of the games so far and I would love to get any insight from those that might have. Change in scheme, play by the LBs,...?

Adrian Wilson's numbers are predicated on big plays; forced/recovered fumbles, sacks, ints and passes defensed. He's always around the ball and if there's a big play to be made he'll make it.

With that being said if he's not making big plays he's a mediocre safety. He's not a headhunter like Rodney Harrison. Generally he won't overwhelm you with his tackle numbers. As an Adrian Wilson owner in the past I always thought it was best to align him with a Safety more like Harrison than an Ed Reed/ Troy Polamalu type.

Prior to last year, Adrian Wilson had 66 solos in 2002 (in 14 games), then 70, 78, 93 and 77 in the next 4 years. He was in the top 10 in solo tackles among DBs for 3 straight years. Yesterday, he faced Miami and they did very little offensively, so I'm not too concerned about this. I will add that I have not seen Arizona play, so keep that in mind. Sometimes the stats can be misleading and not tell the whole story. Also, Arizona has averaged almost 35 minutes in time of possession and that is a huge factor.

Adrian Wilson's "greatness" lies in his big play ability. He isn't known for his heavy tackle numbers. That's not to say he can't big up a couple of big games a year because he can and he has. When you draft Wilson you're expecting the Sacks, INT's and other big plays. If you get 75-80 tackles and hardly any big plays from him you'll be disappointed.

You have said twice now that he "isn't known for heavy tackle numbers" but as AB pointed out above, that isn't quite correct. Until last year he played that pseudo-linebacker postion and was always around the line of scrimmage racking up tackles. Agreed that he warrants a wait and see attitude for another week or two, but color me worried.

You're probably right in that I'm not explaining myself clearly. Adrian Wilson can get 3 tackles or less and still score huge in league's that reward for big plays. In fact, if you sort through his biggest games over the past 3 or 4 years you'll discover how well he can score (and how often) without the heavy tackle numbers. When I say "isn't known for..." is more about his big play reputation than his actual ability to log tackles. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify this.

Just can't see the Cardinals keeping the ball for 35+ minutes a game. When (if?) the Cardinals offense sputters a bit...will we see an uptick in Adrian Wilson's numbers? I'd bet yes but until he shows his old form I'll be concerned.
