Two WRs on same NFL team? (1 Viewer)

Maddness

Footballguy
Is it a good idea to draft two WRs from the same NFL team?

Rice/Taylor…Moss/Carter…Harrison/Wayne…CJ/TJH…Fitz/Boldin are some examples of this working in years past.

This year some pairs that come to mind DJax/Maclin…RWhite/JJ…Ocho/Welker…Nicks/Manningham

For me, I like the “Dream Team” receivers as my WR1 and WR2 pairing DJax and Maclin, but I'm worried about split production, bye week, late season weather, etc.

Any thoughts on taking 2 wide outs from the same team?

Production is production. You wouldn't worry about pairing CJ and Roddy if they had the same bye week. IF you feel DJax and MAclin are going to produce what you want, then you take them both.

I don't see any dominate pairings out there this year though. Fitz/Boldin was the last one IMO. DJax/Mac and Nicks/Mann might become that but its a long shot.

Does your scoring system include a penalty for having 2 WRs on the same team? Considering your question, this must be asked.

bye weeks could be a problem, but I am of the philosophy that I would rather have all my bye weeks hit at once instead of weakening my team for 3 or 4 weeks.

My 2 biggest problem with having 2 WR's on the same team is:

1. that is limits your ceiling. There are only so many TD's per game so you are rarely going to have huge performances from both WR's.

2. You leave yourself open to a really bad week. If say Philly gets shut down one week and only scores 10 points....your chances of winning my take a huge hit

Agreed. Upside is limited - when I have tried this approach one WR seems to do well at the expense of another. And it is so true that a bad week with the passing game can pretty much kill you.

Miles Austin and Dez Bryant both look like decent values at their current ADPs. I'd have no problem grabbing both if that's how the draft played out.

Very few WRs I would roster from the same team. Circumstances would have to be they dropped almost 2 rounds below their value.

Including TEs:

Wayne+Collie

Wayne+Clark

Welker+Ocho

Welker+Gronk

Ocho+Gronk

Austin+Bryant

Bryant+Witten

Austin+Witten

Fitzgerald+Heap

Nicks+Manningham(only has my flex)

Why stop at just 2 WR's from the same team? This year, at the ADP they are going, you can load up on all Rams WR's not named MSW and expect a decent return on mid to late round picks. That's assuming you are believer in Sam Bradford, which most do. MSW is an injury waiting to happen, and Bradford is going to put up good numbers this year. It's like hoarding lotto tickets.

The WR are going to score what they score over the course of the year. That can't have both decreased upside and increased downside. I believe that they are slightly negatively correlated which would mean limited upside. The only reason point 2 seems reasonable is because it is easy to say "PHI has a bad week" but it isn't really more likely that two WR from different teams having bad weeks even if their team did OK. The main advantage of having two WR from the same team is if one gets hurt, the other one is likely to go up in value. They work as a handcuff as well as useful players in their own right. I always give a small preference to WRs from teams where I already have one.For example, if you get Jennings early and take Jordy Nelson later, what can happen? If Jennings is healthy then Nelson can work his way into the offense the normal way and maybe he'll pan out. But when Jennings gets hurt and you need a good WR to start in his place, WHOA!. You already have Nelson right there to take up the slack just like the Packers have. Pairing #1 WRs with #3 WRs on a team is my favorite combination.

Our 16 team champ last year had Holmes+Edwards.

And Holmes+Burress look good now.

We've also had champs with Harrison+Wayne. JSmith+KMcCardell. RSmith+EMcCaffrey. Holt+Bruce. Rice+Taylor.

So accordingly, that's like 6 times in 24 years or so.

Admittedly 16 teamers are a different beast then 12 teamers.

That holmes+edwards are in the same discussion as the other examples you gave disgusts me.
