2009 Scouting report"

Tyrone McKenzie

6'2, 235 pounds | South Florida | Outside linebacker

Strengths: No matter what school he did it at, McKenzie was productive. He had 129 tackles for Iowa State in 2006 and topped the 100 mark in his two seasons at South Florida. Does a great job against the run breaking down in the open field and making tackles. While he isn't necessarily a big hitter, McKenzie is a sound tackler who has several forced fumbles. Works hard until the whistle blows and can make plays all over the field. Good agility, which allows him to fluidly change direction. Great character.

Weaknesses: In pass coverage, McKenzie struggled some. South Florida often took him out of the game in nickel situations because he has trouble staying with receivers,. and is best when he can redirect. Needs to get better depth in zone coverage instead of staying so near the line. Only adequate as a blitzer. Average speed getting to the outside and needs a clear hole to get through the middle. Had a titanium rod placed his leg in high school. Lacks some size and his frame is probably maxed out.

Final word: One of the most underrated defensive players in this year's draft, McKenzie just makes plays all over the field. He's played strong-side and middle linebacker, but might be best suited for the weak side. Transferred from Michigan State to Iowa State to South Florida, so he could be closer to his ill mother.

I haven't seen anything new. Recovering from the ACL injury, good chance to get playing time ahead of Gary Guyton on early downs but may never develop into an every-down talent.
