U.S. Ambassador to Libya Killed in Rocket Attack (1 Viewer)

This thread gives me a headache. Jim 11, Homoerotic H8tank who was permabanned from the Huddle (an awful forum btw) and Max Threshold should have their posting rights revoked. All three are about as ignorant and extreme as those who conducted these attacks and they make me sick to my stomach.

Why even attempt to use logic and reason in these threads anymore? They are a :tfp: with political fodder trumping any type of logical discussion on what actually happened to our ex-Patriots or the status of our foreign relations with Libya.

You ####### people need to grow up. Some actions and incidents are bigger than your brainless political nonsense you shameful ####bags.

I am not looking to invade. I do think we should of propped up Mubarak and Gadhafi reached out to us for help; we could of steered either one of these outcomes.
Yes, that would have made us even more popular with those populations.

You really need to snap to and get over whatever bitterness you hold here. But this isn't the thread to do it in.

It doesn't have much to do with the thread but this statement is not correct. The issues regarding the modern state of Israel are less than 100 years old. The Jews who live in Israel have almost nothing to do with the ancient Hebrews who lived in Judea 2,000 years ago. In fact, we may not even be talking about the same people.
I know I shouldn't feed you but I knew you couldn't resist all this talk about Israel. Why did the site for the State of Israel get chosen in "Palestine"; is it really that no one in 1948 had a better idea ,or that the Jews had a connection to the area?

I do not think we can feel as "good" about Egypt as we did two years ago.
The most optimistic liberals hoped for a turning point that would produce, for the first time in history, an Arab state that featured freedom and democratic rule for it's citizens. That hasn't happened. The most pessimistic conservatives feared an Islamist dictatorship, run by the Muslim Brotherhood, similar to Iran, extremely hostile to our interests in the region. That hasn't happened, either.

There are both positive and negative signs for the future in Egypt. I think at this point we have to adopt a "wait and see" attitude.
Unfortunately I don't think that we have a choice now but that is what happens when you have a hands off foreign policy. Just curious here: does our embassy being overrun, our flag being torn down and burned, and the fact that the protest are still happening right outside of the compound in Cairo - even after today's events - qualify as a negative sign?
Of course. The public in Egypt doesn't like us very much. That's never good. It's also not surprising.
Tim, are you going to start with we must atone for our "sins" in the Middle-East. The Egyptians slaughtered Sadat for crissakes, just because he signed a treaty with Begin; this has more to do with Israel than us.
Where did I write or indicate that? We haven't been perfect in the Middle East, but neither we nor Israel are responsible for the general misery of the Arabic people. They have, by and large, caused it themselves.
I took an implication from here; if I read too much into it , I apologize. Another question: after all the "outrage" here of Romney's comment politicizing these attacks, and him not showing enough respect for the dead, how do you feel about Obama running out to campaign stops today?
No need to apologize. I don't see the connection you're making. I have no problem with Obama campaigning, or Romney campaigning for that matter. I found Romney's criticisms to be unwise.
Explain this to me in context of the time he released it and what was happening on the ground at the same time.

They are posting on a message board not storming embassies and killing diplomats. Great logic comparing message board posters to murdering terrorists!

There's some anti-Semitism creeping into the story. Supposedly, the director of the film is a Jew (unconfirmed, and doubtful), and that he was given the money for it from "100 Jews" (again unconfirmed, and really doubtful)- but this "news" has spread on the internet and has roundly been accepted by Muslims around the world. One of the main leaders of England's Muslim community has publicly demanded that "the Jewish community apologize to all of Islam for this atrocity."
Perhaps you should take a minute to verify the claims are false before you start pointing fingers and throwing out more speculation.
New here?

Be sure to pick up a "over 95% of suicide terrorism is a direct response of foreign occupation" doggie t-shirtSeriously though, I never heard of this guy until now. Definitely going to check out one of his books.
You can check out some vids as well. I first saw one of his presentations on C-SPAN speaking at the Cato Institute. You can find papers he wrote on their website also.

OK, so you call names, demand censorship and equate me to a murdering terrorist, because I post this:
As wonderful as justice and progress and tolerance and dignity may be, America's central principles are principles of freedom. America does not--and constitutionally cannot--prosecute people because their speech is offensive.
Although what you say is offensive, and Un-American, I will defend your right to say it.

I read a little on the news but again this stuff just doesn't impact most peoples' day to day lives. I bet if I asked 100 people down in South Beach today about this incident...over half wouldn't even know it happened or would just tip their hat and say "Sorry for the families"People don't like us around the World, deal with it. I get a headache too.

good lord. I'm not at all well versed on this stuff, and came to the FFA to brush up. Dr D is a reasonable, fairly non-politicy poster with extensive expertise on all things middle east - he's my go-to guy for a better understanding of what's going on over there. If Dr D's thoughts above are accurate and this thread is full of hackery, then the FFA as a news/current event source is effectively dead.Is this thread even worth reading?

To be brief: the vast majority of Jewish settlers whose great grandchildren are Israelis came to Palestine between 1890 and 1920; the rest were Holocaust survivors. The original Zionists chose Palestine, of course, because they religiously believed it to be God's chosen homeland for the Jewish people. But they had very little in common with the ancient Hebrews who were mostly kicked out of Palestine between 200 and 400 AD. Those ancient Jews fled to Europe and Asia, where they comingled with all sorts of other races and cultures, and at the same time some cultures in Russia adopted Judiasm around 600-700 AD; many of the people we think of as "Jews" today may be descended from these Russians, originally called Khazars. Though Palestine was chosen mostly because of the Bible, Jerusalem and the site of the Temple, the actual Jewish settlers who arrived in 1890-1920 and formed the basis for the modern State of Israel were not religious, but secularist in nature.

Anti-Islam filmmaker in hiding after protests

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An Israeli filmmaker based in California went into hiding Tuesday after his movie attacking Islam's prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya, where one American was killed.

Speaking by phone from an undisclosed location, writer and director Sam Bacile remained defiant, saying Islam is a cancer and that the 56-year-old intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

...
Reporters uncover fact that "Sam Bacile" is actually an ex-con named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula

1. Quit with things like "dickbag" and "horses ###". Both of you. For good.

2. Wired reporting that there was no Marine detail, just a small "State Department security force." Is anyone else confused as to why we don't have Marines guarding the embassy in Libya? I would think that would be one of the 5 or 6 most likely places to have actual marines.

I don't like those people's opinions that dickbags come in and #### all over a thread about a person's tragic death, so don't allow them to post anymore.
Fixed that for you. Geebus, you really are a dickbag.
Fake outrage noted.
Thanks for proving my point. You areally, really are just a self-centered horses ###.
So says the dude who can't post without name-calling.

:goodposting: This still blows me away. It seems like it would be SOP for an embassy in a country like this to have a hardened "fallback" position somewhere in the compound that could be defended by a handful of Marines. It's not like they're being stormed by an all-star team of Israeli and UK commandos -- these are jackasses with guns who have no chance overtaking a small group of dug-in US troops.

Tim, what you posted in all reality doesn't change the situation; the Jews are staying in Israel and the Arab world wants them out. Now I think you can take an academia based response an say that they really don't have the historical connection but they are there and have shed their blood defending their land. If you want to make an issue that these particular Jews do not have a valid claim I think it removes the issue from the scope of the real world and puts it into the scope of theory. The Jews were "given" this land by the UN and have claimed it as theirs, right or wrong, that is reality. Now I don't think you are arguing that the Jews shouldn't be there, right? You do agree that besides the many smaller reasons for these attacks, that America's support for Israel looms large as a main reason. I will even concede that this initial attack, if it was by Al-Qaeda, is now based in the direct conflict between the U.S. and Al-Qaeda; Israel is secondary to this point, but their existence is the issue in the region.

Speaking by phone from an undisclosed location, writer and director Sam Bacile remained defiant, saying Islam is a cancer and that the 56-year-old intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

Reporters uncover fact that "Sam Bacile" is actually an ex-con named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula
Like O.J. Simpson, not a Jew (apparently a Coptic Christian).
This is gonna be just great for the Coptics in Egypt.

2. Wired reporting that there was no Marine detail, just a small "State Department security force." Is anyone else confused as to why we don't have Marines guarding the embassy in Libya? I would think that would be one of the 5 or 6 most likely places to have actual marines.
I said the same thing when the details first emerged. This is absurd to me. We just attacked this country a year ago and it still does not have a stable government. Why would the State Department leave them almost completely undefended?
