I loved me some Pride. Not having that stupid cage to lean on made things much more entertaining. Is the 10 minute first of Pride better?

on the post-PPV show on ESPN 2 they showed that Rashad was stunned by an incidental knee from Rampage when Rashad went for a takedown. Rampage had quite a few clean shots and Rashad weathered them better then i would have expected. Not sure where Rampage goes from here. I don;t think his acting career will jump off like he is hoping, so he will either have to get back in the groove and improve, or he could become a gatekeeper of sorts for the LHW division. And the media at the post-conference are idiots, Franklin McNeal being at the top of that list. Some of these guys keep talking about all the pre-fight hype and are acting like the fight did not even occur tonightGotta give Rashad props for surviving the flurry of punches from Rampage. I thought he was out.In his prime, I'm pretty sure those punches would have easily knocked Rashad unconscious. Rampage had the fists of steel at one point. One solid hit and you were out, much less a few in a row while laying on your back. Even Rampage admitted he put all of his eggs into one basket there. That doesn't sound like the Rampage of old :(
I think Rashad was right when he said (TUF) that Rampage is too slow and his head is too big. Rampage of old would have killed the best of Rashad.Gotta give Rashad props for surviving the flurry of punches from Rampage. :(I can see Hathaway on his way up while Diego is on his way down. Kind of like when Diego fought Karo when Karo was still a contender. Something just smells like a trap for me with that fight and I am staying away from it.![]()
good call dude. Never expected that.
Seriously. I completely didn't see it that way, and a great call by yourself. What made you think Diego was on his way down? Obviously after the fight it seems like he hasn't evolved at all, and maybe took Hathaway lightly, but i thought he would be alright after the Penn fight. Maybe a letdown after losing his shot at the title and seeing how he had to start all over:(I can see Hathaway on his way up while Diego is on his way down. It was a great event, aside from the main event. The main is how most people judge the quality of the card though.I thought this was a great night of fights, and I was completely sober.:( It wouldn't be a UFC thread without 3 or 4 "glad I didn't pay for it" posts. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?![]()
I don't think it so much is the cage as it is the way fights are judged. There were only 2 moments of any significant offense in the main event, Rashad wobbling Rampage with a right hand in the 1st and Rashad nearly knocking himself out on Rampage's knee and punches that followed in the 3rd. If the judges scored only offense as they did in PRIDE, you'd see much more active and aggressive fights. The way most judges score fights in North America, pressing people against the cage and/or maintaining top position is a very effective strategy. The two Dream events in Japan that featured the cage didn't have much "wall n stall."I loved me some Pride. Not having that stupid cage to lean on made things much more entertaining. Is the 10 minute first of Pride better?![]()
Great call on Hathaway. His striking looked very good and completely outclassed Diego. If Hathaway's takedown defense will allows him to stay on his feet, he can light people up on the feet at welterweight. Bright future for such a young guy.Seriously. "I thought the decision was [expletive]," White said. "Listen, we're always in this position. I'm no [expletive] judge, but I thought Brilz won the fight.
"You can't leave it in the hands of these judges. You always hear me saying it, and guys keep doing it."
Brilz, a lightly regarded late replacement for Nogueira's original opponent, Forrest Griffin, appeared to most observers to have done enough to earn a closely contested opening period. The second frame was unquestionably his, while the third was clearly Nogueira's. But it was the closing seconds of the second frame, when a fatiguing Brilz failed to finish a wobbling Nogueira, that White ultimately believes cost the wrestler the fight – not the judges' observations of the opening round.
"I think Brilz could have knocked 'Little Nog' out at the end of the second round," White said. "He should have [expletive] went for it when 'Little Nog' was hurt."
I'm getting sick of Dana White's "don't let it go to the judges" shtick. Dana probably has enough pull to make the NSAC or CSAC more accountable for the bad judging that oftentimes takes place. Don't blame the fighters or put it on them to change strategy based on the fact that other people cannot do their job.Dana White on the Brilz / Lil Nog decision:

Dana is right. If the fighter does his job well the judges don't have a job to do. Brilz should have ended the fight in the 2nd. I remember hearing that the UFC is trying to put together better judge training. I'm sure that is a sticky road though. These guys are appointed by the commissions. How do you get fighters to strike more? Most guys want to balance offense and defense. You can't force guys to slug it out for 15 minutes even if their cardio could handle it. Neither guy wants to be the one that takes the risk of fighting recklessly and getting caught with a KO counter.Dana is right. If the fighter does his job well the judges don't have a job to do. That is one of the worst analogies I have ever heard. Most analogies are severly flawed somewhere, but I'll take a crack at a couple for you.It is more like when the better team is clearly out playing the other team but they keep hanging around and then hit a full court prayer at the buzzer for the win. The better team's coach would then tell everyone they should have put them away when they could. Or in football the Hockuly game. People still ##### about that call in San Diego, but the truth is Denver still had to make the 2pt conversion and they did. On the same freaking play. Chargers had other chances to win and they did not capitalize. To me, saying "don't let the fight go to the judges" would be like telling someone to not take a charge in the NBA because who knows how the ref is going to call it.

I agree that my analogy may not be great, but it is a lot better than the ones you threw out there. Dana should be blaming the judges for poor decisions, not putting implicit blame on the fighters.Sebowski said:That is one of the worst analogies I have ever heard. Most analogies are severly flawed somewhere, but I'll take a crack at a couple for you.It is more like when the better team is clearly out playing the other team but they keep hanging around and then hit a full court prayer at the buzzer for the win. I agree, K-Flo would be the favorite against Diego, especially now. I am not sure where he goes from here. i think Dana said he wanted him back at LW, so maybe a Sean Sherk or something. he'll be a tough one to trust going forward. and there are some good events coming up soon. i know we have mentioned a few, and i wish i had the energy to throw up a nice list of what is coming up, but one i keep thinking about is taking Chuck +110 over Rich Franklin. A few things:I was pretty much thinking that he hasn't evolved and used to get by by out-working his opponents. Diego isn't really great at anything except scrambles. IMO, watching Diego makes Kenny Florian's progression as a fighter that much more impressive. The Flo would probably be the favorite if they had a rematch.
I ended up adding a unit on Rashad after all the late money went in on Rampage. Definetly made the fight mush more interesting. I was in to every clinch and takedown attempt knowing that it just took one mistake to get clipped.
I'm not sure how you could take Chuck. 1. Chuck has been preparing to fight at this time, as opposed to Rich where i have no idea what he has been doing. I am guessing he probably is trying to develop a business with a gyum or something, and has kept maybe in shape, but maybe Chuck is more prepared?
2. Chuck has been destroyed laltely, but his KO's were due to guys who were quicker than Chuck. Rich has power, but i am not sure he is quicker.
3. I don't know if either will try and take this fight to the ground, so the stand-up seems to be the4 determiner here. I think Rich Franklin was training with Anderson Silva for a bit, is it possible he has evolved his game at all?
Tito but not by much.Who would have you guys taken with Chuck v Tito?
No way, I would have taken Chuck at anything better than -150. Looking at his last 5 fights though, he is 1-4. Lost to Jardine, Rampage, Rashad, and Shogun. He got KO'd with Rashad, Shogun, and TKO's with Rampage (i can't remember that Rampage fight for some reason off the top of my head). Rashad and Shogun and quicker than Franklin and Tito. If the Chuck that beat Wanderlei shows up to take on either Tito or Rich Franklin, I think he can win. The only KO i can think of from Franklin (off the top of my head again) is the Nate Quarry fight. All this being said, these would be light plays for me. It is prety difficult to invest in a stand-up fighter who has been KO'd a few times in a row. I honestly think Chuck could will himself to beat Tito, I just can't imagine him being able to live with himself if Tito won.EDIT: just to continue betting with Tito, I don't know how you can have any faith in him at this point. His body is practically broken. You can't bounce back from back and neck surgeries. We'll see, but if he can't get the power to take down Chuck, who has better than average takedown defense, I am not sure what Tito could do.Tito but not by much.Who would have you guys taken with Chuck v Tito?

I saw that picture, and had to check it a few times. I saw that thread on bloodyelbow, and saw somebody referenced another picture with Chuck in shape like that. I honestly have to think it is photoshopped or something, but if it isn't, good for Chuck.Liddell is training hard for this fight. See him in the middle.
This is a possibility, but i honestly don't know enough about it. I know with getting KO'd, when a fighter fights without much rest in between, the chances of getting KO'd do go up. With Chuck taking a year off to do his thing, from what i heard that it supposed to help with the recovery from those things. The thing is Chuck doesn't fight any other way, so hopefully he isn't. I think if he gets KO'd by Franklin, he will call it quits. getting KO'd by Rashad (who just rocked Rampage, and his punch on Liddell was right on the "button") was bad, and he probably took the fight with Shogun without recovering like he should have. No question Shogun absolutely destroyed Chuck, but I am not sure how Chuck will look this time around. Like I have been saying, Rich Franklin isn't as fast as Rashad or Shogun, so Chuck may not be as susceptible. I would like to see him bring in some new training partners though and push himself a little more. The Iceman is punch drunk, you can see it in his eyes. It's sad when they don't know when to get out of the game.

The thought of a Lidell v. Franklin main event at this stage of their careers =![]()
Agreed. This card should be free on Spike. Only fights with any semblence of future title contender implications are Griffin-Dunham (both fighters are a few wins away still, but that should be a great one) and Kampmann-Thiago. Everything else looks pretty much randomly thrown together. This should be the card Dana uses to "make it up to the fans" for the Silva debacle a few cards ago.raisydaisy said:[edit] Main cardLight Heavyweight bout: Chuck Liddell vs. Rich Franklin [1] Heavyweight bout: Mirko Cro Cop vs. Patrick Barry[1] Welterweight bout: Paulo Thiago vs. Martin Kampmann[1] Heavyweight bout: Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel[1] Welterweight bout: Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald[1] [edit] Preliminary card (Spike TV)Lightweight bout: Tyson Griffin vs. Evan Dunham[1] Lightweight bout: Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman[1] [edit] Preliminary cardMiddleweight bout: David Loiseau vs. Mario Miranda [1] Welterweight bout: James Wilks vs. Peter Sobotta[1] Welterweight bout: Ricardo Funch vs. Claude Patrick[1] Welterweight bout: Mike Pyle vs. Jesse Lennox[1] This is a dog of a card even if Tito was on it. Main card looks like a lot of fun, and the Spike TV bouts too, but the fights just don't have a major impact on any given division. Condit/MacDonald and Griffin/Dunham should be fantastic. Sorry to say that I don't really care about the main event.Franklin has KO'd one guy in the last 3 years (7 fights) and that was Travis effing Lutter. I think Chuck catches him with something. There's going to be a lot of posting of this smiley:by the Liddell supporters after the fight on Saturday.
