Underrated Bands (3 Viewers)

Talk Talk. Most people think they were an 80s 1 hit wonder but they had two of the defining albums of post-rock, plus one of the best art rock albums of the 80s. Genius band that was way ahead of their time.

Perfect. Loved their moodier stuff that came out later that seemed like nobody listened to, including that bizarre O'rang thing.

Great call.

I was one of those people until I discovered Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock in the late 90's. So different than their 80's hits.

Agreed regarding the Spoon love in the FFA, but I'm assuming the OP was referring to the general population.

I went to a Spoon show last week and whenever I told anyone in the days leading up to the show who I was seeing I got a blank stare.  Now, I do live in Utah, so maybe take that with a grain of Salt Lake, but I don't think they have a wide following in the general population.
You are correct and I have no idea who Spoon is.

They've sold a billion records, have a star on the hollywood walk of fame and are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They're considered one of the best American bands ever and they've been selling out arenas & stadiums for 4 decades.
Pffft.  Talk to me when they've been selling out arenas and stadiums for 5 decades.

Yep.

and they barely made a list of 100 all time greats.

Any genre?

They probably arent everyone's bag, but The Fleet Foxes.

Elbow is criminally underated in the States, in my estimation.

Silversun Pickups are hugely underrated. Great band.
I can agree, for the most part.  The first Pickup's song I ever heard was Lazy Eye....which I despise.  Wrote them off because of that for a couple of years.  Listened to some other tracks at that point and was much more impressed.

XTC is a great call.

My pick is a band that's been around 32 years and that just held a residency at Madison Square over 17 days in which they performed 13 nights to either sold-out or nearly sold-out shows. The mainstream media hardly covered the run, and only a small percentage of FBGs have been chatting about it. The band played 237 songs clocking in at just under 40 hours yet they did not repeat a song. It was a feat that likely had never been considered before nor will any band ever match what they did. That's the most underrated band I know.

Ok, lll bite.

Abba?

Not a fan of some of the newer stuff, but overall:

Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters

Not sure there has been an album released in the last 15 years I have to more than Ghosts of the Great Highway.

Also, this thread is once again proof that the ffa underrates the ladies.  Anything from Sleater-Kinney  to Tori Amos belongs in here.

1. I wouldn't call BIlly Joel a band.

2. He's rated pretty high.

3. Pretty sure he plays Piano Man at every concert.
