Unorthodox Things You Do (1 Viewer)

Are you a true believer in something that may go against the norm or conventional wisdom or that just something that your friends think is weird? What do you do and why do you do it?

Here's a few of mine:

1. Electric bike: I replaced our second car with an electric bike. It's a ton of fun. I use it for my commute. It saves us a second car payment/gas/insurance, it's good for the environment and I get exercise. Downhill both ways. On the rare occasion when two vehicles are needed one of us just gets an Uber.

2. Raw milk: I eliminated dairy from my diet years ago because it would upset my stomach and also seemed to exacerbate my allergies. A friend convinced me to try raw milk (unpasteurized - straight from the utter) and although it may be contaminated with deadly bacteria it tastes great and I can drink it... no stomach/allergy issues whatsoever.

3. Co-sleeping: our kids have slept in bed with us since they were infants. My wife started it because she's somewhat of a granola head but she has convinced me there are emotional benefits. My boys (2 & 4) are completely fearless and I think it has to do with co-sleeping. They simply haven't experienced irrational fear. For example, we went on a camping trip with a bunch of friends and one night a few of the older girls he had been hanging out with walked up to the bathrooms. The bathrooms were about 300 yards down a dark path and up a staircase. My 4-year old could see their flashlights so he took off after them down the path without a flashlight before someone corralled him. It amazed me that he was about to do that because the thought of doing it myself, without a flashlight, creeped me out.

Dude wtf?

Co-sleeping??? Never evern heard of it and seems to me that it would screw your kids up and ultimately affect your sexual relationship with your wife.  You two are just never intimate?

How do you know he didn't do it just because he has that type of personality?  What evidence is there that co-sleeping had anything to do with it?  I know many kids who are pretty adventurous/fearless yet they don't co-sleep.

And who the hell goes 300 yards away to use the bathroom when camping?  You are surrounded by bathroom!

I give like $400-$500/mo to the church.

ETA because my wife makes me and she’s busting my chops to give like 2x as much.
We are at $300/mo, and I absolutely hate it.  But my wife makes more money than me so there's that.  Anyway, I don't feel the least bit guilty when I throw away a few hundred in the casino or dumb things like fake football.

Often set an alarm in the middle of the night.  I love the feeling of waking up and then realizing that I have numerous hours left before I have to get up.
I do the same thing.

It's probably not a good idea, but I do it anyway.

I see a yellow hat in your future.

I devote a unusual amount of time on the weekends to washing produce and preparing complicated Sunday meals (Coq au Vin and Beef Bourguignon, as for instances), only to spend my Sunday afternoons imbibing high-ABV beer while listening to family ooh and ahh about how great dinner is.  Ultimately, eating is a solitary activity for me.

We have a healthy sex life. Sometimes we rendezvous in the guest room after they fall asleep but most of the time we just put a cartoon on, lay some snacks out and sneak away for a bit.

It’s just a theory bro.

Good luck with this.  We have some friends that we used to frequently go on weekend getaways with who co-sleep with their daughter.  Seems like a total nightmare.  My wife and I use our time after the kids are asleep to have adult conversations and watch a TV show or two.  They invited us up to Tahoe to stay in a cabin they rented for the weekend.  We figured we would put the kids to bed and knock back some adult beverages and hang out like old times, but 8:30 rolled around and they all head to bed or else their daughter won't sleep.

They have always been amazed that we have time to watch a TV show at night.  I guess they just figure everyone goes to bed when their kid is ready.  Their kid is also a disaster which may not be because of co-sleeping, but I tell myself it's the reason why.

Yeah WTF is actually suppossed to be the advantage of doing this?  Pretty much guarantees the kid becomes overly dependent on the parent.  Why one would think this gives the kid “courage” seems ridiculous.

I think blossom sleeps with her kids. The kids are like 13 and 19. I'm exaggerating but when she explained it seemed reasonable.

Every day, first time I'm in driveway each day (usually leaving for work), I find a penny, then toss it over my left shoulder.

I'm not really superstitious, and I wouldn't sweat it if I forgot to do it, but on the other hand if I'm pulling out of the driveway and remember at the last moment that I forgot to do it, I'll jump out and take care of it.

A few times I've had to walk around in pouring rain to find a penny.

What in the world?

The second craziest thing I saw in here was some guy saying he wakes himself up in the middle of the night to remind himself he has more time to sleep.

The actual craziest was like 10 people going oh wow that’s a good idea.

Why do you have multiple pennies in your driveway?

You just have an abundance of pennies laying around your yard?  I ALWAYS pick up a penny from ground when I see one out and about for luck and can say that it happens about 5 times per year.  I wouldn't have a job if I had to do this before leaving every morning.
