Fans tell Favre: Please come back

Minneapolis Star & Tribune

Favre fans put a sign in Hattiesburg, Miss., imploring him to return.

Last update: February 4, 2010 - 11:22 PM

hile Vikings players and management might be giving Brett Favre time and space to make a decision on whether to come back next season, a group of fans is taking time and space to make it clear that Favre in purple is all they want. And they have the billboard to prove it.

A Facebook group called "4 MILLION VIKINGS FANS WANT BRETT FAVRE BACK IN MINNESOTA FOR 2010" is responsible for an electronic billboard that went up earlier this week in Favre's offseason home of Hattiesburg, Miss.

The message on the billboard is distinctly Minnesotan: "Hey #4, do Minnesota fans love you and want you back next year? You Brettcha!"

The message is slated to appear through Tuesday, said Jay Tappe, the 34-year-old Minneapolis resident who got the ball rolling by starting the Facebook group. After that, he and others will reassess the message and decide what to do with an ad that costs $650 per week and is funded entirely by group member donations.

Of course, bearing that burden has become easier as the group has multiplied rapidly. Tappe said he was devastated by the NFC title game loss, but by the day after he decided he needed a 180-degree attitude switch. The Facebook group was the first order of business.

"I had to turn it into something positive because I was so crushed Sunday with how bad Favre was getting beat up," Tappe said. "All the sudden there were 10,000 members after a day. I was like, 'What in the hell is going on?'"

That pace has kept reasonably steady. As of Thursday afternoon, there were more than 90,000 members. The billboard -- which is visible from a major U.S. highway in Hattiesburg -- was the next step. The final piece? Continuing to raise money to not only sustain the billboard but also contribute to the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation.

If that isn't enough to convince Favre to come back, how about another billboard? KFAN has its own sign in the works. This one will be visible from both directions of the same highway and could be up as early as Friday. It will say: "DEAR BRETT, DEANNA & FAMILY, THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MINNESOTA. WE'D LOVE TO HAVE YOU BACK. VIKINGS FANS 4-EVER."

"The message is geared directly at the Favre family as a whole and not just Brett," said Tim Hyde, promotions director at KFAN, which broadcasts Vikings games. "After, all he needs the support of his family to make the decision to come back. We want to let him know he is also welcome here in Minnesota."

That's coming across in plain English.

Great to see support for a great player :lmao:

Did anyone doubt that he owns this team? It is hard to imagine that two years ago Viking fans hated his guts. I hope they get what they want.

Thanks for the update.

It's probably all ESPN employees.

____

Man Vikings fans are really desperate.

What do they do after he retires for good? He never mentors anyone or even allows any backup to get playing time in blowouts.

In before Packer fans get pissy unprovoked, opine on how this would be bad move for the vikes, and basically act like a bunch of jilted lovers. Ooops, too late. Guess I have to be a bit quicker to the trigger.

seeing as you all probably didn't watch most of the Vikings games I'll give you both the benefit of the doubt...He was a different player from all accounts this year. Every game they showed him on the sidelines looking at the photos of the last series with Sage, TJ and the WR's talking with them on what he saw, or what he missed. Seemed to be some teaching and learning going on there to me :lmao:

You're surprised that people want a guy that put those numbers up back? The Vikings were a mediocre, borderline playoff team before Favre got there. With him, and even with a running game that didn't do as well, they were a top 3 NFL team and legit Super Bowl contender. Why is it difficult to understand why people would want that to keep going?

I'm impressed, it only took 16 years. I have no doubt Minnesota fans love him, and I'm sure you want him back. Are you Vikes fan hoping he snaps his streak of picks to cost his teams NFC championships?Rodgers for Life

I certainly want him back. You don't just retire after a year like that.
is there really a specific year that favre retires after?
The one where they carry him off the field in a stretcher most likely.
He has said he doesn't want to stay too long. After the reactions his family had when he was hit in the last game I doubt they approve his coming back this time. He could still do it of course but in the past he has said his family said he should play. seeing as you all probably didn't watch most of the Vikings games I'll give you both the benefit of the doubt...He was a different player from all accounts this year. so obviously you dont watch the Vikings games to the end then? Cause Jackson got into at least 5 games this year in blowouts...once at the beginning of the 4th quarter...anything else you want to say bad about him?

:wall: BTW...it would be the right move with a possible lockout in 2011 and they have nothing at this point at QB with Sage and needing to resign Tarvaris.

We could talk bad about this guy all day.Infact so can some of the past and current players, coaches, and other fans.

Oh and I'm sure some people from South Mississippi , New York, and Green Bay could speak bad of him personally as well.

You honestly dont think it is a disgusting antic to keep a team hostage so you can miss training camp for your own selfish reasons? I understand your a fan, but common sense has to come into play? but I could be wrong.

With a lock out looming the folowing year Favre has a real chance to lock up his records for a generation if he plays one more year. A lost season for Manning, Brees, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Romo, and Cutler and they can't touch him. Rodgers can't touch his records because he spent too many years waiting for his chance.

I take no position about whetehr Favre is all about his records, I just note the opportunity.

Ugh yeah, that kind of irked me to be honest. His last couple seasons in GB, Favre would just be off by himself on an island.

Yeah.. I think his anger towards Management trying to "push" Rodgers irked him and caused him to take it out on Rodgers rather than who he really was angry at..

That would be Favre! He was the guy talking about retiring since 2002.

You obviously didnt put the post before my response up there, as the reason why I said "we could talk bad!"As someone else said..."Anyone else wanna talk bad?" Thats i why I typed that response! Is it not true? Or you just gonna avoid the question and look to make others post off taking that out of context?

I love how the Vikings fans love him now, but did you love him and his antics while he played for GB?

No, so why the hardcore dedication to a guy that came back for his own reasons and not any reason but to put it in the Packers face? Ahhh, I answered my own question.

I'll take it as more loyalty to your team the to Favre, which I can respect.

I'd probably feel a little different about him if he weren't so awesome this year. But since he rocked, yeah I don't have a problem with him anymore and would like to see him come back next year, as well. If I manipulated the post to make you look bad, I apologize, but your post looks like it's insinuating there's as much negative talk regarding Favre as there should be positive.. When I posted that I assumed you were the previous poster who was incorrect in emphatically stating that Favre was never sat in favor of Tarvaris this year. If he came back for his own reasons and sucked, then nobody would be asking for him back.

And there is this quote from TJax: LINK: http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/05/21/like-ev...or-brett-favre/

"I was bitter. I was mad," Jackson said. "But then once he got here, and I got a chance to be around him and see what kind of person he was, I felt a lot better. He helped me a lot. I learned so much just by watching him. I wouldn't go back and change things. Having a chance to play behind a guy of his caliber was just great. I've had other guys, veteran guys I've learned from, but nobody who's done what he's done."

I'm guessing he's helped a bit with the other QBs... course maybe it's just me.

First of all, who wouldn't rather see Favre playing on Sundays over Tarvaris Jackson?

Second, Aaron Rodgers became the first Tedford QB to become a top QB in the NFL after backing up Favre so maybe there's something to Favre's (lack of?) mentoring.

Very odd. Favre didn't let Aaron Rodgers in any games except that multi pick Cowboys game.

I didn't say anything bad about him just Vikings fans that call him a mentor. Chatting with other players on the sidelines still is not teaching.

Personally, the retirement thing never bothered me in the least, was just overblown by the media hype.

As it turns out, a whole lot of Packers fans were quite satisfied with Favre and his "antics" when he was on our team. Very few players have tried so hard to win games as he did for our team.

Sure there are haters in Packerland as well, but plenty of fans respected him and wanted him back. It really just boils down to having two great QBs on the same team and something had to give. And the haters came out in DROVES saying he could not still play (and some in here know who they are). And he proved each and everyone of them wrong last season. Clearly, with the numbers he put up many were wrong about his abilities and work ethic; with the right surrounding team and coaching he was an elite QB.

Since they cannot impugn his play at this point (or heart), they will take pot shot other places--such as "mentoring".

Well...plenty of Packer fans just wanted to know...and it never...never...never got into May and June.Only once was it just before the draft I think. Other than the year he retired and then unretired.I think just the not-knowing was bothersome at times. He proved me wrong last year...I did not think he was capable of playing that way...much less at this age...because other than his MVP years...he had not played that well and controlled his entire career. As for mentoring...it was always overblown because of the one quote. Rodgers' own quotes will tell you that Favre helped him quite a bit.
