UPDATE: ESPN reports Cards to name Kurt Warner starting QB (1 Viewer)

Leinart was brutal tonight (3 INT's only 3 pts on the board in first half), but Wisenhunt suggested at halftime that the receivers weren't running proper routes. When Warner came in, Warner through a nice pass to a wide open Boldin. Warner did nothing special, but he did open up the running lanes, and the Cardinals put up a quick 2 TDs on the ground.

Is Warner now the starter game 1, or is Wisenhunt going to be stuborn and stick with Leinart?

I have Warner on my team, but I think if the Cardinals want to win this year, Warner needs to start.

UPDATE/EDIT:

Aug 23 Warner may have claimed the top spot on Arizona's depth chart because Matt Leinart struggled badly on Saturday.

Recommendation: Leinart completed 4-of-12 passes for 24 yards and three interceptions. Warner was 2-of-4 for 40 yards. Warner won't have a lot of job security, but he will probably take over as the starter.

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to name Kurt Warner as the team's starting quarterback, a team source said Sunday.

Matt Leinart's poor perfomance Saturday night against the Oakland Raiders probably sealed the decision.

Leinart had three interceptions in the first half and completed just 4 of 12 passes for 24 yards. His passer rating was 2.8. The Cardinals won the game 24-0.

The source said Leinart's training-camp performance has been uneven, and the Cardinals are concerned about his arm strength and consistency.

After the game, coach Ken Whisenhunt said Leinart was still in the running for the Cardinals' starting job.

"I know Matt's down because he didn't play as well as he would have liked," Whisenhunt said. "This competition, being pushed by Kurt, has made Matt tougher. It's one of the things you have to be as a quarterback."

The preseason is a big giant audition for roster spots and starting jobs. What has Leinart done to win that starting job other than being the #10 pick in the draft in 2006?Arizona has said there would be a competition for the job. If Leinart is still the starter, then there was never a competition.

i wouldnt say it would throw a wrench into the offense. Warner was much more effective than Leinart last season with the same offense, and Leinart hasnt really seperated himself in preseason either. I do get that you dont want to bench what you hope is your franchise QB because he had a bad preseason game, but that passing offense just seems a lot scarier with Warner behind center. I think Leinart goes into the season as the starter, but with a short leash

I'm the first to say people often overreact to preseason numbers, but in this case I think where there's smoke, there's fire. 4-of-12 with 3 INTs is horrible, and if you watched the game, I'm sure you agree he looked as bad as his stats suggest. From a fantasy standpoint, starting Warner seems to be a no-brainer. However it also seems that when they start him, they have an 8-win ceiling as to the maximum amount of games they can win. He'll start off strong but then slowly show his age as the season goes on.

So if Warner ends up starting, it's better for Fitzgerald, Boldin and even Edge owners, but I think the team really, really, really, wants Leinart to succeed as the starter. I expect him to have a longer leash this year and start the season as the starter.

He showed himself to be a productive QB his first year starting. Jay Cutler showed he was going to be the franchise QB after his first five starts. Peyton Manning finished in (or near) the top 10 his first year starting. Leinart can't even hold a candle to Peyton.So, he has 16 starts and two training camps. He should be looking a heck of a lot better than he has this preseason. Leinart is showing himself to be nothing more than a piece of entitled trash.

First off, I'm in no way saying I think Leinart will be good. In fact, I think he has an affinity for game tape studying that is going to be his downfall. You bring up some good points as to Rodgers and Rivers and Cutler. Although, Rodgers has just shown competency in the pre-season. I know, I know, Weeks 3 and 4 of the pre-season are a lot closer to actual games than Weeks 1 and 2 are but I'm waiting to form my opinion on Rodgers until I see how he performs as the actual starter.

But as we have learned from football time and time again, it takes some players a bit longer to adjust than others. Look at Drew Brees -- he wasn't what you would call a quality QB his first three years in the league but he's turned into one of the top 5 in the entire NFL.

Why would they give him a LONGER leash then they gave him last year. He had two games last year before they turned to Kurt to save the season. I honeslty believe that it is a competition this year in preseason, and Kurt just won. I think Kurt gets named the starter and Matt watches and waits for an injury or preseason 2009. Remember, Wishenhut has a job on the line. I think he is being judged on a trip to the playoffs this year, not on if he can make Matt a funtional QB option.

Because he's supposed to be the future of the franchise?

He was supposed to be the future of the franchise. This is his third season in the NFL, and his second training camp. If Leinart is ever going to be a franchise QB, he should be showing it by now. He is not accurate, decisive, nor explosive, and not even a good game manager.It's more like the Cards wish he could be the future of the franchise. Well, the only advice I have for the Cards is for them to wish in one hand and crap in the other. Then let them see which hand fills up first.

He's only started 16 games in his career. Since when are we so critical of inexperienced QB's? So he had a horrible performance last night. Whippity-doo. Now, I'm NOT saying Matt Leinart is on par with Peyton Manning. However, his stats so far haven't been too bad. He just needs to put the game tape time in and get some more starts under his belt and he'll have every opportunity to succeed.

It's the pre-season everyone. Let's slow down a bit. Three picks isn't good in any game obviously, but remember, he hasn't played since Week 5 of last year. There's likely some rust he needs to shake off before we can get an accurate representation of where his progression is going.

I understand what you're trying to say, but Peyton's 16 starts came in his FIRST year and we're not heading into Leinart's 3rd year. QB's are supposed to benefit from sitting behind a starter and learning. He really should be looking much more polished than he is now. Also, stats are one thing and then there's just how it looks on the field. Leinart has yet to resemble anything that Peyton did, even in his 1st year. Point is, if he looked like this in his 1st year, he'd get a pass. He was on a short leash last year, but even in his 2nd year, I could see allowing some leeway. Heading into his 3rd year and being given a chance to take the starting job, he's simply not getting it done. It's ok to have a bad game like he just had if there were something else to indicate some signs of improvement or promise and that just hasn't appeared, at least not in what we've seen.
