US Men's National Team (17 Viewers)

Sending McKennie home is the right call, though I'm sure he'll be criticized for it if we lose.  If a guy doesn't care about being here enough to do even the basics, he doesn't deserve to play.

Hopefully they rally around each other.

Yup - big call by Berhalter.  I admire the stance.

There is a non-zero chance he loses the job with a poor outcome in Honduras, but this sounds like the right call for the team.  No player is bigger than the team, and all must abide by the same rules.

ugh. Weston.

I was coming in because I remembered...David and Buchanan both only played part of that game. Canada had an easy time of it without 2 of their best players. Not because they were hurt or selfish morons...because Canada wasn't all out trying to win this game.
I think they played Laryea over Buchanan because they thought neutralizing Pulisic was more important Buchanan’s offense from the wing back position. Which seemed the right choice to me.

Disagree with sending Swag home.  He made a mistake, he apologized...time to move on and get some points at Honduras.

Would be different if we had 6 points.

GGG should be fired with anything less than a Win at Honduras...don't see how sending Swag home helps him.

Qualification is the only thing that matters.  GGG trying to teach young men right from wrong is secondary.

There is way more to this story I think.

If GGG wanted to suspend him for a second game, that would have been announced yesterday.  They waited until today because they were likely waiting for some other shoe to drop or some other set of information to become available.

You should listen to what Landon said.  Landon is the most delicate player we have ever had with his words and he shredded Weston because he knows what Weston did (none of us do).

Landon is pretty much the anti Lalas when it comes to what he says, so when he goes out of his way to say what Weston did is almost unrepairable, I would recommend you not blame the coach.

Fair point, I reserve the right to change my opinion if damning facts come out.  I can't imagine what those would be.

our media sucks in these cases.  Any other country the media would be ripping through the organization to find the real story.   Landon found out, so some reporter should be able to do the same.

I think I would agree with your stance if he already did not get suspended for what sounds like a similar problem in Italy.  This is REALLY bad imo.

Whether GGG gets fired or not, this is ALL on Weston imo.

I guess I really don't care about partying, or covid protocols or eating habits when qualification is on the line.

I agree with your Landon take, if it gives him pause, he must have really done something crazy.

then you basically advocating removing all rules for players who are in the majority 18-24 age range.   I don't think that ends well for any one.

It sucks that he has to sit out two games but again, I think your anger is misplaced.  It should be entirely directed at Weston IMO.

If worse comes to worst, and US Soccer fires GGG, US Soccer is basically going to be stuck with a Dave Sarachan type care taker or they are going to have spend a ton of money to get some one on a one year contract that is not already employed.

I hope Earnie is ready to pull the trigger immediately if that is what he wants.  The new coach will have only until Oct 7 to learn the roster before the next game comes.

Goff intimated that it wasn’t as bad as him partying on Broadway, so I think the media knows. They just won’t burn a source.

I don't think there's probably a lot more to it.  We've been living with COVID for 18 months.  Everyone knows what the protocols are and how much they matter in terms of availability.  If he decided, during the WCQ window(!), to break those it's terrible.

And he deserves everything he gets -- some of which I think is probably going to surprise him.

Ernie better be ready or he needs to go too.  He's responsible for the Berhalter hire in the first place.

Again, all is forgotten if we get 3 in Honduras.   All that should matter is results.

The narrative I don't want to hear is GGG apologists using Swag as some sort of excuse for a piss poor opening round.

Can you then please explain to me why he was not suspended for 2 games yesterday but that second game waited until today?

What was with the "iffy" talk last night?   Rules are rules.  If he broke one, I think they would have known yesterday if it was a 2 game suspension or a single game suspension.

I am dying to know this piece of information because I think it would help solve some of the puzzle for me.

Why do I get the feeling we’re going to get a bunch of stories on how GGG has lost the locker room.

And calling in Yueill is simply comical.

I said it earlier today that this is eerily similar to when JK got canned.

I would hate it but it would not shock me if the team quits on GGG to get him fired similar to the all time quit job the US did in CR last cycle which got JK fired.

We are already getting stories that some of the Euro vets were raising eyebrows at GGG tactics/coaching.

I don't...this is on the coach and US Soccer.
so you think every single player on the field has done well?    That seems absurd to me.

There is always plenty of blame to go around. You can't fire the players (well unless your name is Weston), so firing the coach makes the most sense should it come to that.

No new coach is suddenly going to make Dest understand how to play consistent defense or teach Sargent to be ruthless in the box, or teach Weston to be an adult.   Those items are on the players no matter how simplistic you want to make it because you hate the coach.

To be clear, hating the coach is fine, just don't bury your head in the sand on what responsibility the players need to take in this.

Pure guess that they just found out about it, and wanted to think it through and maybe talk to him about it before deciding how to handle it.

Pulisic said after the game that they found out early in the afternoon that Weston was suspended.  I think they had plenty of time to make a decision.

One positive item I can see for the new coach should it come to that, is we have by far the easiest window in qualifying next window.   It would be a chance for the new coach get some quick buy in from the players, whom ever he may be.

Jamaica at home

Panama on the road

Costa Rica at home

That should be a 7 point window.

Yep, this isn't the same Tico team...that should be an easy 7...at Panama winnable if we have our horses.

"Greg Berhalter's seat is already hot, he knows it comes with the territory.  Another poor result in Honduras combined with this Weston decision will only make it hotter....as it should.  Knives are out.  It's to be expected.  Now we will see what he and this team are made of."

I think 85% of coaches in the identical situation (poor start to a qualifying campaign they expected to go well) would be on the hot seat in any country.  I honestly would be shocked if he is not fire if they lose.

He won't get fired if they win.

I can't guess what will happed if we draw 3 in a row, it could go either way.

My guess is that Gregg wanted to focus on the game at hand first and figure out the third game later after reflection.   And maybe another stress-jog.

I can't imagine what Weston did to warrant a 2 game suspension. To me, in a vacuum, that seems like Greg cutting his nose to spite his face.

But of course, we dont know the details. And the way Landon was talking, I imagine it was really bad. But still, 2 games....in THESE circumstances?

These seems like a scenario where a veteran leader would step in and say "F that, one game is enough. We need him". Unfortunately, this group doesn't really have that guy. Can't imagine Brooks doing it and everyone else over like 23 year old is a role player at best.

Breaking quarantine -- when it could risk the entire team being able to compete -- would be plenty bad by itself.  There are lots of reasons they might have waited until after the game.  No conspiracy theories needed.

I am not following.  Are you referring to the "iffy" part of why they waited a full day to announce the second game?
Yeah…the only way this makes any sense on the less serious “the team is not in disarray”, is if there was some edict of “you break protocol, you’re going home no matter what” and GGG was just making sure that’s what they really 100% wanted to do.  My guess is that isn’t the case though.

Except you’ve just made it a 2 day story, at a minimum.

Bringing in Yueill is a fireable offense.  Give anyone else a chance. He's a liability.

What went from excitement a few days ago has turned into the biggest ####show. And it's not even about the points dropped.

"I" didn't do ####.  Weston McKennie did.

People turning it on Berhalter because they don't like him would be bush league IMO.
It gets turned on GGG since he’s mismanaged every aspect of this window that he has had some control over.

and GGG or USSF prolonged this story by not simply cutting the cord yesterday.

Yueill's call up is an absolute joke but the only reason I am not spending any of my dwindling patience on it because I think there is close to a 0% chance he sees the field.

And IMO it all about the points dropped.  Keep everything else the same and we have 6 points in the bag and we are all just laughing at the cluster #### instead of being angry at it.
