US Men's National Team (4 Viewers)

Efrain Alvarez, Alex Mendez, Uly Llanez

At one time a few years ago, I had hopes that these three players would usher in a new wave of Hispanic players to the National team. All three have significantly under-performed expectations.

Alvarez is a late game sub in Liga MX. Mendez scratches out some sporadic playing time in Portugal and Uly never dresses.

Mendez seemed to take a step finally late last year but he's sort of disappeared since.

It really goes to show what a disaster LAG's youth system has been. Can't wait til SD gets going because we can't have that region of the country continue being a black hole.

All game, he's been able to just skip past the first guy and cut inside. They usually have 2 or 3 there to defend him. And when he's gone wide, he's beating his man to the line and putting great balls across that the attacking players arent getting to.

This is two games in a row now where he is starting to get that feel of "lock down Pulisic"

When he is confident and healthy, he can be so good.

Loved the 6:15 ET PSV game this morning. Dest played the full game and played fine (nothing spectacular while i was watching, but solid defense). He started at LB, but moved over to RB almost immediately due to an injury.

Tillman came in around the 60th minute with the game scoreless and created a number of opportunities, including getting the hockey assist on the first goal.

Pepi didn't get on the bench, but I think was because they were clinging to a 1 goal lead at the point in the game where he usually comes in. I think he would likely have been used in almost any other situation (losing or tied because they need a goal, 2+ goal lead because they're not as worried about killing time)

They are in as good a spot as possible in early September. Still a perfect 14-0-0

Beating the second place team today, on the road, puts them in the incredible spot of already being 10 points up on second place.

Balogun went 74 minutes today before subbing out with Monaco nursing a 1-0 lead against 10 man Montpellier. If Monaco hold on to the win, they will remain in 3rd place, 6 points off the league leader PSG.

It's so quick it's hard to know how much influence he's had, but Earnie certainly appears to be crushing it.
I do not know what his exact responsibilities are but there have been some good things happening since he was named director.

The team completed the big sale of Sangare to Forest which helped fund some of their buys.

They picked up locked in starters in Dest(loan), Schouten and Chucky. They also added Lang and Tillman (loan) who have had good contributions and decent minutes. Pepi is not getting many minutes but has still found a way to contribute.

PSV also hired their new coach this summer, which to date obviously seems to have been a good choice.

As a midfielder as well. Played a B2B role, basically. Did not know he had that in him.
Do you know if the position change was due to filling in for an injury need or if coach was trying something new?
No idea. Only parroting the position information from tweets/reddit.

I'll ask the really intriguing question. Can he play the 6?

There have been many players who have transitioned from CB to DM in both directions. Richards certainly seems athletic enough for the 6 as well as being a decent passer.

Since it appears to have gone very well, I hope he can get more chances in the midfield as we could use another strong 6 to support Adams especially with his injury history.

Exactly my thoughts. We need another 6. A CB playing 8 in the PL, might be perfect transition to 6 long-term. Richards is also quite a bit bigger than Adams (and Musah). Would be nice to have some size in MF on occasion.

He is a US/German dual nat. Currently playing for Germany's U21 side. He is a lb.

Venues and dates/times for the Copa '24 came out today:

How is it that both Kansas Cities (Missouri and Kansas versions) get venues but Chicago and the entire upper Midwest is shut out once again?

US has group games in Atlanta, Kansas City, MO (Arrowhead) and Arlington TX (Jerry's World).

I thought Mussah was a lot bigger than Adams. Not CB big, but a good size for a midfielder. He's not Xavi, Iniesta, or Modric size.

Here's a picnod Mussah and Adams. He's got at least 2 inches on Adam's and likely 10-15 lbs.

I can't remember. Has it been confirmed that Atlanta (and the other turf fields) will convert to grass for the Copa?

Not to mention DC, BMore, and Philly. The only stadium on the list on the east coast is in NJ. 3 in Texas and 2 in KC? Da Eff?

In an ironic way this is I guess a good thing.

The country is so big and the sport has spread to almost every nook and cranny of the country that there are always going to be stadiums (and areas of the country) left out of any tournaments and feel slighted by it.

OK got it. A DM doesn't need to be big or tall. I think the key is "game sense" and "football IQ" which Adams has in spades. Kyle Beckerman would have been the greatest DM the US had ever had if he didn't have concrete in his shoes.

I agree he does not have to be big or tall. I think @Poke_4_Life was just saying a big 6 could give us a different look and feel from what we normally look like.

And I don't think anyone is suggesting a healthy Adams needs to be replaced, we are just acknowledging that his injury history is not great and having another strong option behind him would be nice.

I don't know if there was some carry over into Copa but Chicago pulled their bid for the World Cup.

=====================================

Mayor pulled the city out of the bid, but I don't know if specifics were made public outside of this:

"FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk," the statement said. "The uncertainty for taxpayers, coupled with FIFA's inflexibility and unwillingness to negotiate, were clear indications that further pursuit of the bid wasn't in Chicago's best interests."
