US Men's National Team (21 Viewers)

If you take my take on the first team (Trusty/Berhalter/Tillman), and don't reuse anyone, what does the SECOND XI look like in the exact same formation?

......................................................Turner (who the **** knows because Poch only plays Freese)

.............................Miles..........McKenzie.........Ream

.....Weston...................Tessman........Roldan....................Arfsten

.......................................Zendejas..........................Reyna

..............................................................Haji (or Pepi but as pointed out Pepi may have been the second biggest loser in this camp to Pepi).
Sorry, but I don't see any world in which Luna is not in the squad at all (which is what this 2nd XI sort of implies)

Luna has the most caps of any player this year. He is the kind of gritty, passionate, player that Poch likes.
It is a 26 man roster. A second 11 only gets you to 22 players. There are still 4 more players who would make it and I think Luna will be one of them.

I've watched this thread incorrectly support Berhalter for years.

I have now watched this thread be incorrectly overly critical of Poch. (until recently perhaps)

What's it like for this thread to collectively always be wrong about the USMNT coach and who is the one brave soul that has always been right?

I might put Weah in for Weston there, not sure McKennie covers enough ground to play a true two-way wingback.

Which kind of points out his problem in my mind. He's super versatile and skilled (and a very very good player!) but if the roles are hyper defined he might not be your best option anywhere.
yes, excellent call on Weah. The depth is so large right now, I kind of forgot about him.

Weston does play that exact role a lot for Juventus but then again he has played almost every role in his career so that is not saying much.
Fwiw, Swag has been more of a 10 or wide MF for Juve. I haven't seen him playing deeper as a 6 as much if at all.
Not as a 6 but he has played the wide role in the 4 man midfield numerous times for Juve.
Sorry... I was still reading as if we were talking about DMFs, not Weahs role you were clearly discussing.

If I had to predict Poch's 26 man WC roster today (assuming full health)......

GK- Freese, Turner and a 3rd that really doesn't matter (If I had to guess, I'd say Schulte)
Wingbacks- Dest, A-Rob, Arfsten, Weah
CB's- Richards, Ream, McKenzie, Freeman, Miles, Banks
MFs- Adams, Weston, Berhalter, Gio, Luna, Roldan, Aaronson, Tessman
F- Balo, Pepi, CP, Haji, Tilman
I think you are pretty close to my thoughts on this. While I'd like to see Banks get the experience for future years the fact Poch hasn't called him in yet I don't think he is in the plans. I'd say 5 CB's and maybe add Zendejas in to the Forwards. I also think Pepi or Agyemang is too close to call. Pepi missing that give me and then not hustling after it just looks like the typr of thing to get you in Poch's dog house.

The good of the 26 man is that there should be room for Gio.
The bad is there should be room for Aaronson, Berhaulter and Roldan.

The one time I saw Zendejas I thought he should be included.
But I also thought after my first viewing that Luna should to, sadly IMO he has regressed since then. I know I am alone when I say the more I see of Luna at the USMNT level the less I am impressed. Outside of the goal I saw numerous giveaways, poor tracking back on defense, wandering around the center of the park doing not much. I admit I haven't watched as much as the rest of you, especially in the MLS, and I want to like him. Heck I want to like and be excited for all the USMNT players regardless of where they play (Yeah Eurosnob). Just not seeing it with Luna. YET.

Banks has been called by Poch and was in camp recently. He did not play though.

Ive been with you about Luna.

Like everybody, I love his upside- great skills, vision and moxy to try stuff.

The downside gives me pause though- he doesnt seem up to the physical nature of bigger international teams. Winning space and the ball in traffic, defending much of anything other than being an Aaornson-lite as a heel nipper. I dont like how easily opponents bounce past him physically or off the dribble. I think his runs suffer a bit from wanting to be THE guy (which i love) and choosing the run or space one of his teammates takes... which will improve from a better relationship and understanding with his teammates over time.

I still have big hopes for him, but for now think he should be down the pecking order and used as a roll the dice on attack sub

Holy crap has Poch had it with the media. They can't stop asking him about his "regular players" that were not here. He went on a rant on the very first question and then the next question asked almost the same thing in a different way and Poch said he was going to leave the press conference if this continued.

Then a Spanish speaker tried to explain it in another way and Poch lost it. He asked if the US lost this game 5-1 and who were these regular players everyone keeps asking about.

I swear he is going to roster like 7 players no one expects just to spite them.

This is as unhinged as I have seen him.
Honestly, I get it. He's trying to build a team and culture where everybody is accountable 100% of the time. Calling guys effectively "non-regular" undercuts that totally. He needs every person in that locker room thinking they are fighting for a spot whether that's starting or being 23/26. Instead of asking what the team did right, in a performance we haven't had since some of the Dos a Zero Mexican games, they effectively ask him to split up the locker room; something he's been preaching not to do.

And I can almost guarantee his response well well received by the players.

I think re Poch comments, the wuestions and answers should be more general about overall player pool and selections rather than getting sidetracked into semantics of who's a "regular".

Eg... Youve got a bunch of MFs who are producing for the team...do you have sense of where theyre all fitting relative to each other and final selections? Have you had those conversations with the players so they know what they need to do better or xontinue to work on to break into the final group?

Poch is likely going to be my favorite USMNT coach ever.

I just like the cut of his jib.
I did like how pissed he was giving up a goal being up 4-1 on a Uruguay team with his B squad.
I hope they show that halftime talk on the next Behind the Crest. He was livid. It was so stupid to give up after a near perfect half of soccer so I can see his frustration. I am sure the players were all upset as well.

I do wish we had better options at GK. But I also think Jordan Pickford is objectively below the standard of England goalkeepers historically, and England is still in their best run of international form in at least 50 years with Pickford being their GK pretty exclusively. It's just a weird position. I feel that a lot of GK are competent shot stoppers and you just don't know which one will have a brain fart in any given game. I wouldn't have picked Emi Martinez to be the GK to get Messi his World Cup either. And yeah, Pickford and Martinez are both better than Freese, sure. But I think a lot of teams will JAGs in goal for the World Cup.
But Emi is a world class mind ****er. Which might be the most important quality for winning a penalty shootout.

Penalty shootout is the one situation where Freese has been tested and passed with flying colors for USMNT. It's everything else that I'm concerned about.

Here is Poch's full speech to the team after the game ended. This was before he lost it at the press conference. And you can see why he was so frustrated at the press conference based on this speech.

=====================

I don't envy Poch.

For months and months, the "big name" players on the US did nothing but infuriate and disappoint him, whether it was through their less than professional actions in training or poor quality in games or begging out of games and entire tournaments for various reasons.

And then Poch throws together for the last 6 games, what could at best be termed rag tag rosters, made up primarily of the non big name players and we have just been through arguably the best 5.5 game stretch of friendlies I have seen since the early 90's (I have watched well over 99% of the games the US have played in this time period if it was telecast).

I don't know what he is going to do. Does he go with the less fancy names that clearly have played better on the pitch and are creating the culture he really wants or does he go back to the more talented players in the hopes they finally get it?

It would not shock me if it was a fairly big mix. If he chooses the "regular" players specifically for the March games and the team returns to the dreary play, I bet he may have to make some serious decisions for the final roster, which I believe is due after those 2 games are played.
