US Men's National Team (10 Viewers)

This is the second "oh oh" of the day.  I hope it is the last :(

==================

From a German reporter (translated)

In the last few days I am always asked what is going on with Haji Wright. I honestly don't know. He wasn't there at the U23 photo shoot, I haven't seen him at the pros, i've seen him maybe imagine 🤷‍♂️ him somewhere else
Sorry to say I gave up on him- just hasn't made the jump from dominating youth to pros. If something materializes from him, great...but not holding my breath. Him and Kieswetter both.

I know what you are saying and agree with it.

Although the comparison may not be right.  Kieswetter is already 26.  He is pretty much done with top flight soccer as he plays in the USL now.

I hope there is more to Wright's story as he just turned 21 a couple of months ago.

It is probably a sign of progress that we can look at a player at 21 and determine that he might not be good enough internationally, where as not that long ago a player that age was still playing college ball.

very weak PK call in favor of Mexico IMO

That was my Boo Hiss.  Awful call.

Mexico was the better team, but I came away very impressed with Haiti's defense.  They played out of their minds and almost pulled it off.  I watched a bit of the after show and those guys left it all on the field and some were pretty emotional about what might have been.

If they play like that during WC qualifying they have a real shot.

from a general human perspective, I hope the incredible effort that team gave can get some of those players into better teams (more pay etc).  I love to see effort like that rewarded.

I didn't get to see Haiti play this GC, but sounds like they did themselves proud and like you say, may be a force in wcq.

Conversely, we have to remind ourselves that this is MExs 2nd team at best, missing guys who are true stars for top teams.

I'm really hoping history flips and repeats. I saw the US b team grind their way to a gc final vs Mex, with hopes that they could hang in there...nope.

The thing with Mexico, is that outside of scoring, you would never know this is their B team.  They are playing with an incredible amount of offensive speed and confidence (both of which I think comes from Tata).

But they definitely look vulnerable defensively.  If the US do meet them in the final, I think the best chance they have is to absorb pressure and hit on a counter through Pulisic.  If they try and match them and give them space, it could get ugly.

I should acknowledge that the US has a history of playing up or down to its opponents.

I am not expecting it to happen but if they some how played with the same effort they showed in the second half of the last game, they will not only get blown out, I think the calls for Berhalter's head will get deafening from the fan base.

Same reporter clarified, this time in English to make himself clearer

Whoa hold on... nobody said he is missing as in they don't know where he is. He just was not seen by me at neither the pro training nor the U23 photo shoot. I want to be perfectly clear on this: he's not disappeared, no breach of contract or anything like that

looks like 4 changes in the lineup tonight

Lineup notes from US Soccer

====================================

Starting XI Cap Numbers (including this match): Michael Bradley (149), Jozy Altidore (114), Tim Ream (34), Jordan Morris (32), Christian Pulisic (30), Paul Arriola (27), Matt Miazga (16), Zack Steffen (14), Weston McKennie (13), Aaron Long (10), Reggie Cannon (5)

Tonight’s Starting XI has an average age of 25 years, 171 days and 40 caps.

USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter makes four changes to the starting XI, inserting defenders Reggie Cannon and Matt Miazga along with forwards Jozy Altidore and Jordan Morris.

Starting XI Gold Cup Cap Numbers (including this match): Bradley (24), Altidore (12), Morris (10), Arriola (9), Ream (8), Pulisic (5), Long, McKennie and Zimmerman (4 each), Miazga (3), Cannon (2)

Tim Ream captains the USMNT for the second time in his international career. He previously wore the armband in the USA’s 1-0 win against Ecuador this past March on a night when Berhalter became only the second coach in team history to begin his tenure with three straight wins.

Michael Bradley makes his 24th Gold Cup appearance, tying Clint Dempsey for second on the USMNT’s all-time tournament caps list.

Seven players in the starting XI have contributed either a goal or assist in the tournament so far: Pulisic (1 goal, 3 assists), Arriola (2 goals, 1 assist), Long (2 goals), McKennie (1 goal, 1 assist), Morris (2 assists), Altidore (1 goal), Bradley, (1 assist).

Arriola makes his team-leading 10th appearance of 2019.

Just four players in the starting lineup appeared in the 1-0 defeat to Jamaica on June 5 in Washington, D.C.: Arriola, Miazga, Ream and Steffen.

Three players have previously scored against Jamaica: Altidore (3 goals), Morris (2) and Bradley (1).

Altidore and Morris scored in the last Gold Cup meeting with the Reggae Boyz, a 2-1 victory in the 2017 final on July 26, 2017 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Making his second start of the tournament, Altidore also returns to the same stadium where he became the youngest USMNT player to record a hat trick, with the then 19-year-old scoring all three goals in a 3-0 World Cup Qualifying win against Trinidad & Tobago on April 1, 2009.

The USA comes into tonight’s match on a team-record nine-game winning streak in Concacaf Gold Cup play (July 12, 2017-June 30, 2019).

The USMNT also rides a 414-minute shutout streak, having last conceded a goal in the 36th minute of the June 9 match against Venezuela.

The USA is 15-3-8 all-time against Jamaica and 4-1-0 in Gold Cup play.

The winner of tonight’s match will face Mexico in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Final on Sunday, July 7 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

God that’s ugly.

God that’s ugly.
on paper here is how I see the changes.  How it plays out is anyone's guess

*Cannon is a slight down grade replacing Lima.

*Miazga, at worst, is a push replacing Zimmerman.  It could be an upgrade

*Morris is down grade from Boyd (at least Boyd from the first 2 games, not Boyd in the last game)

*Jozy should be an upgrade from Zardes.

Defensively I’m not nearly as down on Cannon as everyone else is.

Offensively it’s obvious he attended the same crossing school as Yedlin.

I am nervous as well.

He tries to get forward, so we can only hope that something comes of it tonight.  He has no choice really of trying because Ream, by design rarely gets into the final 3rd.

I am not a big fan of unbalanced attacks.  I think they are too easy to scheme against.

I don't know Cannon, but I agree with the rest. I hope Boyd gets in early. For Bradley, preferably.

no coach in the Gold Cup has tried to exploit it but getting Leon Bailey isolated on Ream would consume much of my pregame tactics if I were coaching Jamaica.

Junior Flemmings (#12) is starting for Jamaica Caribbean Rising tonight against our boys. Here's hoping he doesn't think it's dollar beer night.

JFC how do you not Score there 😂

Nipples with horrible instincts / first touch

Damn.   We could/should be up 3 or 4 right now.  Playing great soccer.  Terrible time for a delay.  Great for Jamaica though.

Luckily the sheltered stadium areas will easily accommodate the number of fans. Actually they probably will all join the Jamaicans in their locker room.
