US Men's National Team (12 Viewers)

Here's a pretty good Miazga interview.  It clarifies his story on the ####-show in Nantes.  He seems to be doing pretty well.  Has a huge game Saturday in the Championship relegation battle.   http://www.americansoccernow.com/articles/after-a-rough-ending-at-nantes-miazga-eager-to-help-reading-to-safety
I posted this earlier in the thread before I buried it with dumb trivia :)

I was a very nice article.   It does sound like a complete #### show at Nantes.  If they really did make up the story that he was faking his injury, that is really awful.

so what did we learn today boys and girls?

leave your American in and take a lead late into game against world power.  Sub your Yank and cough up two goals to flush 3 points down the drain.

Christian Pulisic suffered a muscle fibre tear in his hamstring in the match vs. Spurs and will miss the matches against Nuremberg and Leverkusen.
maybe its just best at this point to assume we are never going to see Pulisic, Adams and Weston play together :(

INJURY NEWS: Weston McKennie will have a MRI scan to determine the seriousness of a possible thigh injury he picked up against Manchester City yesterday. McKennie was subbed off at the 78th minute

I had a disturbing thought today.  I believe since I started to follow the national team closely in the late 80's, this has been my longest stretch of time where I have not seen a competitive (ie non friendly) game.

Reading the reddit comments from guys watching the game..... :sadbanana:
he was not good.  you can't sugar coat it.  He did nothing that makes me think he gets another shot in the return leg, but we will see.

Sargent was a mixed bag today.  He played 60 minutes and saw very little of the ball and not once in a dangerous situation.  Of the few times he touched the ball, his hold up play was good and passing was crisp.

FIFA has pulled the U-17 World Cup from Peru. Slated to begin in October, FIFA will have to find a new host

I've stated in this thread that Sargent feels overrated and Weah underrated.  I haven't seen anything that disproves that these past few months.

My money would be on Weah having a larger impact this cycle.

just to make sure it is clear, the "He was not good..." comment has nothing to do with Sargent.  That comment was about Bello.

Weah's upside might be higher.

But I'd put Sargent higher than Weah now based on what I've seen of both. Both have great skills- touch, vision, ability to make the right runs, etc. But Weah switches off and makes the wrong play too much (this seems to have improved a lot in the last year, which gives me higher hopes for him) versus Sargent, who has always struck me as hugely consistent. Doesn't mean I, or anybody rates Weah lowly- the kid signed and played for PSG fer chrissakes.

Eta...the kid has always flashed amazing upside, but then flashed downside mistakes too much that heavily tempered my assessment of him...especially relative to Sargent who shows the upside and then just keeps on showing it. And I hate gingers. Well... I hate lalas. And they're pretty much the same, aside from the soccer playing abilities.

Hello, exactly!!

As for Sargent, I just don't see it.  Perhaps I'm watching the wrong games.  He seems to lack quickness and ball skills.  He seems to have good timing, grit and smarts, but at the end of the day against elite competition a player is going to need more.  I think yesterday's performance is indicative of what you'll see from him against elite competition...non-factor.  He'll look great against Trinidad, but against Mexico or other, more meaningful competition he just won't matter.

Weah on the other hand has the upside to be the man of the match against elite competition...I LOVE his upside.

I agree he seems to lack some quickness.

In terms of his technical skills (trapping, passing, shooting, shielding, etc), they rate out very high for me.

Lets just hope that both he and Weah progress because we are going to need both of them.

Sure, I'm not rooting against him.   And I think we need pieces like him to get through CONCACAF qualifying, I'm just trying to be realistic about his long term contribution.

I pull for all of these kids.

Looks like we have Fab and Brooks coming on in a few hours!

CCV, Miazga and Yedlin* all starting.

Haji made bench while Weston is hurt for Schalke.

*While not directly US Soccer related, Almiron starting today has some possible knock on effects for MLS.

sounds like Brooks had a good game today in front of Berhalter.  I have not read either way about Fab.

Speaking of Brooks, I thought this tweet was funny :)

It’s real simple with Brooks: are you playing a top 25 country in the world? Play him. Are you playing anyone else? Sit him

Seeing the attention Berhalter is getting in Germany from the German media made me remember that he has ties to the German system.

I had forgotten that he had almost 200 appearances in Germany and captained two different teams.

With so many of our young players in the German system, it is useful that our coach speaks the language fluently and is very familiar with things over there.

I'll take Brooks at face value...less concerned with how he performs vs. TnT.
