lol- now I want to see this. I was commenting more about his style of play, which seems like its been as much about getting under the defender's skin than making good runs and scoring goals (which he does too).

he had that look coming up through the yutes- confidence and ability to make things happen going forward, either with the dribble, pass or shot. hoping the trajectory maintains- I agree he feels like that #10 the US have needed, which would allow CP (if he ever stays healthy) to float to wherever he needs to float to get the ball more.

it is early in the season but Pomykal is now the highest ranked American midfielder in MLS according to whoscored so he is passing both the eye test and the stat test like Adams is in Germany.
Both Mendez and Pomykal have very different style games from Weston (who they will likely be competing with). I tend to have a bias towards players who have strong technique but I fear that makes me devalue Weston more than I should since he brings so many other things to the game.

I like swag a lot- but I've yet to see any finesse to his game. so far it's been great positioning, work, and good- not great- skills on the ball. he's got good vision and seems to combine well... can do it all, but has yet to strike me as a true creator the way Pomykal has shown (I have yet to really watch Mendez). I guess I'm saying I don't see swag and pomykal fighting for the same spot hopefully.

by the way, as an indicator of how fabulous RBL's signings were, they spent a grand total of $3m on players 4 and 5 on this list. One is 19 and one is 20 years old.

It might be two years away but it should give the option of putting Pulisic on the wing which is likely to be a massive upgrade over who ever is playing in that spot.
And shortly after Pomykal and Mendez, the next two in the midfield pipeline should be Reyna and Busio.

Worth noting Mendez was voted the best player in the U20 qualifying and that included a Mexican team loaded with players like Lainez. Pomykal was very good in that tournament but Mendez was the clear star.
Pomykal's break through this year has caught everyone's eye but Mendez is already starting to integrate into the Freiburg system. If he can break into the first team next fall, he is going to be another nice option.
Hopefully both Pomykal and Mendez get released for the U20 WC this summer.

He will have to improve that. All German teams emphasize strong two way play out of their central midfielders. He won't get by on luxury alone (and lets face it, very very few in the world do).

What does playing down mean?
I like Dest. I think he is the logical player to play at eventually play at RB and get Adams into the middle. If he gets released, he is going to be starting in the World Cup against some dynamite young players so we should get a really good read on him then.

There was a thread on US Soccer Twitter recently asking who you would pick if you could choose one USMNT prospect to maximize his talent. Brian Sciaretta said the answer was Nick Taitague and "it isn't even close." He's been injured so much we never see him, but apparently, those in the know think he's special. Hopefully, he can get some good luck. Not a CM, of course, but a real talent at wing where we're thin.

When this gaggle of players went over to Germany, it was Taitague that was pointed out as the player with the highest ceiling by almost everyone who followed the youth scene.
His injury history is against him at this point. It is not just one injury either, he keeps hurting different parts of his body for extended periods of rehab.

It is dubious, I agree. Dutch second division is on a lower level than MLS or Scotland Premier League IMO.
But its not like he is 23 years not able to break into a weak Dutch first division team. He is 18 not yet breaking into what is clearly a high quality team at Ajax.

The only thing that scares me a bit about Pepi is his physical maturity. He in no way looks like a kid that just turned 16. He has a pro strikers body already and I wonder if that makes him look better than he is and might be found out once every one else catches up physically.
As some one else mentioned, he is in a clear tug of war between US and Mexico. Hopefully he will play for the US in the upcoming U17 qualifiers.
Pepi, Bello, Reyna and Busio is a really nice group that team can be built around.

The goals in the hattrick didn't really tell the story this weekend. His hold up play and passing was very mature and slick. And he was playing against men. Normally, you worry a non-technical guy is getting by on athleticism or that a technical guy's lack of athleticism will hold him back (hi, Freddy Adu!). Pepi looks technical and he already looks ready to play against men at 16. Close the border, Trump!

Didn't get to see the holdup play, but loved what I saw there. The kid has great anticipation and awareness of the game. There was a "simple" (not so simple) one touch layoff to a runner he received and gave on the sidelines near midfield early on on that...the video moves on quickly, but we see he makes the one touch pass off and is immediately turning and sprinting down the line...all in one movement. Did that a couple more times here which along with some nice clean touches with intent (ball is going where he wants and into good/dangerous spots on the first touch or one time pass) and size/speed and hunger around the box.... I see the excitement. thanks

Conversely, (I don't know why your post brought it to mind) it'd be cool to see an all off-the-ball movement video where they're indirectly involved in the play. I realize TV doesn't help us there, but would be cool to see the dirty work being put in.

My favourite thing about seeing games live. Somebody has a tactical cam set up behind the goal, iirc. Fox? That works too. I just end up watching as much away from the ball on tv as possible... Hard to see the real work, but good for seeing some movement and tactical reactions. Also hard not to refocus back on the ball.
