US Men's National Team (20 Viewers)

gotta say, seeing him live- and I don't know if you ever got to do that- was something that gave me a lot more respect for him.
A few times.  He started vs Argentina in Copa semis. No one looked good that game tbf and he may have started vs Ecuador in a friendly in Dallas that same year. I remember being impressed by Darlington Nagbe that game so what do I know  :P

But your point is pretty valid of live vs just on tv

Tom Bogert

@tombogert

United States World Cup qualifying roster for October matches against Jamaica, Panama and Costa Rica will be announced tomorrow

Shouldn't be worried about this window, but I am.

Between the CP and Gio injuries and the issues with the English players in panama....I just have a bad feeling things could go south.

Sounds like Sands may be in play

Chris Smith

@CJSmith91

Looking forward to tonight's interview. #NYCFC/#USMNT fans, keep your eyes peeled in the coming days

This pretty cool. I have quoted this guy a ton for various US Soccer topics. Nice to see a fan turn his work to something he loves.

In a few weeks, I'm going to be taking an absolute dream role - leading the marketing team at the SJ Earthquakes. It's incredible to join one of the most storied teams in American soccer history. Being stoked is an understatement

that's awesome.

I always wonder what might have been if I had taken up a friend's friend who worked for MLS home office back in the late 90s.

Same with me.

I had a chance when I was 25.  Derek Rae (he was the designated press officer from FIFA) was willing to give me a job working at the Foxboro location for WC 1994, but the money was crap and I would have had to leave my high paying engineering job, which would have killed my parents.

Still, I think about it though because I know some of the people who worked for Derek moved directly into the Revolution setup the following year (including Derek himself who became the Revs first announcer).

I mean....if Greg DOESN'T call in some connectors (especially with Gio and Potential CP missing the window) I dont know what to say.

Not gonna pretend like I've seen Green or LDLT play in years, but they need another 8 that can transition defense to offense.  Lleget generally sends the ball the other way.

Agreed, Roldan/Lleget/Sargent have gotten plenty of minutes to prove that they're safe/average, maybe slightly above average on a good day. We should be reaching higher, give those minutes to someone else for a chance to prove they can increase the level of play of the whole roster.

absolutely.

it does raise the question of whether WCQ is the time for safe/average or the time to roll the dice.

but the players mentioned previously, like LDLT, have at least a bit of a track record- not like it's Caden Clark starting in Gio's absence.

what little I saw of LDLT his last couple runs iwth the USMNT over the last year- was it confed league? maybe friendlies?- I was surprised by how good he looked. super calm on the ball, and able to receive, turn and create positive space off the pass or dribble. surprisingly strong holding the ball too. granted, limited minutes- but lots of stuff that Lleget, as you say, only does occasonally when he's not passing the ball backwards or 5 yards square.

eta: I've always liked Green to a degree. haven't seen a super high ceiling from him, and haven't seen him actually play in a couple years.

That being said, a healthy Musah PROBABLY solves a lot of the defense--> offense issues we had in the last window.  As someone mentioned a few pages back, driving forward with the ball is his "super power".  McKennie helps as well.

Just frustrating that we're STILL not gonna see everyone in there at once. Thankfully we have the depth to cover. 6-7 years ago, if prime Bradley missed a game, there was NOBODY even close to the same level.

:goodposting:

and re: caillou- even at sub-prime, there was nobody close to replace him. which is a real indictment of the US depth, given his decline.

Roster for this window.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Sean Johnson (New York City FC; 9/0), Zack Steffen (Manchester City/ENG; 23/0), Matt Turner (New England Revolution; 10/0)

(adding notes from others here to have a summary -- see below)

No Horvath.

Adams recovers in time for the call.

Arriola and Zardes are in.

It's a big group overall with 27 call ups.

Still weird to see our depth.  Even with Pulisic and Gio out this is a strong group.

Konrad, Sarge and Pefok?  Out!

Scalley waits for his first call.

Just noticed Cannon is missing as well.

I don't have a problem leaving Scalley with his club.  Weird time to integrate him anyway.  Let him get the club minutes while they're there and maybe integrate him in later in qualifying when things have shaken out more.

Yeah, surprised Konrad is out (especially with CP also out). Surprised at no  Pefok as well.

Obviously knew they'd bring Gyasi

Moore over Scally seems like a poor move. I get that we haven't seen Scally with the senior team at all, but he can play both sides and is playing at a much higher level than Moore. But again, we know Greg doesn't like to experiment.

No Konrad or Prefok, considering their form, is seriously weird. I get no Sarge. Must be something GGGG saw in the last camp.

love seeing Zardoz back. Not sure about Nips- I think I'm one of his few fans, but how long has he been back from injury? I know he just scored a couple, but his injury history concerns me as a body in the mix for 3 games.

Happy to see Richards/Weah/Zardes/Musah

GGG might realize the job he got via nepotism is on the line now.

GGG has nobody to blame but hisself if this group doesn’t get results, but I’m sure he’ll find ways to blame the 20 year old kids if he has to.

and I like what I saw of Shaq this summer... but yeah.

There better be a good reason for this.

We have fielded teams much worse than the XI you can make with players who are NOT playing in this window:

Pulisic -- Pefok -- Sarge

Konrad -- Sands -- Gio

Scalley -- Long -- Zimmerman -- Cannon

Horvath

if 27 was the number, I'd bring Scally instead of Moore,  Konrad instead of Nips and Miazga (Zimm if he was healthy) over Ream.

Everything else...given what's available, I can live with. But Konrad not being there when they dont have CP or Gio is insanity.

As usual, agree here.

There better be a really good reason Konrad didn't get a call.

I didn't know Zim was out.

Miazga doesn't pass anywhere near as well as Ream. I have to assume that's why GGG brought Ream in- not as a tough, ball-winning CB. But a guy to situationally play if the US is on the front foot.

Assume back line will be:

Dest, Robo1, Brooks, Robo2

tbh, I'm ok with letting Dest replace CP or Gio and slotting Yedlin in for him at RB.

Konrad has never been anything special with the Nats, including against El Salvador in the last window.  He's had about five good games in Ligue Un.  I just don't see what makes him such a shocking exclusion.  Nips has the much stronger USMNT resume.  And Gregg has worked with both players and presumably knows what he wants.

I feel the same about Ream.  He's just been better than Miazga with the Nats, and frankly has at least as strong a club resume.  And he's a better fit for what Gregg tries to do because he's much better on the ball than Miazga.

To me, its more about the skill set. With CP and Gio both out, they're missing 2 of their better "break guys down" guys. Konrad brings that potential.
