US Men's National Team (6 Viewers)

Booth Senior started today - I think his first start since coming back from injury. Taken out at half...I assume that was planned in advance. I didn't watch, so no idea how he did. Looks like Aaronson Junior started against him.

Also, Paredes started at left back for Wolfsburg yesterday. I only watched for a few minutes, but thought he looked ok (nothing special). I think he hasn't been starting recently, so whatever gets him more minutes is probably a good thing.

Actually watching the replay (we were on the far side during that half) he had more space than I recall but was further out. I thought he was only a yard or so outside the 18 when he hit it, but he was much further back than that.

Commentators talking about how unhappy AC Milan fans are with the team’s performance. Aren’t they in second place?

Pretty good game from CP. nice assist on Giroud’s goal
wow, that was really nice. The burst to open up the cross window was excellent as was the cross itself

The assist ties Pulisic's career high of 7 league assists.

Was Musah hurt or suspended today? He did not dress from what I can see

McGlynn has a wide variety of European interest but champions PSV are a specifically named suitor. That would be a near-ideal move: a great developmental league but still strong enough to be a Top 6 League in Europe, playing with fellow Yanks , for a side that dominates possession.

PSV does have two central midfielders on the latest Netherlands MNT roster so McGlynn wouldn't be an auto-starter with this move. But with all of their competitions: Eredivisie, Champions League, multiple cups -- he'd still get plenty of minutes if earned, and he certainly has the talent.

I was expecting McGlynn to look younger and more out of place. For some reason I thought he was 18 still. He definitely looks the part of a pro midfielder.
How did his pace/quickness look live? On TV he comes across as a little slow... Quick of mind/action, but a little slow just getting to spots.

Of the guys who currently get playing time for PSV who are listed as midfielders...
Tillman - mix of attacking mid and wing. Clearly won't lose playing time to McGlynn
Til - pure attacking mid. Also won't lose playing time to McGlynn
Badabi - mix of attacking mid and wing. Just started playing recently and I haven't been super impressed, but he's 19 and I think highly regarded
Veerman - Seems like more of a defensive mid. Won't lose playing time to McGlynn
Saibari - Described as 'attacking mid' on wikipedia, but I think he's more of an 8. Won't lose playing time to McGlynn

That said, maybe not as crowded as it sounds, because they really only have two strong pure wings (Bakayoko and Lozano).

Ledezma could be among the guys who don't get much playing time now who could be in the mix as well.

No idea what anyone's contract situation is for next year.

I also remember, I think, that McGlynn was not engaging enough defensively when he was younger. I assume he has improved in this area but when I see highlights, they are only of the offensive variety.

Limited viewing on my part, but he struck me as a 10 more than an 8 or 6 because of that... Which limits his usefulness at the Sr level.

But I'm a fan of what little I've seen for the yutes and club- love his vision and touch feeding killer balls.. elite level. That he's also got these kind of goals in him.. hell yes. And as you say, if he's developed his defensive game as well, he could be a major part of this team. Not sure this PSV squad is the place to develop that for him, but would be cool to see him take a step up and see how he fits.

He was not super visible to be honest. Didn't stand out, certainly didn't control space. The Philly MF looked weak and had trouble in possession and transition. DC really controlled the game. The first half was particularly poor for Philly, but either DC backed off or Philly stepped up in the second half.

McGlynn wasn't a ball hawk and didn't close off passing lanes or control tempo. That's all stuff I'd want to see from an 8.

Great stat

Chris Richards' 40th-minute assist for Crystal Palace was the 46th assist by a #USMNT player in the top 5 European leagues this season. The only non-European countries with more are Brazil and Argentina

Don't have an in person perspective but in games I've watched this year, 4 to 5, McGlynn still is pretty invisible defensively. He has shown more burst than I remember in the past though so probably has been working on that. But I've only really seen it going forward. He's a really unique player because I don't think he's really a 10. Deep lying playmaker but nobody really has that any more.

Mcglynn can do the spectacular but I think he will struggle too much with the ordinary to force his way into a side like PSV at the moment. Hopefully he continues to grow.

Paredes has been out injured - he missed the last window due to it

I somehow missed or forgot that

Just saw the Mex forward with Feeynord linked to Milan. Yuck.
Lol.. and this afternoon Jonathan David being linked.

At least it's an all concacaf affair.
I think it's all just speculation at this point. Can't imagine they'll throw down $50M+ on a new striker before they choose a new coach.
So these arent pure facts before the window ha opened? Huh. I'll guess I'll have to take your word on that

One thing where I'm on a little bit of an island is that if a player anywhere other than a true 10 or a front-line player can't stop an attacking player 1v1 and be an effective part of a press I'm just not interested. Like I wouldn't put him on the field, or at least not as a starter.

So I'm down on players like Dest and (from the comments above) McGlynn, and don't really care what they can do going forward. They aren't forwards, so they have to be able to defend. IMO the margins are so small defensively that one weak link can cause the whole machine to break down. It just seems like small individual differences in defensive quality can cause the whole effort to unravel. It ends up looking like there's something wrong with the defense because they're constantly having the ball coming at them, but it's really just that the front 7 aren't slowing the other team down enough.

Maybe it's faulty reasoning, but my bias against players like this is strong and I cringe inside when I see them penciled into a lineup.

I get this stance, but respectfully disagree.

I think there's a limit to how "bad" of a defensive player you can get away with. (at some point.....a good coach is just going to attack a weak link over and over again until it breaks) But IMO (and my opinion is not very educated, so take it FWIW)......you can "game plan" a good defense at the highest level.

I mean....at the last WC, we shut out England with Walker Zimmerman and Dest as 2 of our 4 defenders. And its not like 19 year old Musah was Ngolo Kante out there. We had the right game plan...got a little lucky and it worked.

I think its MUCH harder to manufacture goals just with good strategy. (assuming the other coach isn't a total moron). You gotta have DUDES out there that can just make stuff happen.

Before Dest got hurt I was actually going to make a post wondering why we don't just play Dest at winger and Weah at RB.

I don't know soccer as well as most of you, but I honestly don't understand why Dest is a RB in the first place, and not a winger or somewhere in the attack.

I'd say his potential is similar to slightly higher than Pulisic's, but keep in mind that while Pulisic is a stud and arguably the USMNT's greatest player of all time.... he hasn't reached the potential many thought he had. As a 17 year old at Dortmund, there were many people thinking he was a future top 5-10 winger in the world, so that's where Sullivan's potential sits.

I was afraid of this but PSV has decided not to trigger the buy clause for Dest.

This leaves Dest with a long term injury under the guidance of a team who does not want him and a team Dest does not want to be with.

Pretty much worst case scenario.

The long run of middling injury’s Pulisic dealt with killed any momentum he had.

Had he been as healthy from 20-24 as he was this year, we may be talking about a legit top 30 level player instead of maybe top 80-100ish that he is now.

Not that I have any complaints to be honest. If we had 15 Pulisic level players at the various spots we would be a damn good team.

This is what Ernst Tanner said about him:

"He is one of the biggest talents on the globe. ... Cavan is a top 3 young talent I've seen in my 30-year career."

"I'd say comparatively he reminds me of signing Dominik Szoboszlai (at RB Salzburg)."

I have read other reports that PSV intend to bid on him in the winter when he is closer to health for what they hope will be a much cheaper price than what he would have cost now.

I think they'll try to work out a deal this summer, just at a price closer to what a 6 month contract left Dest is worth rather than the 11M Euro clause they had.

I'm sure they'd rather have him in team meetings and rehabbing at their facility to be able to monitor him if given the choice. I think a deal will get done.. it'll just be more in the 6-7M Euro range. I'm hopeful anyway.

I am not sure its for the best to rush but

Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin says the day 14-year-old Cavan Sullivan could make his MLS debut is 'a lot closer than people realize'

Should he debut before the end of July, he’d be the youngest player in American professional team sports history.
