US Men's National Team (32 Viewers)

American soccer needs to stop trying to be something we are not. We should be a direct playing kick ball type of team where we send that ball into the box and just create chaos there all day. This playing out of the back the "right way" has cost us our identity.
El Floppo makes a good point that the other teams have a say in this as well, but the thing I find baffling is that if there a few things more "American" than doing things in a way that other countries find strange or backwards. We're the land of more guns than people, 3000sf houses, and a sandwich that has fried chicken in place of the bread. We have a history of just shrugging our shoulders when people look askance at our way of doing things, so I'm not sure why we're so fearful of what people will think of the "style" of US Soccer.

Addendum : And I'm not necessarily endorsing any of the listed examples, just saying that we have a history of being willing to go against the grain.

The difficult part of this theory is that our players are being developed in professional environments from when they are 12. And then they are moving on to bigger and bigger leagues where the development and training methods are going to follow what ever the conventional wisdom is at the time.

If we were to differ from this we would not only need a coach that won't follow conventional wisdom but then you also have to hope that the 95% or more of your roster that has been trained in a certain way all their life can adjust with almost no practice time.

The sad thing is that once you allow 1 or 2 guys to pull out for meh reasons......how do you tell someone else that they have to play?

Yeah, in theory (as we've been arguing all along) everyone should be DYING to play. But that's not the reality, especially for someone like Dest who A) has a major injury history and B) if we're being honest....is only playing for us because the Dutch dropped the ball when he was younger.

Sure...he might stand out among a largely B-team attacking group....but he also might get the crap kicked out of him the entire tournament as other teams double and triple team him.

Dest is pretty much the most prissy little show pony we have. So it certainly doesn't shock me if he opted to take it easy rather than slum it with the (mostly) B team.

Union academy represent!

7 players on the roster from YSC
actually 8 I think. People forget Brian White was in the Union system for a while. Could have been 9 had Steffen not gotten hurt.

Both Aaronson's, McKenzie, McGlynn, Freese, Quinn, Harriel and White if I am correct looking at the roster.
Yeah, White (and I suppose Steffen to a degree) is from of the old Union hub-and spoke “academy” model as White was more a PDA guy that was Union-adjacent, like FC Delco and some other local academies.

The other 7 are from the current Union academy setup (Union youth teams, YSC high school etc).

Here is the full Gold Cup roster for those that can stomach it.

You know what I do like about this group? There will be no standing around waiting for Pulisic to do something.

That's not a negative comment about CP, just that often times in sports, when a superstar player is no longer around, the rest of the players step up.

Also, there are a few personal favorites still there:

Turner: never in consideration for an all time great US keeper, but to me he's mostly played above expectations and been the right keeper for the times.
Ream: proof that slow and steady wins the race.
Miles Robinson: glad he's still battling after injury redirected his trajectory.
Tyler Adams: the baby-faced assassin.

And I look forward to seeing Luna on an international stage.
I also want to see if Freeman is going to be in over his head AND if he really is the athlete that everyone says he is.

Z, would Cardoso actually be able to get minutes with Atletico? I'm with RHE on this one; it's like Pete Davidson's girlfriends -- just doesn't make any sense.
I keep saying there has to be stuff happening off the ball and off-camera at an elite level that none of can get unless we see him live. Because ON camera, he's fine and all, but not 40m to a typical la Liga contender fine.

I read Poch saying it was the staff that shut him down. Is there link that says Dest "opted out"?
I read it different from both of you.

I think Dest definitely wanted to play (he never would have come to camp other wise).
I think Poch was willing to try him out

My guess is that PSV reached out to Poch and begged him to let Dest move slower in his rehab this summer so that he could be full steam ahead come the fall.

40m is absolutely insane and I have to think that Betis are just trying to figure out how dumb AM are.

The 25m that was the original price Spurs wanted seems closer to what he should be, although even then, that 25 seems 5-7m on the high side.

Yeah... What I was thinking was some version of PSV + US deciding to shut him down- based on Pochs comment. I didn't see anything from that that suggested dest chose to bail, especially after accepting the callup

The Atleti central midfield is thin. DePaul is 100% locked in as a starter. But if playing with a 2 man central midfield, there's another open spot. Koke got hurt last season and has lost a step. Conor Gallagher never cemented a place, but got some minutes. Barrios picks up stupid cards although everyone thinks he's the future there at 21 years old and Simeone seems to rate him. So there will be rotation minutes if Johnny is willing to put in the work in training. Simeone values dedication to the cause and willingness to put the team first. That's why Lemar doesn't play. That's why Joao Felix got the boot.

I could even see him playing central in the 4-3-3 with De Paul and Gallagher along side.

So I think he'd get some minutes but he's not an obvious starter IMO.

I woke up today and thought to myself, "maybe I will take a ride down to Connecticut today and watch the game live. How bad can ticket prices be?"

Over $70 for the worst seats in the house for a friendly against a non big name team when the US is missing almost its entire starting lineup.

TNT for me I guess.

Couldn't drum up any interest from my buddies to go see this one... Also smack in the middle of 2x graduations and typical end of year school stuff, so it's a crazy time

Big Pat played Division 3 college soccer at Eastern Connecticut. Today is kind of a home coming for him.

The amount of players who started in Div 3 and made it all the way to the USMNT has to be tiny.

That's BRUTAL. Gotta think the place is gonna be 60% full at best.

You guys may remember Dante Sealy. He was a promising player in our youth ranks. He has represented the US at U16, U17 and U20 levels. He went to the Netherlands but never broke through into PSV's first team.

He came back to MLS where he has played for both Dallas and Montreal. Nothing special in his play unfortunately but still just 22 years old.

His dad is Scott Sealy, a long time MLS players and former T&T international. Dante was recruited by and accepted a call up to T&T and scored a brace in his debut yesterday in a WCQing game for T&T.

I always watch. And I try to come up with my favorites. But I'm also realistic. I don't fret about Pulisic not being there because I think talk about Christian Pulisic--who is a very good professional soccer capable of playing on a top 25 club team in the world--being America's Messi is completely insane. Every decent soccer nation in the world has to deal with the reality that if you produce a player capable of consistently starting in a top 5 league, you run the risk of that player being ground down to dust by the end of the season.

So the Pulisic and Jedi stuff, and even Dest missing doesn't bother me much. I'll miss Dest because he's fun, but I kind of agree that the Gold Cup isn't important enough to put a lot of minutes on him when he's just back from a major injury, particularly when so much of the first team is already missing so he wouldn't really be building cohesion.

The things that hurt for me are when you realize a player has missed his window to reach his potential. That hurt for me with Eddie Johnson. And it really hurts for me with Gio Reyna. Because I honestly believed he had the highest ceiling of any American player I've ever seen. The plus side of this is that we do get to see guys like Luna, Sullivan, and McGlynn and try to figure out if their skillset will translate at a higher level.

We need to support who's there and stop fretting about who isn't.
Not really fretting for me... Just hard to be too invested or interested if most of this team won't see the field next year.

No opportunity to see how starters gel, what Poch is trying to get out of them collectively, shape wise, etc.. etc. this is just yet another exercise in watching individual players to see if any of them elevate.

All we have for the A team is a year of underperforming. And now we get essentially another camp cupcake.

60% full would be amazing IMO given the circumstances and how little this current time line of USMNT has interested the fan base.

I think the place holds 36k.

EJ figured it out late. His early off the field issues (which has long be rumored to be a drug addiction) coupled with at the time MLS having almost no knowledge of how to handle young talented players in a professional environment was not a good marriage.

Had EJ come up today in the FC Dallas system, it might have been a totally different career path for him. Sadly, after he figured things out, his window was so short because of the heart problems.

I have absolutely no idea how to think about Reyna. It is impossible not to watch highlights like these when he was so young at Dortmund and wonder how it all fell apart so badly. Look at the things he was doing as a teenager!

It'll be interesting to see. Tri-state don't get the US much, so hopefully they get a turnout. Only game I saw there was a WCQ game vs... TNT? Packed for the US (of course... Qualifying <> friendly vs turkey w/out starters). I'm sure every Turkey-yay! Fan in the area will be there and loud

Is there a decent size Turkish demographic in NY? If so that would certainly help ticket sales.

Ticket sales that are specifically to see the US play may be at a low we have not seen since the 90's. The combination of lack of interest and high ticket prices is not a good mix.

Turkey has some star power on its team. Should be fun to watch and will test our younger guys.

NYC has a decent sized **fill-in-the-blank** population to get big numbers to support their national teams

Looks like Luna and Tillman on the wings. Neither are natural wingers.

Not a lot of bite in that midfield. Hopefully some one gets in McGlynn's ear that the game has both and offensive and defensive side of it.

We may learn quite a bit about Freeman today. What a huge opportunity for him.

You have to go all the way back to May of 2003 to find a starting line up with this many current MLS players in it for a non January camp game against an UEFA opponent.
