US Men's National Team (30 Viewers)

I am definitely getting too old. I think this is the 4th such program I have seen from US Soccer over the years

U.S. Soccer unveils “Pathway Strategy” — a unified national plan with MLS, NWSL, USL and major youth orgs onboard. The goal: cut youth costs, simplify development and produce world-class players, with input from Arsène Wenger and over $125M/yr in MLS free-to-play investment.

Posting because this is a name that has been bandied about as a successor to Poch next summer

Sources: Celtic finalizing deal to name Wilfried Nancy their next manager. 1st reported in Scotland, confirmed by
@brimackay15 too. Columbus Crew will get compensation. Now, Crew need to find new head coach.
I saw the news about Celtic but know nothing about him as coach, only as a player.

How was he at Columbus? Any particular managerial traits, tactics?

I am too lazy to type so here is an AI summary..take with grain of salt

----------------------------------

Wilfried Nancy's coaching style is characterized by an aggressive, possession-based system he calls "Nancy Ball," which is both proactive and bold. Key principles include tactical flexibility, empowering players with freedom and clarity, and a strong focus on player development and creating a winning mentality. His teams are known for skillful possession, intricate passing, attacking flair, and a proactive defensive approach.

Core principles
  • Possession and attack:
Nancy prioritizes keeping the ball, using it to control the game, and creating scoring opportunities through skillful build-up play.

  • Clarity and purpose:
He emphasizes that every player action, both attacking and defending, must have a purpose. Players are trained to understand their roles clearly, which promotes unity and efficiency.
  • Tactical flexibility:
While he favors a possession-based style, his teams are tactically adaptable and can switch formations or adapt to situations as needed, often using a 3-4-2-1 formation.
  • Proactive defense:
His defensive philosophy is proactive, focusing on winning the ball back quickly after losing it. The team is also set up to "lure" opponents into traps.

look at the range of difficulty for the US based on the draw

vs

US - Morocco - Norway - Italy

Same.

Fun fact: I went to the Project 2010 presser in person (1998) and then got to hang out on the field at RFK while the USWNT practiced (or maybe pre-practice?).

2002 me was convinced we were on our way. Now I am old and jaded, and am convinced we may not actually be any closer than we were ~25 years ago.

Quite a UCL window for our players

Weston scores in a win, away in the tundra
Weah assists in a win
Tillman was involved in the build up of both goal in a win at Man City
Pepi and Dest both playing against Liverpool, both involved in goals in an away win
Balogun with another goal in a draw.

Liverpool are on a bad run.
I'm sure they want to wait as long as possible, but I don't see how Slot ends up surviving this. He's getting less than zero out of absolutely top-of-the-world class players. They're not all that dangerous, they can't defend at all, they're making all kind of crazy mental mistakes, the substitution pattern is basically Hail Mary game-chasing stuff. It's really really bad.

PSV are winning games in holland, but they've looked less than convincing. Kinda shocked they neat liverpool, even in their bad run.

Tessman went 90 in a 6-0 win in Europa League
Trusty went 90 in a 3-1 win in Europa League
EPB went 90 in a 2-1 win in Europa League
Richards went 45 (subbed in at half time) in a 2-1 loss in Europa League

Note: All 4 players above played CB today as Tessman shifted to RCB from his normal DM position, in a 3 man back line.

Cole Campbell has apparently handed in a transfer request to Dortmund. He wasn't very impressive in the U20 World Cup but clearly has some big skills. IMO he would benefit greatly from playing time against good players. It's hard to improve when the guys you go up against just aren't that good.

but clearly has some big skills.
I...uhhh... He does?
Yes. He's one of the fastest guys in the BL. He has good dribbling skills that allow him to move at pace with the ball.

He makes really bad decisions. He never uses his off foot making him incredibly predictable. He doesn't pick his head up. His in game intelligence - or lack thereof - resulted in him not performing. These are things that can improve, especially with playing time. It doesn't mean it will, but it can.

He was disappointing and underwhelming for the US for all the reasons you said (and we discussed in real time during the WC) and especially because i think most of us were expecting big things.

But yeah, i saw some qualities- combo of explosiveness and skills, plus desire to be the guy... Hoping more PT cleans up the decsision-making
