US Patent Office Cancels Redskins Trademark (1 Viewer)

South Park wasting no time here:

Although I think most folks won't understand the issues surrounding Washington able to use the name but not have it trademarked.
At least 90% of what I read from non-local media (and even quasi-local media like Politico) gets that issue wrong. Drives me nuts.

And I like South Park and can't wait to watch the episode, but it relies on the same incorrect understanding.

From the guy's who spent an entire episode on the fact that word's meaning can change over time and and that people shouldn't be offended so easily. Remember the episode where the kids all call the harley rides ######s (rhymes with maggots)? In that episode they pet ion the dictionary to change the word because it isn't used the way it used to be. Kind of like how Redskins means a football team.

Don't they also defend the use of ######ed (rhymes with refarted)?

What to you is the issue and how does media get it wrong?

:lmao:

This is possibly the silliest of the many silly defenses of the name I've heard. The team's nickname refers to itself? Sure! That's why the mascots are just life-sized football players with no distinguishing characteristics, right? The picture on the helmet is just Darrell Green in a uniform, right?

You could maybe make that argument about the plural word Browns, but that's about the only sports team I can think of where it makes a lick of sense. Even the team recognizes that they're referring to Native Americans when they use it. How can you possibly say that it doesn't with a straight face? That people think football team first when they hear the word has absolutely nothing to do with what the word means. When I hear the word "spur" I think of the basketball team first- does that mean a spur isn't a jangly spikey thing attached to a boot heel?

By the way the South Park was amazing. Absolutely nailed both the name issue and the awful product the team has been selling us since Snyder took over. The Goodell stuff was pretty good too. And they got Apple and Kickstarter at the same time. One of their best in a while.

The fact that people think of one thing right away when they hear a word has absolutely nothing to do with what the word means. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: How can you say that with a straight face?

Did you see the episode I referenced? Do you not see any correlation or hypocrisy?

The Redskins episode was hilarious though. Those guys are funny ####ers. Even when they are on the wrong side of the issue. Godellbot is genius.

The first thing most people think of when they hear the word "spur" is Tim Duncan. What's this?

I saw the other episode. This is obviously different, because when people use "Redskin" they are simultaneously referring to both the team and to native Americans. Mascots- with the exception of the Browns I suppose- aren't self-referential. Even if you think of the team first when you hear the word the name still means something else.

To borrow from the other South Park episode you mention- let's say a professional sports team decided to call itself the f###### and put a caricature of a gay man on the helmet and did cheers based on homosexual stereotypes and fans dressed up in fabulous clothes or as my alias. I assume you realize that would be really bad, yes? Now what if eventually we got to the point that the first thing people associated with f###### was the football team and not homosexuals, even though the football team name was still obviously a slur referring to homosexuals. Would that magically make it OK?
