Valuing Return Yards (1 Viewer)

I've got a 10-team draft tomorrow that is a 0.5 pt per reception league and individual players also receive 1pt / 25 return yards. I'm considering the option to target Harvin and Patterson earlier than normal because of this. According to the current ADP for a PPR leagues, Patterson and Harvin are placed at 48 and 52 overall (49 and 52 in standard format) respectively.

I'm picking 8th and thinking about trying to snag one, or both, of them with my 3rd and 4th round selections (28th and 33rd overall). With the return yard bonus... does that sound like a sound strategy since they're likely to see an uptick in points?

Thanks.

They are valuable and there's only a handful like that but I wouldn't over think it as these 2 players stats are factored into the adp already.

Draft Dominator, the FBG Mobile Apps, and MyFBG all have support for individual returners. You can enter your scoring system and their fantasy points that result will include projections for return yards.

Actually that's not true. 1 pt/ 25 yards for returns is not common. I am in one league like this. Definitely warrants picking those guys higher.

While we're on the subject, who else is returning kicks and/or punts that also has value as a wr?

I know it's been mentioned recently that Cobb may return punts after all.

Russell addresses this in his returners article.

Yes in addition there's the thread here for discussing all things returner. And I put out an article yesterday that NCPanthersFan mentioned discussing return yards and rankings and in particular how to avoid over-valuing for them since returners are a much more uncertain group to try to predict than are offensive stats.

Really the best answer is use the rankings from the MyFBG, Draft Dominator or the apps, since it will take everything into your scoring system into account. The answer for a 1/10 return scoring is a bit different than that for 1/20 or 1/30 or less. And the projections already try to take into account the uncertainty so the player's don't end up over-ranked.

Yea I've used the app to review and did read that article this morning. Nice article and well timed for my purposes as well. Thanks. There's some other goofy scoring combined with a light IDP aspect as well so I'm trying to balance all that. I think it might also help me to jump at a top 3 QB early as well, because of some aspects of QB scoring that seems to prop up the top ones.

I've mainly focused on these two because of the 25 return yards per point since they typically return kickoffs, and it's easier to generate that point level per return. Patterson would probably have to be rated higher since the Vikes D isn't the best and he may see more returns. It could enable me to take a Jimmy Graham early and still get solid WR production later.

I don't really see the punt returners having as much of an effect, but still it's something to consider.

Someone asked about other players: Antonio Brown, Tavon Austin, Devin Hester (late flyer), and Darren Sproles all come to mind.
