Vegas (2 Viewers)

Going out with a semi-large group (around 5 couples) in mid-November. I was pushing for Venetian, Cosmo, or Caesar's but so far it seems like the leader in the clubhouse in terms of where to stay is MGM Grand since it's less expensive. Wife and I don't really do Vegas on a budget so I'd like to get a nicer room. Any room suggestions if that's the way they end up deciding? Or anybody with input on why MGM might not be a great option?
I stayed there once a while ago. It's HUGE. The first time they put us in a really crummy room in one of the far towers. It was literally like a cruise ship room. We walked 20 minutes back to the front desk and insisted on a better room and they obliged. The new room was ok but nothing special.

MGM wouldn't be my first choice, but they may have upgraded suites that are better than the standard room. Just make sure you don't get stuck in the crummy tower.

MGM is my favorite place to play roulette. I love the neighbors wheel.

It is huge there and if you get a newer room they are quite nice. One frustrating thing i remember was the safe was in the lower drawer if the nightstand and to open the blinds you pushed the button once and held it pressed to open and pushed twice and held to close them.

I generally like the MGM sportsbook, and like that the little convenience store is right outside for cheaper snacks and dranks.  Don't like that it is a full mile from any room and it takes forever to walk anywhere.

I've stayed there a few times, it's nice but nothing special.  Really like their casino, I like a busy craps table and they usually have a good game going all day, and good dealers.  We enjoyed Emeril's restaurant.

We're staying at Luxor in September, have any of you eaten at Tender?  MyVegas has a $75 coupon, so I might give it a try.  Reviews I've seen are ok.

Out of the hotels that you mentioned--my preference would be the Venetian in regards to the overall quality of their standard rooms. I find that even their standard rooms offer a very nice combination of quality and square footage.   I also like the general location of the Venetian--but all of the hotels that you mentioned are very well located.

In regards to the MGM--I have stayed there a few times.  I managed to have a nice time as it's Vegas--but I personally found the property to be a bit too sprawling for my liking.  It's a nice property with a nice casino, great dining options, nice entertainment--but it's just giant. I do like it's location and I do like that it has it's own monorail station.  I've stayed in the standard rooms there, the tower suite there, and a spa suite there.  I've also had a chance to stay in a one bedroom balcony suite at the Signature towers there--and that was my favorite.  There are 3 towers located towards the rear of the property called the "Signature" at the MGM grand that have their own special entrance and lobby.  While they are connected to MGM Grand via an indoor hallway equipped with moving walkways--they are a bit removed from the madness.  I also like how the room had a kitchenette.  I also found that sometimes the rooms at the Signature can be less expensive--so it's like the best of both worlds.  That would be my recommendation if you stay at the MGM property--unless you have an endless budget.

If you have an endless budget--there is a secret uber upscale hotel on the grounds of the MGM Grand that actually has a secret entrance.   It's called the "Mansion"--and you actually have to "qualify" to be eligible to stay there.  It's probably one of the nicest hotels in the USA but it's purposely hidden and only features like 29 total rooms.

Oh, look at me, I play $10 blackjack!!

;)

Thanks for all the detailed responses guys, thanks. I've been to Vegas like 5 times and a few of those were with the FBG team, so I don't have a ton of experiences with the actual hotels themselves. I was asked what's the biggest difference between staying at a Cosmo or Venetian vs an MGM or whatever. Best answer I could come up with was that the bars/restaurants in those places are just better and the locations are a little more central to where ya wanna be. Plus intangibly, I just "feel" like I'm in Vegas at Venetian or Cosmo. Thoughts?

As much as I like the bars and restaurants at the Venetian, I wouldn't put that at the top of the list. MGM has some pretty awesome spots too.

For me it's rooms. It is really hard to beat the rooms at the Venetian. Their smalles room is like 700 sq. feet, and they are really nice. I also like the location of the Venetian - I think it's perfect.

Regarding the "vibe," I agree with that too. For some reason it just feels good to me in that place.

Now, that said, the wife and I are switching it up and in two weeks we will be staying at the Cosmo in a balcony room overlooking the Bellagio fountains. Fingers crossed that we like it.

Rooms at venetian are awesome....downside is that depending on what tower you're in, you could be talking about a 10 minute walk from entering the front doors until you get to the rooms (could be two different elevator banks to navigate through)

I've never had that problem. We've stayed there probably 30 times and we always use the elevators by the Grand Lux. It's not a far walk at all from the front doors.

There is nothing more Vegas-y than the view from that balcony as the sun sets. I'll be shocked if you don't like it.

I don't understand how I keep getting these offers. I barely gamble at these places with the exception of the book, and that isnt tracked for MGM resorts like it is for caesars. I realize it is just the luxor and it is an off weekend, but I just booked 3 free nights Dec 1-4th (friday to monday). Tower suite, which I have grown to like quite a bit. The west tower is right by the book. Now dont get me wrong, the book still sucks for watching, but it is nice to have the book right there by your room and by self parking just for making bets.

ETA they also gave me a 50 dollar food and beverage credit.

So wife and I got invited to a wedding in Vegas on Sept 9th - it will be the first time I've been back in 6 years. It's been a long dry spell after being a regular for many years in the 'aughts. Pretty jazzed to be going opening weekend of football season which is why I said yes even though we will be on a tight budget in Vegas for the first time since I was a penniless 20-something. Not at all surprised to see I got no good offers with my players memberships since its been years since I've last been out. We decided to stay at the Monte Carlo (never stayed the before) simply because it was cheap and where some friends were staying too.

I'll read through here on the sports books recommendations - but wondering, there's got to be tons of fantasy football stuff going on this weekend too right? High stakes drafts and such?

FF drafts will all be done by then. There is a Thursday game, so by Sept 9, most drafts are done.

I really like the Venetian sports book. I go there Saturday night to place my bets, and you can ask for a reserved seat if you bet enough (I'm not sure what "enough" is, but I usually bet about $1K and get two seats.). It's a pretty big book with nice TV's and food places right by it.

That wasn't the case back in the day unless things have changed, lots of drafts were held on the days after the opening game on Wednesday/Thursday. FFPC in particular, IIRC.

Yup, FFPC drafts are going on through Saturday, same with a few of the other big events as well if I recall (can only confirm FFPC as we draft Saturday morning, but in years past there were other events still drafting that day)

That just seems so dumb to me. Especially with the Pats playing Thursday.

tough to beat Cosmo's location IMO, combined with their awesome restaurants and rooms.
Have reservations at Milos for tomorrow night.

Staying at Monte Carlo because MLife rewards were insanely good and I wanted to be near T-Mobile in case I decide to go to this fight Saturday night. NYNY was an option but I'm getting room and two meals comped (for limited play) on a very busy weekend. The resort fee stands though. Stupid resort fees.

Anyone know why room rates the last week (and weekend) of January are so high right now?

Side note fellas: If you bring your significant other to the Venetian, get used to that being the spot for the next trip out.  Aint no going back to the Hooters Hotel after that.

FFWC's last draft is Saturday night.  They have a viewing party for the drafters all day on Sunday as well.

Just finished up the family trip through California so now I can focus on the Vegas trip with the wife and another couple in October.  I've been there maybe around 10 times over the last 15 years and like trying out new places and often splitting between two hotels.  I stay at nicer places with the wife and cheaper places with the guys.  With the guys I've stayed at Luxor, Excalibur, Imperial Palace, Tropicana, Mirage, etc.  The first time I was there was with the wife for a wedding and we stayed at Harrah's because of a group room block.  The second time we split our stay between "The Hotel" at Mandalay Bay and the Bellagio.  Third time I think we only stayed at Venetian, I like the rooms and being close to Bouchon.  Last time we stayed with same couple who was there for a conference and used their room block discount at MGM.  This time we're going to try Cosmo for the first time and stay in the terrace suite overlooking the fountains with the sex bathroom for the Thurs night while its cheaper.  I like the low roller stuff (I miss the old O'Sheas) and like what they're doing downtown so we're going to try staying there for the first time and we're going with the Downtown Grand for Fri and Sat nights.  Rooms look nice enough and pool area looks cool for a break during the day.  I like the D casino but their hotel doesn't look like much.

We saw Absinthe on the last visit a couple of years ago and liked it alot, Cirque Love a few years before was pretty good.  Any recommendations for a good show while we're there this time?  Would like something like Absinthe but don't want to do the same thing twice.

Supposed to be a ton of construction going on at Monte Carlo right now. Just FYI.
Thanks - that jives with some other stuff I saw about their pool currently being shut down.

Totally forgot I have an M-Life card already - will have to see what I can do now that we already booked our reservation.

The Michael Jackson cirque show was surprisingly entertaining, and I think it's available at the half price ticket show kiosks for a discount.

How is the Hard Rock nowadays?  Seeing a really low price for mid-November and wondering if this is cause pool scene is out of season or if the place has gone downhill.

The Hard Rock has expanded a ton.   I'm personally not a big fan of it because you are a bit isolated if you stay there. It's not on the strip--its on Paradise and Harmon---which is a full 2+ blocks off of the strip.  If you stay there--you'll pretty much be signing up for a lot of taxi rides and Ubers.   Don't get me wrong--the hotel itself is decent--and of course the pool and the concerts are what the hotel is really built around.  If you aren't planning on using their pool (or if their pool is closed for the season) and if you aren't planning on attending a concert there--I personally wouldn't stay there.

That's about what I recall - location is meh but while you're on property it's about as good as other casinos.

I like the Linq. Perfect location, inexepensive, and the rooms are pretty darn new. They aren't the greatest rooms in the world, but who cares?

if you like craft beer, you can sit at the bubble craps table (load it up wtih $20 and maybe play the pass line occasionally) at the TAG sports bar at the Linq, and drink some quality craft beers. The waitress service is very fast, give the girl a nice tip, she could care less if you are playing.

There's a Mediterranean place called Cleo in SLS (formerly Sahara). Its future is uncertain after the casino changed hands, but if you are coming here any time soon, I can recommend it without reservation.

I'm going to be in Vegas for a bachelor party this weekend and will have some time to fill, and I have no idea really what to do.  I've been there a few times for work conferences and it's fine but I'm not really a Vegas guy, I don't think.  A friend and I are traveling together, arriving around 8 AM Friday morning and flight out is at like 6 PM Monday....flying direct was cheaper, the other attendees are coming from different cities, so we get in well before everyone else and leave after everyone else on Monday, so there's empty time in the schedule.

Specifically I will have no plans from like 8 AM - 8 PM on Friday and most all day Monday.  We are staying at the Cosmopolitan.  I am not much of a gambler, I'll place some sports bets but probably nothing else.  I do like food and beer, not afraid to spend a few bucks for something great....went to Bouchon last time I was in Vegas for brunch and it was fantastic.  So any food recommendations are accepted.

I have never seen Fremont Street, so I will probably get an Uber out there and just walk around to check it off the list.  But otherwise I'm kinda at a loss.  Any ideas?  The timing is a little awkward since there won't be too many shows running at those times and there's not much on to just plunk down at a sports book with a few drinks and place a few bets for the hell of it.

I'll be there this weekend as well with the wife and a few other couples.   I'm into boozing and gambling though so most of my suggestions would revolve around that  :D

Fremont is cool especially at night, but they have the Life Is Beautiful music festival down there's this weekend so I'm guessing it'll be more crowded than usual and I think certain parts of downtown are blocked off for it

Have heard great things about Yard bird so we're doing a brunch down there

When in doubt just get drunk and wander around and look at hot chicks I guess

I mean, I'm into boozing, but I have a feeling I'd be in for a rough night if I spent all day drinking only to have the bachelor show up and want to go hard all night.  I'm sure I'll have a few beers over the course of the day though.  The guy traveling with me isn't a drinker at all - though he will gamble a bit - so we're kinda incompatible in that arena.

I actually looked at that music festival to see if there was enough to get me there for Friday afternoon but there's not enough on that lineup that I love and I'd have to leave before the headliners anyway.  I didn't realize it was at Fremont Street, that kinda puts a damper on things.

It looks like the main Freemont Street Experience is outside the festival limits, so you should still be able to check it out.  Like in said I've only been at night though, not sure how it is during the day

I pity the man who can't find something fun to do in Vegas.  You don't have to get drunk, but start lightly drinking at 10am and get a good buzz going.  And don't be a ##### about gambling, get your friend into the trip and sit down with him and throw some money down on some blackjack, craps... throw on some swim trunks and sit at the poolside bar and talk to some women, then go to Fremont Street in the late afternoon with a good buzz on and time will fly by.

Stay thirsty, my friend.

Have you considered hiking nearby or going to Grand Canyon/Zions/Bryce?

I never said I couldn't have a good time, just that I don't really know what to do in Vegas other than gamble (which I don't have a moral problem with, just not my cup of tea) or the shows (which won't be running in the afternoon).  I've been to Vegas like 3 times, and each time has been a structured work-trip/conference setting with little free time.  I've spent most of my occasional free time drinking beer and walking down the strip.  Big fan of lax open-container laws.
