Going for Conference tourney weekend to beat the March madness crowd.

Anyone know how that plays out crowd-wise?

the only location i could determine with certainty is the third one. It's in a pretty good location on Sahara (I can point you to a few decent restaurants around there, too).

Which hotel is her work stuff at?
Mandalay Bay
First and second one are both at Sahara and Maryland
Anyone else have thoughts on the above 3 places?

Looking to book something today

She's a bit aways from Mandalay. Sahara is a good deal north from there. She'll have to hop on highway 15 to get there.

Not a huge downside, but while you're 5 minutes from the strip, you're more like 15-20 from mandalay depending on traffic.

15-20 mins is fine. Not worried about her commute to and from
Then pull the trigger. Sounds like you don't mind being a bit far from her commute and definitely want to be off the strip. Can't do better than vrbo house for value and that location is centrally located.

Does the $20 tip to the Vegas check-in clerks for a better room/higher floor still work at the decent hotels or has inflation bumped that to $40?

I am guessing it depends on the hotel.

I tried this last time at the Monte Carlo and the clerk handed it back to me and gave me a strip view upgrade, but then again I had my two little daughters with me, so maybe that played into her decision.

  • City Center looked nice when strolling through a couple years ago, but I have no idea about any of the hotels there. Which ones are better than the others? Is it too loud/busy? I know I probably can't afford the Mandarin...
Vdara is very nice. There is no casino but the rooms are way cool and the pool is nice. Aria and Cosmopolitan are both right next door (and there is a tram to both the Bellagio and Monte Carlo). Great location, great rooms, easy access to good casinos.
My wife and I stay at Aria every year for our annual Vegas trip. We love it.

I am heading there this July to see Rush with my best friend. Going to stay at the MGM as they are playing the Grand Garden Arena. Going to be a great weekend indeed!

Aria sportsbook is my favorite. I said it earlier in this thread, Aria as a whole though just seems, blah. Don't really feel the energy of other casinos. Hard to explain.

But back to sportsbook. It has everything I look for. Comfortable seating, bathrooms within sportsbook, attentive waitresses, pizza place right next door. I used to always go to the Mandalay book but they desperately need a tv upgrade.

Aria sportsbook has a weird layout. I agree with Balco that having the bathrooms in the book and that pizza joint right outside is really good (for pizza in Vegas).

The room just seemed too narrow IMO.

I was thinking of trying it at the Delano. This guy didn't do so well...

Here's a good message board for each hotel:

We love our strip view suite, love the spa but we don't play there. We typically play at Planet Hollywood at night and NY/NY during the day. And wherever we may have dinner (Wynn, Bellagio etc). I agree about Aria's casino.....very blah. I do play poker there though. It is a quaint but comfortable poker room.

But Planet Hollywood is our favorite casino.

Alright, so we changed our minds about getting a house. We want to be close to the conference at Mandalay Bay, and we will not have car, so it needs to be within walking distance - so less than a mile or mile and half I guess.

Looking at suites, for we have the 1/5 and 3.5 year old. In order to make sleeping work, we need either an entire extra room, or at least a separated sitting room.

Found these suites that are close enough to Mandalay to make work. Any thoughts on these? These are prices for 5 nights.

Excalibur Suite - 1465 + 22.40/day resort fee

Luxor Suite - 1227 + 28/day fee

Mandalay Suite - 1500 - 1800 + 32.48/day fee

Desert Rose 2 BR - 1260 + unknown resort fee

NY NY Suite - 1454 includes fees and taxes

Monte Carlo 1101 + 28/day fee + 2 free buffets

Of those Mandalay is by far the best to stay at.

Monte Carlo is nice for that price.

Agree that I would not want to stay at Luxor, Excalibur, or dr.

IMO I wouldnt stay at Luxor/Excalibur/Desert Rose... personally.
I agree with Icon. The Excalibur isn't horrible if you have young kids like you do, but it's not the nicest hotel on the strip. NY NY is ok, but no poker room. I think Mandalay bay is your best bet.

Unfortunately not looking to do much gambling, if any. Wife is in conference all day so I am entertaining the kiddos.

More just looking at most comfortable room with the most kid friendly attractions close by.

That seems like an outrageous price for Excalibur IMO.

The order for me:

Mandalay Bay

Ny Ny

Luxor

Excaliber

I dont know enough about the Monte Carlo or Desert Rose to add them to the list.

FWIW, the Luxor has no Wifi in the "regular" rooms. Thats embarressing to me. Not sure about the suites.

Any recent High Roller riders? Is it worth the steep cost?

I think if I was going to do it I would ride during the day. The night lights of Vegas might look cool but it seems it would be hard to see much.

rode about 4 weeks ago.

I thought it was a cool novelty... the thing was dead and my wife and i got a private ride.

As to whether it is worth it... I'd say most people would say no... much like many things in Vegas it's over-priced.

But as to whether I enjoyed it... yeah, i thought it was a cool one-time thing.

Moops, did you get my e-mail?
Yea I did. sorry, meant to respond. thanks a bunch. some really good stuff in there
No worries. Just wanted to make sure.

I gave you restaurants for the northern end of the strip. Although I'd still consider checking some of them out.

At Mandalay, you definitely want to hit the Burger Bar in Mandalay Place. Also, Mandalay has an aquarium and stuff in it and the pool is second to none for family setup.

Just came back from a weekend at Delano (Mandaly's all-suite hotel) and ate at Burger Bar. I've been there 2 or 3 times before. The quality of the burgers is a little overrated at this point (not bad at all... just not outstanding), but the place still shines with the fries/dipping sauces and the milk shakes. Very solid beer selection as well. I'd still recommend it particularly for those staying in/around Mandalay, but there are now other places on the Strip worth for burgers.

A couple other food recommendations... ate at Raku again in Chinatown. Excellent izakaya. I did the omakase menu a couple years ago, but just did the a carte this time. You can't go wrong either way.

I still love the Wicked Spoon buffet at Cosmopolitan. The shark move is to buy a discounted second ticket off of E-Bay. That will save you $25+. Just make sure to buy it in advance because it will have to be sent to you in the mail (I don't think it's available for codes).

How about The Tropicana?
I've never stayed there. I think they just did a remodel so it might be ok.

I never miss stopping by Burger Bar whenever I am in Vegas. Milkshakes are outstanding.

How about The Tropicana?
I agree with others that Mandaly Bay is a much better option than the others. Their pool is fantastic (wave pool and lazy river, in addition to other pools). You can take the tram to New York New York, or just walk through a bunch of casinos to get to Main Strip (which I recommend, get to walk through several casinos, including Luxor and Excalibur (you will know why we are suggesting you don't stay there))

A woman i worked with stayed at Tropicana, said rooms were clean. It is the perfect location on the strip.

What's so bad about the Excalibur and Luxor? Ive stayed at about every hotel that is >12-15 years old on the strip, just curious as to why they suck so bad. Then again I don't really hang out at my hotel much anyways. I actually just booked two weeks in June at the Excalibur, will only cost me $40 to back out of it. I really like the Monte Carlo and Excalibur because they are located in a great place on the strip for the dollar value. They are old, but still seem fairly clean. I stayed in the Luxor about a year and a half ago. Stayed at the Excalibur several years back. Never stayed at Mandalay Bay because its a pretty good hike to get in the good area of the strip. Taking my girlfriend there for 5 days of it, playing in some WSOP for the rest. She wanted to get there cheap, now Im reconsidering. I don't want to dirtbag her. What do you guys think?

I didn't think the Luxor was bad, it just isn't Mandalay Bay.

Mandalay is looking like almost twice as much money for a suite that doesn't have a separate living room space or a private bedroom. Want to be able to shove the kids into their own space when it is their bedtime.

Tropicana has a 2 room suite, and they will put a roll away bed in it for one of the kids. They are trying to add 50 bucks a night for the extra people in the room. I didnt agree to that today, so I am trying to think of some argument that a 1 year old and 3 year old shouldn't really warrant an extra 50 dollar charge. If I can get that charge waived, it's just over 200 a night with all fees and taxes included.

Maybe look into renting points at elara or just purchasing a room. I know it isnt at that end of the strip, but it is incredibly nice, no casino, no night clubs, the pool is decent, no resort fees(iirc), connected to a mall. Your wife can either walk or cab it to the conference.

I just gave my GF your scenario... she's stayed at both with her friends and she says she'd rather be at Excalibur. I've never stayed at either, but have walked through both. From my limited perspective, I'd chose Tropicana... cheap taste > tacky taste.

ETA: To be fair, the kids would probably prefer the decor/theme of Excalibur. And they'd likely love the Mediveal Timesk show. Of course, you can still see all that staying at Tropicana, but you have to cross LV Boulevard every time with the kiddos. Have fun with those palm cards!!!

I've stayed in Excalibur a few times. Pretty grimy rooms and the floor always seems to be a mess. Not the best ventilation either with the age of the casino.

I haven't stayed in the trop since renovations. Only reason I ever go to the trop is the comedy club, but if you can get a divided suite for 200 during the busy time period you are going that's

pretty advantageous. Frankly, I also like the Luxor.

If you can swing Mandalay it's by far the nicest of your options, but sounds like it won't work. New York New York is probably the second nicest, but I don't know if it's worth paying substantially more than the trop or Luxor.

Just the thoughts of someone who travels to Vegas more than monthly with the second highest tier M-Life card, which means I'm comped rooms at Mandalay, Luxor, Exc, MGM, Monte Carlo and a few others. Luxor has some pretty nice qualities right now. It's rep, Excalibur's too, rightfully declined as the properties aged. Excalibur was built to be a budget, family resort; a very cheap place to stay, and it hasn't aged well. Luxor was meant to be a little nicer and it always was, but the animatronic camels and other Arabic themes crushed business post 9-11. A major renovation was launched and then stalled by the economic meltdown. For years the place has been unfinished with plywood sheets for walls all over the place. A major portion of the casino is still under renovation, and for the four days I was just there, no work was being done. It was the New Year holiday though. The room renovations are quite nice. Bathrooms have been expanded by removing closets that have been replaced by armoires. Everything about the rooms feels bigger. New beds, furnishings, carpets, etc. Nice. The four rooms we had at Luxor, basic pyramid and basic tower, were nicer than any basic rooms at Mandalay. The Luxor tower rooms are extra large for basic rate rooms and the bathrooms are fantastic. Ours were adjoining, something Moops might consider. The pyramid rooms are still small, but no worse than Mandalay and they are for now just nicer rooms. Nicer rooms is nice, but it doesn't make for a better resort. Mandalay still has much better amenities, casino, pool, restaurants, shark exhibit, shopping. With the exception of the pool (Mandalay guests only) all of that is easily accessed from Luxor (10 minute indoor walk, shorter tram ride). The Luxor pool is no comparison to Mandalay, but it has much better snack bar food, pool side service, it is less crowded, more comfortable and in it's day was so nice my brother and his girlfriend used to sneak in because it was their favorite pool in town. Note Luxor is the center property making access to the others easiest.

We stayed at the Excaliber when the kids were really young. I remeber liking the little magic show they had. And the pool was actually pretty awesome for small kids. In the back they have pretty good sized pool with two little water slides and the whole pool is like 3 feet deep. And they sell these plastic football frozen drinks that are huge for the adults. No lazy river or anything.

I didn't like the resort all that much, and it's not super nice, but there are a few cool things of you have kids.

My wife and I stayed at the MGM Signature for several nights two weekends ago. Surprisingly, the rates were cheaper than the MGM Grand. We were very impressed with the Signature. It was really clean, seemingly new with a large room, huge bathroom and whirlpool. It's set back off of the strip a little bit, behind the MGM Grand. You get to the strip by walking through a skyway to the MGM Grand, which is great for us as we like the walk. Another nice thing was it was very quiet. You don't have early 20-somethings running the halls every night like a lot of other hotels. Most of the people at this place were families and businessmen/women.
