With the Sahara going dark, all that's left is the Riviera which is worse than the Sahara IMO and CC, which is in its own bizarre class. There are a bunch of vacant lots with the occasional gift shop and condo tower. The Peppermill is still pretty cool though.The death and failed redevelopment of the North Strip really hurt a property like the Sahara. There's very little reason for most visitors to ever make it that far North.

PSA: Anyone frequenting the gentlemen's clubs should be careful if they enter the VIP room. I have heard of two people getting roofied and robbed. One, my friend, had about $8k stolen and woke up at 9am in the parking lot with a $20 in his pocket. My optometrist told me a similar story about his friend who had $4k run on his credit cards and also woke up in the parking lot around 9.

Yeah it was weird. Don't forget the rollercoaster.Seriously though, the rooms were decent for the price and the casino usually had some low-limit tables open. For those of us that don't use $100 bills to light $1000 on fire like Chet the Sahara wasn't too bad.

If you come in from the strip the basic casino layout is like this:

As you walk down the center you are in a very narrow casino. To the left and right are the normal card games the dealers are facing the center of the casino. (this is fairly similar to cosmo)

About 300 feet down or so there's a break in the casino with a bar, elevators, other misc. crap.

On the other side of this break the casino widens up a bit. They set the craps table in the back of this wider area in two "blocks" of 9 craps tables each set in 3x3 bricks. They are the super huge tables too. The ones that the whores can't ever seem to keep dice on the table with.

So here you are in the very, very back of the casino with nothing really to see but other people shooting dice. It's odd.

This is the property map. The craps is in the spot between the poker room and the sportsbook. It takes up most of that entire zone left of the highrollers.

But you can't really see into any of those areas from the pit.

Well I'm staying at the Riviera this year. Before zow or any of you "I like to spend $400 a night to spend seven hours in my room" crowd comes in to blast me, consider this...

It's old school, the rooms are revamped, it gets decent reviews on the various travel sites and it's the right price. It was between the Riviera, Sahara, Circus-Circus and the IP for me. I was going to stay at one of the Marriott products which I've done the past two years, but that really isn't much fun. No bar, no hookers no people to make fun of. I'm going for work and my room per diem is just $93 a night, and I refuse to pay out of my pocket to stay at a fancy hotel that I'll never be in. I actually do 6-10 hours a work per day while I'm there and I'm not much for cruising the strip or trying to get lucky with a house wife from Wichita who is at one of the bars at the Paris.

I've stayed at the IP, it is pretty bad for Vegas but does have its charm. I've just heard way too many negative comments about the Sahara and Circus-Circus is all kinds of strange. Plus I'm going for a conference/expo at the Convention Center and the Riviera is right across the street. So is the Hilton Sportsbook which is my special Vegas place anyway. Oh...and it's near the Peppermill.

It may suck but I've stayed at hotels in Africa that the locals have rated 1 star. Pretty sure I'll be fine. Will report back with my finding later this week.

I turned 40 on Wednesday and celebrated in Vegas with some friends last weekend. I am finally fully recovered and have no one to blame but myself. I am too old to do a 6am, 930am, 930 am trio. Oh, and land in Chicago to have my lovely wife take me to Charlie sheen when all I want to do is crawl up in a ball.

Super short trip summary: marquee was ### and XS rocked. It helped that we had the best table at XS and hooked up with a super hot bachelorette party. Tables sucked especially from 8-930 on Sunday am but sports betting was good.
