Alien Isolation is one bad ### survival horror game that has nailed the ambiance of Ridley Scott's masterpiece Alien.

The game has me on edge at all times. Being creative in creating distractions (for both humans, synthetics and the Alien) and using limited resources is the key to succeeding each mission. The sounds, lighting, everything about it is well done. A lot of care and love went into making the Alien game we have been waiting for.

If you love survival horror and really are an Alien film geek...it is a must play. I play the game in total Darkness with my Sony gold wireless headphones. Really creepy.

On normal difficulty it is unforgiving. You will die and die a lot.
Good to hear. Im dying to play this. I haven't bought a game since March (Dark Souls 2) and I preorderd that in dec 2013.

I think your review just changed all that.

I watched the Evolve beta on Twitch for an hour or so last night. This game seemed like a great idea when it was announced, but oh man does it look boring. Basically the hunters run around for a 10 minutes (seems like longer), and then get more or less curb-stomped by the monster. Literally, the monster won every match I watched, and only one was even competitive. Strangely, even the monster itself seemed kind of boring since so much of the game is just a mad chase with little room for creativity.

This game was solidly on my "probably" list a few months ago, but not now. Decent chance I won't buy another game until Bloodborne, although Alien: Isolation is sounding pretty tempting.

Edit: I started Walking Dead Season Two last night, and I just finished episode 2. Strangely, I'm actually liking this more than Season One so far, but I know I'm in a small minority there. I like the fact that the story so far is more compact and has a somewhat clearer trajectory. There needs to be a clearer spoiler warning that you absolutely positively need to play Season One before playing Season Two. You just can't do the second without the first.

Realistically I know I'll never be able to play both Oblivion and Skyrim so thanks for the input. Why is Skyrim better? I know Oblivion had terrible leveling but I have installed a mod to address that. Other reasons to prefer Skyrim?
I have to disagree with the others here. If you can fix the broken leveling, Oblivion is the better of the two games. I say that mainly because of the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quest lines, both of which are vastly better than anything in Skyrim. The Thieves Guild line in particular has one of my all-time favorite missions in any game. Also, I like that things are slightly more complicated in Oblivion -- that seems befitting of an RPG.

I agree, after Morrowind, TES franchise has gotten worse with each entry.

Remove content, replace with better graphics.

The leveling thing is what turned me away. I played it on PS3. So I could not get a mod fix. I just hated that design choice.

But I love Skyrim. And the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines are pretty damn good as well in Skyrim. I also enjoyed the map more.

Another thing that adds to the immersion is reading all the stories on the computers, listening to the audio logs etc. There is some low level puzzle solving in there as well. The games biggest strength's are the Alien AI and the ambience. It really put's you into the entire feel of the first movie. Some complaints were the game had some mindless missions, and too much go pull this lever, turn on this switch etc. But that is the point. Doing things while this Xenomorph is stalking you (as well as synthetics gone mad and some humans on the station who are not friendly).

It is freaking nerve racking going from point A to point B with all this going on.

Skyrim's map is so much better - there's far more of a sense of exploration. Oblivion seemed to have a dungeon / house / encounter every ten feet, and you could see the imperial city from almost everywhere - it took me out of the sense of scale that is somewhat important to these games.

Getting ready to bail on mordor. I have 1 mission left but also

brand the warchiefs, I accidentally killed one

ugh

I am at 92% completion right now....I am determined to get the 100% completion trophy. Then I will shelve the game. It has been a heck of a great time though. One of the most satisfying action games I have ever played.

Alien Isolation is simply fantastic. I'm not even that far in. Once the Alien shows up and randomly patrols that first big area, I don't think I moved my character out of the dark corner I was crouching in for about 15 minutes. I was just trying to see its patterns and was also watching some other poor NPC try to hide from it in vain. The save points are placed far enough away from each other that you actually care about dying.

We are about level 24/25 right now and I got a legendary 2H axe last night for my crusader that gives me +600 health per hit. My son was jealous, though as the archer he sits back with his dual hand xbows and gets about +200/hit. Combine that with rapid fire and he loves this game.
I've been playing a crusader with my wife (I'd played the other classes in vanilla, wanted to mix it up in the expansion). She's got a barbarian. Currently she's critting for about 14,000,000 while I crit for ~2,000,000. It's crazy.
Hey Kanil, you quit CoC?
Kind of. The app stopped working for a couple weeks and then my company decided to double in size so we added 1500 people in 3 months. I run an IT support group so I got really busy there for a while.About a week ago one of the guys that works for me asked me if I played. I updated the app to show him my base and it worked. I'm now in his family's clan (15 people total) and we're 0-2 on wars and getting basically doubled in score.
Well get your ### back over in fbgs. We've got our mojo back.
I looked at FBGS last night. Looks like a lot of people trophy pushing. Tons of black shields. I doubt I'll move though as I'm really just playing to play with my guys.

Halfway (on chapter 7) through Evil Within. Tough to find more than a few hours per week, but I'm loving this game. Truly is a great follow-up to RE4.

My only problem with the Thieves Guild quest is that the Cowl of the Grey Fox is kind of gamebreaking, it takes all the challenge out of sneaking.

Agreed, but to be fair, there are many many ways to get overpowered in this game. Enchanting items or wearing the gear that makes you 100% invisible accomplishes the same thing. You pretty much need to limit yourself from breaking all the elder scrolls games. My only real gripe with the game is the insanely long loading times that put me to sleep. Literally.

ETA- add me to the list that thinks the thieves guild quest in oblivion is 100 times better than that in Skyrim.

I am a PC player and have zero problem with load screens.

I also loved Oblivion, thought the main story was better too.

As an interesting observation, after playing to level 28 with my son in Diablo 3 as a Crusader, I reinstall and log into my Demon Hunter, level 56, to see what crap I had, etc. Run out into Caldeum to kill some stuff and start getting flat out owned. First 4 items that drop, yellows and blues, are all better than my respective legendary and gem-installed pieces I had from the previous PC version. Upgrade to the loot, indeed. I cannot believe I have switched from preferring the archer type to melee, either. Crusader is so dang fun.

ETA these were not small changes either. I had 2 bows drop in the first 4 items, and they all did at LEAST 100% more damage and had boosts of at least 20% to healing and toughness.

Yep. Get a number of Oblivion stones (or whatever they're called) and enchant your armor until you're 100% Chameleon. You can stand in front of a daedra and kick it in the face, and it'll just blink and wonder what was that, George?

Recently started playing again. Enjoying the heck out my monk. The rifts, greater rifts, more treasure goblins, better loot, etc are all vast improvements from when this game started.

Also FWIW -

Oblivion = better Dark Brotherhood story, better Thieves Guild story, ok Main story, lousy Fighter's Guild story, repetitive dungeons.

Skyrim = better Fighter's Guild story (Companions), better Main story, and much larger and more dynamic dungeons.

While these games occasionally hit on an interesting side quest or two (like Oblivion with the Dark Brotherhood), I couldn't recommend either on the basis of their storytelling. That isn't where they excel by RPG standards at least.

I watched the Evolve beta on Twitch for an hour or so last night. This game seemed like a great idea when it was announced, but oh man does it look boring. I think Evolve will live or die based on grouping with friends. Executing complicated strategies and having them blow up in your face can make for some good times. I'm hoping the usual FBG Left 4 Dead group will give it a whirl. This video gives me some hope.

There will be a group of my friends playing it on PS4. My wife will also be playing (just bought the second PS4 today!!!).

I thought the Dark Brotherhood story in Oblivion was good enough.

The scene when you find the other Hands torturing Lechance was one of the more OH F#$$ moments I've had in a game.

Finally finished the main story in mordor. Really good game but started to drag and get a tad monotonous. I did very little side missions. Couple of questions and comments.

if I had to actually fight the guy at the end after all that I was going to be pissed.

the taking over the warlords got to be too much. I had like 9 chiefs finally under my control before I could make my move. They were all in the stronghold so it got tedious.

finally can someone explain the end. So I'm still half dead and continue to fight?

I gave up on that game before finishing the first five warlords. It's graphically gorgeous. I love the theme. It feels like Mordor. Just a visually beautiful game.

But like those Arkham games, it's soooooooo ### #### repetitive. Mob, mash buttons, mash buttons, mash buttons, run away, regroup, heal, jump back in, mash some more buttons....

The combat system sucks.

What's H1Z1?
Zombie survival MMO, similar I hear to DayZ (but I haven't played that so I couldn't tell you). I already have an all access subscription for DC Universe Online, so I will be able to play it on release.

Early access is already available.

Hey fellow dorks. Thinking about shooting the lock off the wallet and buying a PS4 and 512 GB SSD. It looks like I can get a PS4, Last of Us Remastered, and GTA5 for $450 on Amazon and could find the ssd for around $215. Reasonable enough but if anyone sees a better deal, let me know and thanks.

I've been debating this for weeks now. I have a nice TV for it and think both games look extremely fun but I haven't really played on a console since the PS2 and got bored of the games (including a GTA) pretty quickly. The only games I played regularly were Tekken, Madden, and NHL in the college/early post-college days.

Guess the question here is, if you were a PC-only guy who hadn't played console games regularly for better than a decade, is it worth the approx $665 for just the console and these two games?

Why the ssd?

In the grand scheme of things, you don't get enough out of a PlayStation 4 hard drive upgrade to justify spending a lot of money. The PS4 was designed with its stock disk in mind, and it delivers a well-balanced experience, given the console's total cost. You wouldn't buy a new car and then drop half of its cost on an exhaust system for 10 more horsepower, right? That'd be the SSD equivalent. Those same gains you get on the desktop just don't translate over.

Last edited by a moderator:
I am in agreement with Bell.

But out of curiosity, what are you intending to use the SSD for?

Do you intend to keep every game you every play in digital form? I am a disc based player myself and have no need for extra space.

Last edited by a moderator:
Lol that was from a Tom's hardware link I thought I posted :bag:

eta I buy discs also

I was thinking that I would store the games to get the speed increase from the ssd that I see on the PC. I read that the speeds are quite a bit faster in comparisons between a standard PS4, a hybrid PS4 and a full ssd PS4, but it sounds like from you guys that I wouldn't get the increase I think I would. I can spend the money, so that isn't the worry. Its just, will I get what I want out of it?

Completely comparing ssd increases from my PC, so let me know if I'm off about that. Again, much appreciated guys.

So I just finished playing through The Stick of Truth, and freaking loved it. What other games are similar to this for the ps3? I put many hours into Skyrim already, but I'm new to the turn-based combat genre, and this was right up my alley.

This is one of my favorite threads here. I know you guys won't steer me wrong. ;)

As an old school PC gamer, I'm impressed with the PS4 so far with no upgrades. I'd rather get 3 extra controllers and a charger than the ssd. I still can't imagine playing a FPS on console, though.

Thanks, yeah. I've also played the crap out of both fallout 3 and NV. I guess I'm looking for more turn-based recommendations.

Is it just a dying genre?

It's not a traditional RPG or funny or anything, but you might enjoy Valkyria Chronicles. Has combat somewhat similar to Xcom (good turn based), but is more RPG-like in story and characters that you play the entire game.

I hope you like it.

At its price point, I would say give it a shot even if its graphics/etc don't initially grab you (it's somewhat anime in look) - the setting is very cool, and the characters / story are surprisingly gritty.

Started to post the same thing. Restarted this game after getting a new laptop and am enjoying it much more this time around.
