Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (5 Viewers)

Need a game, or game series recomendation. My 13 year old likes playing the CoD campaigns. We play online a bit together, but he prefers playing the campaign. However, they are fairly short. Are there games that are more built around the campaign, are fairly straightforward (he is not going to want a complex battle system), linear (not open world/sandbox), and are just shoot em up (FPS prefered)? I have to believe these are out there, but it seems most of the games lately are either sandbox, built around the online experience, or more puzzle, problem solving that he'd enjoy.

Doesn't have to be brand new, PS4 or PS3 are both options.

Extra points for co-op campaign.

Bonus extra points for 3 player co-op on one system.

Wolfenstein: The New Order. It's one of the very, very few single-player only FPS games out there.

for the PS, the Resistance and Killzone series both have single player campaigns. Resistance 2 is a great game.

Have you played Portal and Portal 2? The co-op on that is great. Slax held my hand through it.

Is this sarcasm? For some reason I thought there would be a boatload of these games.

Thanks. Love co-op.

Anyone play Mission: Bahgdad on the original Xbox? That was a great Co-op game. Split screen four ways. Four different characters (rifleman, heavy gunner, sniper, medic). PLayed through missions and had to figure out how to use each most effectively. Fun game. Wish there were more like that.

Not sarcasm. Most shooters are very heavily centered around online multiplayer, not the campaign.

Borderlands.

Best FPS co-op series of games ever. Up to 4 player co-op, linear campaign with the option for side quests and exploring for easter eggs and treasure. It is all about running and gunning (aim/shoot/destroy), and the character leveling system allows for fantastic character diversity (although I guess the leveling system could be considered complex because of the many options however you can respec pretty much any time so no-harm, no foul) and as a bonus it is absolutely hilarious (particularly BL2).

I played Crysis recently and loved it. It's linear without feeling completely linear. You can wander the island to your heart's content but there is one objective at a time and the game guides you right to it. It's not completely run and gun as you can approach things from a more stealth approach or go in guns blazing.

And I know there are several out now, I think 3 in the main series plus another full parallel game.

The OP wanted more linear / story focused, and less sandbox. Love me some Borderlands, but a story-driven, move you forward campaign it isn't.

Story actually doesn't matter. It can have a story, or no story. I just know he doesn't want to wander a city for an hour looking for a specific person to give him his next quest.

Thanks for all the suggestions though, I will give some of these a shot.

No worry about that, the main quest is spelled out quite clearly from the beginning with waypoints to guide you through every step of the way. You also have the option to pick up side quests and all the side-quest givers are marked on your map when you enter a new region so no searching for any hidden people to give you additional content. There are certain things which you can search out for additional XP (like Vault hunter symbols) but they are not related to the story (or side quests) so you can ignore them as you like.

Just started up Sleeping Dogs after Alan Wake. It's pretty fun - takes a lot of the good stuff in GTA and fixes some of the annoying things.

Overall probably not the same level of quality as GTA but it's pretty close and a fun change of pace so far.

I'm disappointed in myself but I can't get into the Fallout games. I have zero doubt that I will try 4 but for the most part it's dark and desolate. I just not a world I enjoy.

I agree that it is a desolate and unenjoyable setting but I think that is the intent. Still fun games though (I liked New Vegas more personally).

New Vegas was my favorite of all the Bethesda games.

My biggest gripe with all Bethesda open world games is the barren landscapes. Miles and miles of nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Even though it's post apocalyptic, there should be a lot more wildlife. The elder scrolls games have no excuse.

This is why you play on PC and get the increased wildlife mod or the mod that increases the number of NPCs you see in the wild. Those are some of the best game changing mods out there.

I would love to play on a PC that never crashes or has conflicts. Unfortunately, my years and years of PC gaming were littered with many nights of getting #### to work then actually playing.

Would love to, but unlikely with a baby due by months end. I'll try to get the PC hooked up and updated on the off chance I get a few evenings.

Yes, that is a downside. My skyrim installation includes two or three separate programs used to load mods in the correct order and merge them or whatever. Took time, but wow is it worth it.

Every 18 - 24 months or so, I rebuild my PC so that it is still one of the top rigs out there. I haven't had crashes or conflicts in years but it also takes an investment of time and money that not everyone has available.

I'm in that window now but don't really see much that I can do to upgrade at this point. It's still pretty much top-of-the-line.

I actually think PC gaming has been better the last couple years. My previous PC there were lots of video driver issues where yeah, I'd need to use one driver for one game, then upgrade or downgrade the driver to play another. I've had my current PC about 4 years now, and I don't think I've done anything but an occasional driver upgrade when a new game comes out. So far I don't think I've had to back down to make stuff work. Seems like at least AMD has been doing a better job lately.

Wat? Rabbits, wolves, bears, saber-cats, butterfly, deer, elk, moose, mammoth, fox, skeever, mudcrab, horker, spiders, goats, hawks etc.

The place is teeming with wildlife. How much more do you want?

Either things have changed since you stopped or I am just crazy lucky. I almost never have crashes, glitches or conflicts (even when dealing with mods, which admittedly I don't do that often, Skyrim and Borderlands 2 I went notably heavy with modding on). The biggest problem with PC gaming is having to upgrade your rig every 3-4 years if you want to play the latest games. Fortunately I have such a backlog that I think I will be able to push that out to 5 years or more.

Just let me know. Nothing I understand more than how much kids can take you away from gaming, but you still need gaming to keep your life stress-free. PC gaming is a bit tough with a new baby. Consoles work better in those situations.

I'm AMD also and have the FX-9590 with a well-built machine around it. Everything runs awesome and updates everywhere have been very smooth; no issues whatsoever. AMD has been great for the last 6-8 years for powerful, simple builds.

I've been chugging along the past several weeks playing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I've had it for a long time and I've just never gotten around to playing it. It plays like God of War which isn't too bad, if you're into those type of games. But I really miss old-school Castlevania, or even SotN Castlevania. I have Mirror of Fate lined up next, but since it's technically a sequel to Lords of Shadow, I'm playing it first. But I'm not really that into the God of War type games. Don't get me wrong, it's the best 3D Castlevania I've ever played. But when you're playing a gametype that you don't care for, it turns into a chore. At least Mirror of Fate is supposed to be closer to old-school 2.5D Castlevania, but I think it has similar battle mechanics as LoS. We'll see.

Just continuing to work my way through my backlog. And will probably do so until Battlefront or Fallout 4 come out (whichever comes first).

Bought Fallout 3 and New Vegas in the sale. I'm less than a quarter of the way through Witcher 1 then I'll either run through Batman: Arkham Asylum for a change of pace or just jump right into Fallout 3.

My pregnant wife is asleep on the couch by 9 each night so I can fire up the laptop and play for a couple hours. 5:30 wakeup is tough but sacrifices must be made.

I'm sure get plenty of game time once the little one shows up.

I have three others as well (10,8,2) so play time only happens when all the kids go down for bed. I'm a glutton for punishment.

You've got hours upon hours of fun ahead of you if you can find the time.

Yep Fallout 3 has a better story than New Vegas. With the DLC (esp Brotherhood of Steel) your level is raised to 30 and the game doesn't end with the main storyline.

Fallout 3 is probably the best video game I've played But I'm not a hard core gamer like some of you. Seeing the trailer for 4 made me fire up 3 last night in fact.
