Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Yep Fallout 3 has a better story than New Vegas. With the DLC (esp Brotherhood of Steel) your level is raised to 30 and the game doesn't end with the main storyline.
I disagree on the story portion... I thought the story in Vegas was really good. I liked the atmosphere in 3 better, but most everything else in Vegas other than that was an upgrade.

Better game to play a pure mage, skyrim or dragon age? Something else? I've read that the spells in skyrim are underpowered late in the game.

I have not heard that at all.

Which Dragon Age game? Origins, 2 or Inquisition?

Either way I probably lean towards Skyrim.

If you get the right skill trees and craft the right armor you'll have no problem with any buildout in Skyrim.

Not sure I could find the source again but I recall some comments about the spells damage never increasing as your skill increases which made them underpowered against stronger foes.

And I've yet to play the first Dragon Age so I would start there.

Maybe I'll try both. Went melee on Mass Effect and you don't have that much choice but to do the same in Witcher. Maybe I'll go all-in on Dragon Age and Skyrim. Is one better for going the rogue route?

DA and Skyrim are both totally different types of game play though. DA is more team play orientated meaning you can play as a rogue, mage, tank at the same time. Skyrim is more a single class type.

Skyrim the damage doesn't go up, you just get new spells. And as you increase level a given spell costs less to cast so you can cast more of them.

If you like playing mage, you might want to try some of the user-created magic mods. There are ones that add all new sorts of spells.

Are you sure about that? Seems I recall the spell damage going up as my level in that skill going up. I know you can add perks to reduce the cost of casting a spell, but I think the damage itself increases with skill. I may be wrong because I don't normally play as a full mage - just lighting for the left hand.

I think the thing I like most about Skyrim is the me against the world thing. I like wandering alone killing anything that vexes me or the villagers. I like not having to worry about where did that follower go? Or even worse stepping right in front of my killing blow or shot. Or shooting me. Followers can be the suck except to use as pack mules.

With that said I love me some Dog from FO3. Perfect companion.

Pulling cat6 for my Xbox one. Runs ok on wifi, but noticeable lag on MMOs (been playing neverwinter). Excited to get the Xbox a physical connection.

Perks and such can give you bonuses, but the spells have set effects. Level up enough and you get a new spell that will do more damage. And level up and it costs less to cast a spell of that type. Even things like summon, the duration is constant.

You can see the damage effects and perk impacts at: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Spells#Destruction_Spells

Edit to add: You can't set a level-dependent damage in the normal Creation Kit. Though if someone really wanted it that way, there is a user created set of extensions (Skyrim Script Extender) where if you wanted you could probably create a spell which applies a script you write, and you could have the script calculate damage from your skill level and set it on the target.

Edit again to add: Check out this video of some of the top magic mods. I haven't done much with magic mods, but #9 on their list looks freaking awesome. I love it when some takes something simple like that, making fire spread and letting you extinguish it with ice magic, and runs with it. Making an icewall? Suh-weet!

That's what I was thinking of - some perks decrease cost and some increase damage. "Augmented".

My Diamond Dynasty has stalled out because I've been getting crap for cards. Haven't gotten one good enough to put on the roster for a while now. Upside is that I've built out my customer guy by feeding him crappy cards to the point that he's the best on the team by far. May stop that to try and collect some team cards for the special players.

Mirror's Edge - This one shows up on Steam sales all the time and I have read the reviews a bunch of times so I finally decided to jump in when I saw it for $5 the other day. Despite the fact that this is the first game in I don't know how ling that I had to adjust settings on manually because it froze regularly (almost immediately after I made a post about how I can't remember the last time I had to do that. Well at least now I can remember) this is a very cool game so far. It's worth it for the movement mechanics alone. You're pretty much a parkour master tearing through the city rooftops as you head from objective to objective with trigger happy cops chasing you at every turn forcing you into a lot of blind jumps (which is quite awesome). Story is good enough, I'm only on the second mission so I really can't say but the game mechanics are just top notch. There are a lot of moves and keyboard/mouse commands to pull from but the design and mapping make it pretty intuitive and the learning curve is not as steep as I would have thought with all the variety of moves. Another interesting thing is that there is almost no waypoint system, no minimap or onscreen arrows guiding you along your path, all you get are red highlighted objects that you can interact with which generally guide you along your way but they can be small and hard to see. And if you really get lost they give you an out as you can push the left alt key and it will orient your character in the direction you are supposed to go.

Very cool game so far.
I couldn't stand the game really. Maybe it has a different feel on PC, but on console the game played clunky and it was frustrating beyond belief

Definitely plays better with mouse/keyboard. I hated the way it felt on the Xbox so much I nearly didn't give the PC version a shot. But someone convinced me to try, and I'm glad I did.

I will say that it can be a very unforgiving game. There are some parkour sequences that require rigidly, and frustratingly, precise timing but that makes it all the more rewarding when you nail them. Although there was one sequence that had two complicated moves back-to-back and if you don't nail both you die and have to start over. I may have gone through more restarts on that one sequence than on any sequence of any game I have played in the past 10 years. It was frustrating as heck but I am glad I pushed through and figured it out.

I've been chugging along the past several weeks playing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I've had it for a long time and I've just never gotten around to playing it. It plays like God of War which isn't too bad, if you're into those type of games. But I really miss old-school Castlevania, or even SotN Castlevania. I have Mirror of Fate lined up next, but since it's technically a sequel to Lords of Shadow, I'm playing it first. But I'm not really that into the God of War type games. Don't get me wrong, it's the best 3D Castlevania I've ever played. But when you're playing a gametype that you don't care for, it turns into a chore. At least Mirror of Fate is supposed to be closer to old-school 2.5D Castlevania, but I think it has similar battle mechanics as LoS. We'll see.

Just continuing to work my way through my backlog. And will probably do so until Battlefront or Fallout 4 come out (whichever comes first).
Finished up Lords of Shadow over the weekend. The story was ok. But it did set up the story for Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, which I was more looking forward to. Mirror of Fate is a 2.5D game and while it has the same God of War combat, the platforming and maps are straight out of Symphony of the Night (and the similar Castlevanias). This is more like it!

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but the Steam Summer Sale starts Thursday.
Oh boy. Just updated my wish list.

Does anyone know if Origin has big sales like steam? Been looking to get Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2, neither of which is on Steam.

I’ve been playing the crap out of State of Decay on the 360 since I dl’ed it late Saturday night. Not sure why, but I’m absolutely hooked on this game. It’s like a cross between CoD: Zombies, GTA and a RPG.

Stopping by Gamestop tonight on the way home to pick up my pre-ordered copy of Elder Scrolls Online.

They don't do huge sales like Steam, but those two games are 75% off quite often on Origin.
Battlefield 4 + Dead Space 3 + Mass Effect 3 + Medal of Honor combo pack on sale for $39.99 right now.

Mass Effect Trilogy on sale for $29.99 right now as well.

ETA: For PC

My RF for the Twins got benched about 3 weeks before the All-Star game in favor of a guy with a rating 15 pts below him. I think it's likely because of a couple games where I had an error or two and got picked off on 2nd due to controller issues (Was on first, pick off move came and was thrown over the 1st basemen's head. I pushed up on the stick to advance to 2nd but the ball went out of play and the switch to me being advanced to 2nd was so fast that it took my push as an effort to steal 3rd before the pitch - has happened multiple times. Along with the abrupt change in view when a ball goes over your head in the outfield they may be my two biggest controller gripes in the game). Anyway, the benching cost me my spot on the All-Star team in my rookie year so now I'm requesting trades again. Will be interesting to see if there's a notion of getting a reputation as a bad egg if I manage to get on my 3rd team in just my rookie year while leading the league in average.

Make sure you get the Leviathan DLC and finish it before the end of the game. It has pieces necessary for the overall story to make sense.

I really have to get this. I loved playing this aspect of the game on the 2K baseball game, but the lack of variation left something to be desired. This sounds awesome.

Just get all the DLC. Omega is a fun run'n'gun detour, Leviathan is great for story continuity and Citadel is, quite simply, the best DLC I have ever played (If you have gone through all three games then you will have grown attached to the characters and story-line and Citadel just puts a perfect bow on the whole series).

Just started Walking Dead Season 1. Is there any way to invert the y-axis in this game? It is driving me absolutely crazy and I feel like I am dying in extremely embarrassing fashion.

Get all the DLC. Omega and Citadel are the most enjoyable ones. Leviathan added to the story but was just meh as far as a mission goes. From ashes is also necessary since it has a character that was made for the game.

Agree all the DLC are good.

But I was suggesting Leviathan is a must because of the necessary backstory it provides. Before it came out a lot of people felt the ending was contrived and hated it.

Leviathan fills in the gaps in the story so the ending doesn't seem to come out of left field. It should have been part of the core game, not a DLC.

See I felt Leviathan was their attempt at a rewrite after the fact because it is shoe horned into the overall story. It definitely wasn't their intention.

Possible. I might be giving them too much credit the Leviathan version was the story in their heads and they just did a poor job explaining it enough in the core game.

I had the benefit of not playing it until after the DLC's release. My friends all said it sucked and a DLC was supposed to fix it and to wait until it came out to play out. So for me the ending was fine but I can imagine how it must have looked to everyone who played it before that.

Yes. The extended cut was fine if you never saw the original ending. But there was no way they had the levithan crap in mind with the original.

Maybe we should take this to the Me3 thread but I'm not sure what makes you think it was all made up post hoc.

Just finished Priority: Tuchanka again.

Better than Rannoch IMO. Wrex was my bro.
They both hurt in their own way regardless of the decisions you make.
I lost Mordin and Legion

Didn't really lose him. He ascended. As for Mordin, yea... that one brought tears but proud ones.

Only one that gets me every single ####### time with the tears though is Grunt even if he lives. That scene, ugh. Boss.

Wow, had to google about Wrex. I always was up front with him so never encountered that. That would be a rough one.
