Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (6 Viewers)

I grew up on JRPGs. My first "big boy" game was Final Fantasy 4. I remember thinking how much grander in scope it was than anything else I had played before. I've played through that game dozens of times. It's number one on my list for pure nostalgia reasons.

My top 20ish in no order:

X-Wing series

Aces over Europe

Ultima 7
NFL2K1
Mass effect series
KOTOR
Halo series
Witcher 3
Skyrim
Baldurs Gate 2
Rome Total War
Warcraft 2 (probably #1 overall)

Starcraft
Assassin's Creed 2
Gears of War
Dragon Age
Duke Nukem 3D
Civilization 2
Uncharted 2
goldeneye

Good list. Funny, I was so into PC games from the early/mid 90's, right up until the Xbox 360. Then I moved to that, and have barely touched PC games since.

edit: Warcraft 2 should have made my list

Similar story for me. I always had a console but I was definitely primarily a PC gamer until I got into Halo on the Xbox. At that point the consoles started putting out great shooters and RPGs and I didn't have much need for the PC anymore. I think I bought a new PC in 2003-2004 so I could play Rome Total War, but otherwise I've been almost exclusively playing console games since about 2002.

1. Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) probably logged 2,000 hours playing this. Did and won several 16 person tournaments. So many Mark Carrier INT's.

2. Goldeneye (N64) still the best multiplayer game ever made. Unbelievably addictive for its time. Especially since I was only mediocre at it.

3. Resident Evil 2 (PS1) blew my mind as a 14 year old. If the Leon/Claire parts were less similar, it'd be #1.

4. Silent Hill 2 (PS1) most interesting story I've ever seen in a game. First game where I felt really emotionally effected after playing.

5. LA Noire (PS3) Rockstar's best in my opinion. Love the setting and dialogue. The interrogation parts are especially choice.

6. Tecmo NBA Basketball (NES), probably had close to 500 hours into this one. Bulls were pretty much unbeatable.

7. Heavy Rain (PS3) David Cage games have diminishing returns, but this was a masterpiece to me. Couldn't put it down.

8. The Walking Dead (PS3), if this were a little more action packed, and choices mattered more it may have topped the list. Loved the format, and still do.

9. The Last Of Us (PS3), Great game, but I really disliked the ending. I get why some liked it, but it was enough to keep it down here for me.

10. Life Is Strange (PS3) This game was a revelation, felt connected to several characters, and greatly enjoyed the plot. Lack of action keeps it from top-5.

11. Maniac Mansion (NES) First game I played where I had to solve puzzles. Still holds up to this day.

12. Resident Evil (PS1) Probably would be higher, but I played RE2 first, and preferred it. Really wish RE would have stayed 3rd person.

13. GTA: Vice City (PS2) First game I bought on PS2, had the best voice acting of the GTA series.

14. Resident Evil 4 (PS2) An amazing game, that was really difficult in spots. Wish it hadn't changed the RE series forever though.

15. Bioshock Infinite (PS3) Preferred it to the other Bioshock games, because I thought the story and gameplay was better.

16. Aerobiz (Genesis) Cool little airline simulation. Learned a lot about business and history, while also competing with friends to see who could run a business better.

17. NHL 94' (Genesis) Wraparounds, and monster checks. Ed Belfour was basically a brick wall in the net.

18. WWE No Mercy (N64) Played this in college almost daily. Create a Superstar was amazing, and the many modes and gameplay are still better than today's games.

19. Mario Kart Double Dash (Gamecube) Another college regular. Only Kart game I was ever better than average at.

20. GTA 5 (PS3) A good return to form, after what I thought was a couple lackluster GTA games.

I was born in 1984, so that probably makes my list a bit heavy in 90's games. I also went on a bit of a gaming hiatus from 2005-2011 or so.

I barely played games between the Atari era and when I got my PS2, so my list skews pretty new, but here goes...

In vaguely correct order...

Bioshock (all 3)

Rainbow Six Vegas

Mass Effect 2

Skyrim

Diablo 3

GRAW 1 and 2

Balder's Gate 2

Call of Duty 2

Max Payne

Bad Company 2

Portal 1 and 2

Forza Horizon 2

Rainbow Six Siege

Ratchet and Clank

Jak and Daxter

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Bloodrayne  :bag:  (no idea why I liked this game so much but I did)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Old school honorable mentions: Pitfall (2600), Dr. J vs Larry Bird (C64), Jumpman Jr. (C64)

Considering pulling the trigger on Dragon Age Inquisition. (GOTY Edition is $16)

I'm starving for a RPG but  I'm just tired of fetching quests. I've also noticed a new trend that a lot of newer RPGs play like single player MMOs.

What say my FBG brethren?

That game has a #### ton of fetch quests but you can ignore them and just move through the story if you want.

Do it. DAI was a lot of fun 10000% worth 16.00

Just a reminder that 2 awesome things are happening on October 21st - Black Mirror Season 3 and Civ 6 release.  I know virtually nothing about Civ 6, but will buy it immediately if not sooner.

I wish I could narrow a list down to 20.  A lot depends on my mood at the time and I may not remember certain games that I loved back when I played them. Here's an attempt. The order may just be as I remember this.

1. Mass Effect series

2. Resident Evil Remake

3. Super Mario Bros 3

4. Link to the Past

5. Half Life 2

6. Portal

7. Dark Forces

8. BioShock

9. Resident Evil 4

10. Civ 2

11. Tie Fighter

12. Doom

13. Unreal Tournament

14. Gears of War

15. Legend of Dragoon

16. Tenchu

17. Legend of Zelda

18. System Shock 2

19. Fallout 3

20. Team Fortress 2

I'm sure there's some i missed. Like Castlevania, Metroid, oh Mega Man 2. There's lots.

Just Missed: Skyrim, Nhl 94, fallout new Vegas, techno Bowl
Didn't have time to add commentary earlier to some select choices of my list. Most of my top list is based on nostalgia.

20. Quarantine - not a very well known game. You're a taxi driver in a city that has been quarantined due to a zombie outbreak. It's open world driving and it's a predecessor to the GTA games. It also had a killer punk rock soundtrack.  I played this on a 3DO.

19. Half Life 2

18. Red Dead Redemption - one of the best moments in gaming is when you first get to Mexico on your horse and Far Away starts playing. Just a brilliant moment.

17. Earthbound - the quirky fun, modern day JRPG. Had an amazing story and a great soundtrack. There is no other game like it.

16. Legend of Zelda - the first video game I ever owned.

15. Final Fantasy 7 - the first game I ever pre-ordered. Probably the game I had the most anticipation for. It did not disappoint.

14. Mike Tyson's Punchout - would play this for hours on end with friends. We used to give each other nicknames based on the characters. I was Soda Popinski.

13. Doom 2 - this was my first Doom experience which is why it's my favorite. I also spent a lot of time making custom wads which was super fun.

12. Chrono Trigger

11. Super Metroid - spent my first paycheck ever on this gem.

10. Super Mario World

9. World of Warcraft - altogether this game probably sucked 3-4 years of my free time. How does it not belong here.

8. Street Fighter 2 - freshman year of high school was all about going to the 7-11 after school to play this all afternoon. Was great fun. Probably should have spent more time ####### girls instead but whatever. No one could beat my Blanca.

7. Final Fantasy 6

6. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas -  I was blown away at the time at how big the game world was. Epic game.

5. Medal of Honor Allied Assault - my favorite FPS of all time. I put countless hours into online play here.

4. Castlevania SOTN - I think I have played through and beaten this game more times than any other. The game that has an entire genre named after it.

3. Zelda: A Link to the Past

2. Ultima Online - I don't think I'll ever be able to recreate the thrill of first going online mining a bunch of gold and then losing it all to a pk. Used to have to wait until after 9 or so to play because it would tie up the phone line.

1. Final Fantasy 4 - mentioned this above. The first game I ever played that had a complex plot and great characters. This is a pure nostalgic pick.

XCom Jesus how could I forget XCom UFO Defense 1994. I spent literal days without sleep playing that game. I think my longest session was 22 straight hours playing.

And Metal Gear Solid for Ps1. Another masterpiece. Just too many games.

No. It seems I'm in a pattern of buying Madden then go on a boycott of EA sports. Until the new Madden comes out and the cycle starts again.
Ok. I have 16 and played it a ton

Any XB1 guys interested in a online madden league? Draft from scratch, play games 2-3 times a week. Just looking for a couple of guys here, not a full ***official FBG league. Too many people and it fizzles out.

We play fairly sim,

4&3 or more = punt, unless you're down by 17 or more, or it's the 4th quarter.

10 years ago I'd be all over this. Now I barely have time to play what's on my plate as is.

Picked up NBA2K17 over the weekend and got a few games in with the kids.  Graphics continue to improve.  I'm not sure I am a fan of the new shooting meters, but I think that is my reaction every time it changes, but I'll get used to it eventually I'm sure.

The game designers apparently are high on Thon Maker's future, as he is utterly unstoppable.

i got my ps4 copy of xcom 2. Should i save it to play on Extra Life day? I don't know if I can just ignore that little cellophane package for that long.

I am also playing Dragon Quest Heroes and got Doom on the cheap.

I would lower your expectations. It's a smaller team with big aspersions. It's being built up, at least in my eyes, as a game that will be an influence on the future of games. It is the ultimate sandbox. Go anywhere, do anything, etc and all in a shared universe with other players.

Maybe I'm too jaded from the false promises of almost every game but I imagine there will be many things that come up short. It will be too difficult to be the first to discover things. Pirates/trolls will be everywhere. There will be bugs that throw off the balance of the game. Progression will be too slow. Basically, maintaining balance in the game seems impossible. And this is assuming they nail the technical side and the general enjoyment of the game.
you were right. i don't hate it, but it's only good in short bursts. like zits.

XCOM2 is a fantastic and difficult game.  I would jump into it as soon as you can.

No Man's Sky under investigation by the ASA.

:lmao:

After the active player count for No Man's Sky dropped below 1,000 players on Steam, it's safe to say that the highly anticipated game had a rather rough release. It appears as though things are getting worse for No Man's Sky, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is investigating the game after receiving "several complaints."

After No Man's Sky released in August for the PlayStation 4 and PC, there were claims  from fans of false advertisement perpetuated by the game's creator Sean Murray. False advertisement wasn't the only complaint, there were also bugs that caused quite a few players either refunding the game or simply quit playing.

Even Sony's President believes that No Man's Sky was overpromised by its creator. Throughout all of this, the No Man's Sky developers have been silent - they have yet to comment on claims.

While no details on the ASA's investigation into have been revealed, one No Man's Sky player has detailed the ASA's response to their complaint.

According to Redditor AzzerUK, both the No Man's Sky developer, Hello Games, and Valve have a joint responsibility and are both being investigated. What is being investigated? Apparently, the following are the most complained about features:

Videos:

  • User interface design
  • Ship flying behaviour (information; with a ‘wingman’; flying close to the ground)
  • Behaviour of animals (in herds; destroying scenery; in water; reacting to surroundings)
  • Large-scale space combat
  • Structures and buildings as pictured
  • Flowing water
  • Speed of galaxy warp/loading time
  • Aiming systems

Screenshots:

  • Size of creatures (9)
  • Behaviour of ships and sentinels (4, 5 and 8)
  • Structures and buildings as pictured (3)

Store Page in general:

  • Quality of graphics
  • References to: lack of loading screens, trade convoys between stars, factions vying over territory

Hello Games and Steam must respond to the ASA, but when they will has not been detailed. If the ASA finds Hello Games and Valve guilty of false advertisement, the items in questions (videos, screenshots etc) will be removed, penalties might even be issued.
This is something that should have happened a long time ago. Not to NMS but to the entire video Industry. Every game spends years getting its tires pumped and "demos" put out at PAX, E3, etc. And it seems like every game gives a false impression or complete lies about what it is. I do understand that they are still making the game but then don't make these claims.

At the same time a huge portion of games get delayed and pushed back. Don't even advertise games until the game is made. Then spend 3-6 to months fixing bugs and doing QA while running the marketing cycle.

I actually feel bad for the devs of NMS. They are a small basically Indy company and made a small Indy game. It was Sony that really blew them up and gave them so much stage time and hype. Was the Murray guy at fault, yeah a bit but he's also the person making the game. He has big expectations and plans. I'm guessing he doesn't have a degree in marketing.

Fk that.  Dude was making the rounds telling blatant lies about the game.  It's obvious (in hindsight) based on his body language that he was knowingly not telling the truth when answering direct questions about the game (ie, will there be multiplayer), that's not Sony's fault

I love it when trailers boat "This was used with entire in-game footage"....yeah, when the game is being run on a supercomputer.

Sony's magazine adds back when I read them were pretty egregious too.

So, most know I'm primarily a PC gamer, but after waiting it out, I finally broke down and bought an Xbox One.  Some of you may have me friended already from the Xbox 360, but you all are welcome to do so if you haven't.  Gamertag is still TravJam (unless I find SlaX available, which I'll post if I change it).

Anyone know how this is going to be handled? Will any mod available on steam port over to xbone?
It probably wont be that simple.   I'm pretty sure most mods will have to be updated to support the new version of the game.  So any mods whose authors have gone AWOL may not get updated.  The mod community in general is also FILLED with drama so expect some of that to carry over too preventing us from having nice things.

It's the full game / ea has early access to it I think 7-10 days before actual release.

Been playing Madden Franchise mode, really digging it.
How far into it are you (i.e. how many seasons, how is the offseason, how is player development, etc...)?  Franchise is really the only part I play in Madden so the quality of this year's franchise mode is the driving factor on whether or not I buy it.  I would love to hear feedback about it.

For now it's still the same - Edit: looks like it will remain that way, 'SlaX' is taken.  Boy, installing games takes a long time.  Got Rare Replay and it's been installing for over an hour.

I'm near the end of season 3. All of franchise has been revamped. This is the first edition I've played in several years so I don't have much to compare.

Draft scouting is different and combine results are added in the off-season. Plus draft stories are in the news each week.

Player progression was revamped also. I like it so far.

Game play is good for me. Running is a bit hard and deep passing is a bit easy. Sliders from OS help even it out.

HTH

Interesting, thanks.  I liked the franchise mode for the most part for both '15 and '16 on PS3, but both have player development problems.  In '15 I found that players developed too quickly, but they overcompensated for '16 where players barely developed at all.  I was hoping they had fixed that for '17, plus being on PS4 it should be better than PS3 anyway.
